A Cure For Cancer?
Holy cow! This is potentially very huge. Of course, since the drug is not under patent it does not appear like the drug companies are interested in funding clinical trials and this may need to be funded publicly instead. Who cares. Pull some money out of "defense" budgets and throw it towards some trials. We'll be saving allot of pain and suffering in both patients and war zones. And now for the science: Article from the New Scientist Magazine Wikipedia article Article in the Toronto Star Nothing ......

Online Family Tree
A shout out to Omar who pointed me to this excellent family tree site at It's fairly fast, free and online, so everyone in the family tree can contribute and build out the branches. Check it out if you're into family trees at all. Note: If you're somehow related to me, expect some mail to come your way shortly once I extend the branches a bit. Or else drop me note and we'll set things up ......

Windows Home Server
I was pleasantly surprised to hear about the Windows Home Server today On10 and on Charlie Kindel's blog as well. This is a great idea, an easy way to unify and administer all the resources of a multi PC home. The ease of backup, storage "cloud" and access over the net will be the big selling points (for me at least). So it looks like Rick Hallihan was on to something when he wrote about a "Windows Home Server" back in 2005. It's also interesting to look at Charlie's post at that time. Was Charlie ......

Windows Defender Service Failing
For the past few days we've been getting the following error on our machines at home: Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually. A quick search lead me to this post by Paul Wu regarding the Windows Defender error. It turns out that Windows Defender is out of Beta and a new version is available. Simply follow the instructions on Paul's post ......

O Valencia!

I don't usually listen to one song numerous times a day, and rarely buy a CD based on the strength of one track, but... Well, this says it all...

Currently listening to: O Valencia! - (03:48)

Tea Consumption and Iron Absorption
I was recently looking for information concerning Tea (which I drink alot of) and Iron absorption. My concern is probably the opposite of most people's (especially women); my body loves iron, a bit too much and so I have to be careful about my intake. Most anaemics have the opposite problem, they can't get enough of the stuff. Anyway, I found an interesting article from the UK Tea Council on exactly this subject. Tea and Iron Absorption (doc file). Basically, it comes down to this quote: Tea drinking ......

Shades Of The Big O(we)
In the ongoing effort to beef up Vancouver's image as a world class Olympic city it seems like the BC Place Stadium has taken a page out of the book of Montreal's Olympic Stadium and collapsed part of it's roof. Yup, I guess that all the recent wind, rain and snow have taken their toll on the roof and a 40 foot long hole has opened up. From the Vancouver Sun's coverage: The roof is held up by air pressure, so even a tiny tear in the fabric could cause the roof to collapse. ... There are two layers ......

Stormtroopers On Parade
In case you missed it, George Lucas was the honorary Grand Marshal of this year's Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena. The parade included 200 stormtroopers from all over the world. More info here and pictures of the troops in training here. A good video of the event is below. Blogging has been very slow as of late due to a totally busy December and lots of other things on my plate. I've got some more stuff coming along soon ......
