Use your Motorola Q as a broadband modem

MotorolaQ

Surf at broadband speeds as you tether your Q.

I found the following info where someone figured out how to use your Motorola Q as a broadband modem! Now before everyone jumps at me a little disclaimer, "If you should decide on using this workaround you are breaking your terms and conditions of your contract with Verizon Wireless and could be dropped". Ok now that’s out of the way here is how it is done.

The reason I won’t to figure this out was financially motivate. I would love tethering via USB without dishing out $35 for PDANet.

To setup the Q:

1.       Dial ##342587

                      MotorolaQ

2.       Enable Dial-Up Networking

                      MotorolaQ

3.       Go to Start, Accessories, Modem Link

                     Pc_capture4

4.       Make sure that "USB" is selected under "Connection"

5.       Select "Activate"

6.       Download the driver Here.

SNAG-20060107-1806-04

SNAG-20060107-1806-14

7.       Plug in the Q.

8.       When the New Hardware Dialogue appears, select "Install from a specific location" and point to the folder you have stored the driver.

9.       Clicking "Next" a few times will complete the installation.

SNAG-20060107-1753-36

To prevent the phone from locking up, you have to do these steps in this order.

1.       When you go into the "Modem Link" program, you will select Activate and then Done. The Q will return to the home screen.

2.       Plug in your USB cable.

3.       Tether.

4.       When done, disconnect the DUN connection on the computer side and wait for it to be clearly gone.

5.       Reopen the Modem Link program and select "Deactivate".

6.       The hourglass thingy will appear. Once the status reads "Inactive" select done.

7.       The Modem Link program will exit and now the Q will function in Activesync mode again as normal.

8.       Enjoy

After you have installed the modem driver –

9.       Open internet explorer and select tools/internet options.

10.    Click the connections tab

11.    Under Dial-up and VPN settings click "add"

12.    Select Dial-up to private network click next

13.    Select only the Motorola q USB modem, click next.

14.    Verizon users enter #777 for the phone number(other carriers use your internet access code)click next.

15.    Enter Q USB modem for the name and click finish.

16.    Verizon users enter "vzw" in the password field; leave the user name and domain blank. Click OK.

17.    Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present then click ok.

If your phone is activated as in steps 3-5 above, your internet connection should work!

If this is not working for you, try out PDANet for $35. You can download it at http://www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/index.php.

Here’s what it looks like running:

       SNAG-20060107-1740-09

     SNAG-20060107-1740-47

    SNAG-20060107-1742-41

I was able to run XMRadio Online without a skip using only the PdaNet Modem. So the Verizon network is pretty fast. Nice… XMRadio tune while you code at the beach!

They have a 7-day trial with the Bluetooth support version. Great stuff, either way. I’ve used both and $35 is worth it to me to save the time switching back and forth between ActiveSync and DUN.

Enjoy,

Murray

Hey! Works great, thanks....
Two questions:
Is there any need to dial ##342587 afterward each use to disable dial-up networking?
Is 961kbps the maximum rate under windows xp for a dial-up modem?

I have found you need to dial ##342587 to disable dial-up networking.

I'm not sure if 961kbps is the max under windows xp. I would need to do a little more research before I could say for sure. I will post if I find out otherwise. But for now I would just assume that 961 is the max.

Thanks for the feedback.

I do not see the Modem Link under Accessories. It just isn't there. Did Verizon cut me off or disable it. Do I have to buy PDANet?

The modem link only shows up after you Dial ##342587 then enable dialup networking. Otherwise it doesn't show up by default.

This is an override to show the Modem Link that Verizon tried to hide on you.

Hope that helps.

Hey, I got this to work, but I was unable to get a connection speed other than 116.53 kbps when im connected. I've disconnected and reconnected a few times but still cant get anything different than that. How do I get the 961 kbps that I should be able to get.

The default modem speed is 115k, to get 961k per second you must go back into your Network connections where you set this up, right click on the network connection you just created, click configure, and set max speed to 921,600.

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to juice it up over 921,600 as I'm getting close to a full megabit per second download speeds already!

I was even able to play World of Warcraft with only 234ms latency! Amazing!

Tony, sorry you are having problems. If you walk through the steps I outlined on a Verizon Motorola Q, you should have a working modem. Sorry it's not working for you. You can always buy PdaNET.

For some reason when I get to the "install modem" step on my PC, no ports show up to select (Com 1, Com 4, etc.). Does anyone else have this problem? How do I make the port list visible here so that I can select one?

Ok, I'm a little confused. First, without doing ANYTHING I DO have modem link in my accessories. Not sure if I should have it, but I do.

Second, on steps 4, 5, 6 at the beginning -- are we doing this on the Q or on the laptop? Seems like you are saying to download the driver to the computer, not the Q.

Step 5 is "activate" - I can do that, seemingly, out of the box since it is on my Q.

Basically, I'm unclear as to which of the steps apply to the Q and which steps apply to the laptop.

# re: Use your Motorola Q as a broadband modem (Tethered DUN)

Q1 - That's awesome you have a modem link. I didn't have one when I received it from Verizon the first week they hit the market.

Q2 - the driver would be installed on the computer. Your pc needs to know how to use the Motorola Q as a dialup modem.

Q3 - Awesome you can 'activate'. Mine didn't work out of the box.

Q4 - Step 5 is the last step you perform on the Motorola Q. The rest is the PC.

Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks,
Murray

I am considering buying a motorola Q at the first of the year with verizon, but I've heard that verizon has somehow kept you from using this process with a new hardware update. Is this true? Will I have to pay an extra 15 bucks a month to use my laptop through my Q?

Andy, that might be the case. The Q I'm using at the moment works great. I purchased it right when Verizon released the product. Not sure what the new versions phone will have enabled or disabled. I rarely use the feature. Mainly when I'm in the airport, a hotel or in transit. I hope for your case the hardware update won't affect you.

Best,

I was lucky enough to have the Modem Link already in accessories so I followed the instructions from there with complete success except for connecting to Verizon's network. I'm using the #777 as the phone number, however, it says that vzw is not a valid password for the current domain. My first thought is that the domain isn't going over blank, thing is I don't have an form field for domain to leave blank. I have no idea what domain its using. There is an option to use windows' authentication info (username, password, and domain) but I don't have that selected. Has the password changed or do you think my domain setting is wrong? If its wrong how would I change that?

pdaNet 1.80 works great with my Q (WinXP on my laptop). I just tested the trial version and was getting 2.4Mbps. I will try the above method though, to avoid paying the $35. Thanks for all the info.

Question: is it possible to create a "macro" on the Q to dial the ##342587 and enable DUN?

You might need to check with Verizon on this one. I use my moto Q as a modem mostly when I travel. I typically use it in the airport to avoid the absurd fees they charge to use their wifi. Sometimes I use it at client sites or presentations when the facility either doesn't allow or doesn't have wifi access.

I have full data service with my Verizon account. I don't know whether you have to pay $15 extra for the modem link. Let me know if you find out.

Thanks,
Murray

If you read the terms and conditions from Verizon, they say that you are in breach of contract if you tether your phone without subscribing to their "Access Broadband Connect" service. All they do if you subscribe is send you their version of pdanet.

The catch is they say that the way they determine whether or not you are in breach of contract whether you are subscribed to their service or not is if you use more than 5GB of traffic in a month at which point they will shut you down. However, even if you are subscribed to their service they will still shut you down if you use more than 5GB per month.

So at the end of the day it looks like you can use the manual work around, pdanet, or subscribe to Verizon's service and just don't use more than 5GB.

Looking for a way to keep my system up to date while on the road. Looking at verizon but notice one key important factor for me "don't use more than 5GB."

So, I guess Verizon does not want you to keep your Windows XP or Vista update on security or your virus definition update to date. I constantly online and I more likely to go over 5GB especially when needing to keep my system up to date on security. So I guess Security is not top priority for Verizon nor is unlimited access on Motorola Q.

I just stumbled on this page today.. im going to try this out as soon as i get home from work.

FYI - For those of you dialing ##342587 and having problems its because the newer Q's already have the Modem Link program visible.. start/accessories/modem link

i'll post my results.

FYI 2 - i've been reading alot about this today and apparently some users will have to use your_mobile_number@vzw3g.com as your user name and vzw as the password
