Planning ahead ... if only
My big plan to add some cool features to our Imagine Cup entry using MapPoint was foiled tonight. Unfortunately, you cannot get a test account from Mappoint immediatly. Instead, you have to wait up to 2 business days for your account information. So I guess I will have to find some time down the road to add those features. For now a couple custom controls for the win forms app will have to do. Today I discovered there is a free hotspot (wireless internet access) at the starbucks in the mall near ......

Sink or Swim
My MS experience so far has been very positive. No other internship/coop position has forced me to use some much of the skills I have learned in school and then some. I can't really detail my project however, I have had to learn everything from low level miniport drivers to APIs and everything in between. So far I have had my head in a book at every space moment and I still have a ton to learn. Some of the stuff I'm doing is at a lower level than I like, but it is still valuable to know so all in ......

Which OS are you?

Apparently this is me....

You are Slackware Linux. You are the brightest among your peers, but are often mistaken as insane. Your elegant solutions to problems often take a little longer, but require much less effort to complete.

A quick note to say that Elisa has posted the pics from the mariners game on my picture gallery.  Check it out:

The worst feeling ever.
My internet was down all weekend. That is the worst feeling ever - I found out how much I rely on it. Anyways enough with my crying. This weekend Elisa came to visit and we had a jam packed weekend of shopping, sightseeing and baseball watching. We went to the Mariners game on Sunday and got the sweetest seats ever - between third and home about 9 rows off the field. You could literally smell the grass :). I will post all the pictures we took as soon as I have a minute to do so. Anyways I'm off to ......

Do IE HTTP uploads slow you down?
Do you find HTTP uploads to be terribly slow in IE? If so try this hack: 1) find this spot in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\... \CurrentVersion\Internet Settings 2) Add the following: Value name: SocketSendBufferLengthData type: REG_DWORDRadix: DecimalValue data: Buffer size that you want (in bytes) Buffer size value options: 16-KB Buffer = 1638424-KB Buffer = 2457632-KB Buffer = 3276840-KB Buffer = 4096048-KB Buffer = 4915256-KB Buffer = 5734464-KB Buffer = 65536 Caution:You ......

New toy
As a perk from my last job with MS Canada I received a pocket pc yesterday. To be specific it is a Ipaq hp pocket pc h1935. I have yet to have time to really play with it but I'm sure I will enjoy it. Now all I have to do is jazz up the mobile part of my imagine cup entry to take advatage of the richer UI supported by the pocket pc! This next bit really has nothing to do with technology, but I thought I would share it anyways. Since I am going to Brazil for Imagine cup I have been reading up on it. ......

Good and Bad News
Today I spent forever trying to get my automated stress testing setup at work. I tried everything from cable swapping to reinstallations and nothing worked. Finally I was forced to call it quits and send an email to the team that supports the testing. This also caused me to stay until about 7:30 when I was planning to be out by about 6. Oh well, thats life. Enough with the bad news, onto the good. This morning I was greeted with a wonderful email that informed me I had won a XBOX. Yes thats right, ......

We should live life in a Jacuzzi
I have now officially become addicted to the Jacuzzi at the Pro Club in Redmond. I mean what is better than an ice water while watching TV in a Jacuzzi after a workout? Thats right, there is nothing better. Anyways onto the technical side of my blog.... Today I learnt about an awesome new technology that is coming to the networking world - TCP Offload Engine (TOE). This technology will allow much of the handling of TCP packets to be done in hardware instead of software. Currently only small operations ......

Let the rant continue
Ok here is the deal - I am now going to end each of my posts with a funny quote found in the networking documentation of MacOSx, Linux and Windows. Ok so here we go..... After clicking a link on an open source project used in MacOSx to provide IPV6 support I was forwarded to a page that said ... “Nothing for you to see here. Please move along. “ All I can say right now is “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH... ......

The lack of good networking documentation
I have a feeling this post is going to turn into more of a rant than anything. Today I went searching for some documentation regarding the TCP/IP stack capabilities of the MacOS and that of Linux. I could not find a piece of decent documentation to save my life. All I could find was either high level marketing crap or whitepapers telling me how I could add custom networking extensions to the exisiting network infrastructure of the various OSs I researched. How on earth do you know if you need to ......

TCP, Linux, and Mac ...Oh my
Ok so work is starting to really ramp up now and eat all my time. I am in need of a list of information regarding the networking implementation (TCP/IP stack, network API interfaces, etc) and capabilities of the latest redhat and suse linux distributions as well as that for Mac OSx-Panther. If anyone knows of some awesome documentation sources for low level stuff for either Mac OSx of Linux send the links my way. Anyways enough with the networking stuff. Today after work I went exploring to downtown ......

Picture me Bloggin'
Ok so day two saw me get yet another new computer. This time it is so new it is a demo from NVidia with hardware that has not even been released yet :). My manager took me around and showed me the ropes of the office building and then we went for lunch at a sweet local mexican place and I had the best burrito of my life. I will definately be a regualar at that joint as it has reasonable prices and is a 5 minute drive from campus. I signed up for a gym pass today as well. I'd have to say from the ......

The first day
I had my first day of work today. To be quite honest I did absolutely nothing. The day started with orientation until about 1pm. I then proceded onto the building I will be working in (building 40 - big, new and cool) and met my manager and mentor. However, both my manager and mentor had meetings all day so I setup my computer and got onto the domain and all the jazz and then headed home. Hopefully tomorrow I will learn what it is I will be doing. I am a Program Manager on the Transports and Connectivity ......

No Rest - Onto Redmond
After returning home from Toronto I left the next day for Redmond where I will be doing a summer internship with the Transports and Connectivity team at Microsoft. So far so good - I have managed to get through customs, get my rental car, drive to my apartment, and get an internet is good! For all my car buff friends, I am the proud renter of a 2003 chevy malibu with power everything. Enough about the wheels, lets talk location. I am accross the street from Microsoft. I hope the ......

Last day at VSLive - back to Victoria we go
Today we have done nothing but sleep and come to the conference centre to check our email. All I can say was last night was awesome!!!!! I tell you Object Sharp sure knows how to host a pub crawl. I am too tired and hungry to blog on that right now, but tommorow I will post all the details of our advertures (with pictures). I would have to say I really enjoyed our first day at VSLive with all the media hype, however, yesterday was by far the funnest of them all. Have I hyped up our day enough without ......

Bags are packed - will the Ferry workers let us go?
My team and I are set to leave for Vancouver where we will catch our flight to Toronto. However, due to a stupid amount of “public protests” the ferry boat was not running this morning. It is currently 11:43 and now the boats are going again - but for how long? If all goes well we will get there and have a great time. I'm not exactly sure what our schedule is right now .......all I know is the hotel and VSLive look like they will ROCK! Actually I forgot I do know a bit about the schedule: ......

Going to Toronto
As part of our Imagine Cup win we will be heading to Toronto for 4 days to accept our award. We will be receiving our award from a Microsoft Canada executive during his Keynote at VSLive! We also get to attend VSLive for free :). To see all the presentations at you can check out the VSLive website: . Right now I am trying to put together a list of upgrades to our app for the worlds. I am hoping to get a ton of feedback while in Toronto. Well, thats about all for today.....I'm ......
