Technically Speaking All in on IT
vista 5600Here's a screenshot of Windows Vista rc1 running on my Dell D620. Everything is working very well despite a few bugs. IE7 continues to give me some minor fits I cannot explain: 1. I cannot change my homepage and make it stick. 2. I cannot add URL's to the trusted sites zone or the intranet zone. On other fronts: 1. I have to launch the sidebar manually - although some think this is a good thing. 2. Expanding my monitor still is with its problems  - the behavior isn't consistent. On the up side: 1. Performance is still very fast. Much faster than the previous versions. 2. The more I get used to the interface, I find I am doing every day tasks quicker than I did in Windows XP. 3. More and more apps are beginning to run smoothly on Vista. However, RSS Bandit wont even install which is a huge bummer. With or without Glass enabled. And Dell needs to get on the ball and release some beta drivers already! Please? Boot up is still taking a bit longer (+ 60 seconds) than I would like as well. I think this is related to booting at work only and having to sit through the GPO's getting pushed down. At home it boots up much quicker (under 30 seconds). Also interesting to see is Chris Pirillo's post and Charlie's challenge to Vista's Aero Glass ... check out the video. Posted on Monday, September 11, 2006 1:27 PM Vista | Back to top

What driver did you use to get the full aero theme? My install of RC1 on the D620 doesn't seem to have the Lakeport driver anymore.

Aero is not a theme. To use Aero your theme setting must be set to "Windows Vista" and your appearance settings must be set to "Windows Aero". If you do not have the option of Windows Aero, then the video card you are using does not meet the minimum requirements of the Aero software, because Aero is included in RC1. Here is just a quick list of some graphics requirements.

DirectX 9 Capable (WDDM Driver Support recommended)

DirectX 9-class GPU that supports:
A WDDM Driver

Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware

32 bits per pixel (must use this color setting)

Adequate graphics memory3

GPU Manufacturer Information

Graphics Memory minimum 128 MB
