External Storing of Binary Large Objects (BLOBs) in MOSS
An update to my previous post on storing SQL BLOBs in SharePoint. Since MOSS SP1 it seems that you can do this in a supported way by implementing the ISPExternalBinaryProvider COM Interface. Using SharePoint to search SQL BLOB Data

SharePoint can already search Office file formats stored in the database, this article can be used as a starting point for developing a separate database that hosts binary data readable by SharePoint.
