Sometimes you just gotta laugh
First of all, I've been in a pretty pissy mood all day. I have no clue why, I just have. Luckily, what I am about to bring to your attention made me laugh. I think by this point, a lot of people realize that there are a surprisingly high number of book reviews at Amazon that are absolutely atrocious. I don't mean reviews giving a book one star. I am talking about reviews that don't actually review anything about the book. A good example of one I saw today (although not the one I was referring to ......

WTF?!? Okay, I'm as obese as the next guy, but even us rotund people can have pet-peeves. What has the world come to? In my personal opinion, this is 10% diet, 90% fad. It bothers me when every major company out there is jumping on the bandwagon, especially with a “food discovery” that is going to be out-of-date and so-wrong-the-next-week-that... Anyways, I could keep going, but I won't because I am extremely out ......

Game Development Series
Since I've gotten a couple emails about the status of my game development series, I thought I would post an update here. My current plan is to await the summer release of the MDX SDK. There are some really cool improvements in the release that will make the articles much easier to understand and make DirectX more accessible to us game praogramming newbies. This time off will also allow me to finish off some other articles that I have on my plate. I will keep you all posted when the status of this ......

UML 2 Stencils for Visio
This download was brought to my attention by Scott. For anyone familiar with UML 2 and disliking working with Visio because of the lack of up-to-date UML stencils, you can download the UML 2 stencils over here. Enjoy! I know I will :D.

Presenting Data and Information
First of all, thanks for the link Scott!! Well, I'm now registered to attend the course “Presenting Data and Information” by Edward Tufte. This course is *highly* recommended by many software engineers that I know. If you would like to attend yourself, you can find information at I'm just hoping that I indeed did get my registration in on time. Even with the online registration, they “snail-mail” the confirmation to you. I'm hoping ......

What a mind blower!
Check it out. Sometimes it doesn't work because he's fixing his database. But it is still crazy.

Alas, my poor friend. I knew him well (and no, this isn't about President Reagan)
You know, I had no clue that the sun started this horrible habit of getting up so early in the morning. Last time I checked with my friend, he was sleeping in until 8 or 9 in the morning like I do. Obviously the coming spring must have thrown off his internal clock. My wife and I were up at around 2 or 3 (I can't remember, it was way too early to think about a stupid little thing like “what time is it?”) because our little poochie was having some problems. Jazz (our little poochie, not ......

MDX 9.0 Summer '04 Update
Man!!! This is exactly what I suppose I get for going on such a blogging hiatus. I come back and I can't stop discovering kick butt stuff that is coming out, has been out and I didn't know about, or that I simply forgot about. When catching up on the various blogs I am subscribed I came across an announcement in David Weller's blog about the coming summer update for Managed DirectX 9.0. Check out David's blog post for the best sneak speak. However, there are some things that I want to highlight here ......

I love correspondence chess!
For all the casual chess players out there, you should really try correspondence chess. It rocks!!!! It's much more casual and it's not nearly as time-consuming as OTB play. I already have a banner for GameKnot on the left that you can see. I found a new site (thanks Tryfon!!!!) that seems to have a lot more members and functionality. The site is and full membership is only $19/year which is next to nothing. Please use me as a referrer if you decide to join (my nickname is JasonOlson ......

The Visual Feeling of Jazz
If I could sum up my feeling of Jazz visually, it would have to be with the following posters.... Cool, Smoky, yet Intellectual. Birth of the Cool, Man! Yeah, Baby! Now that's what I call photography ......

Please Welcome Mr. Ward Cunningham
And the stuff I missed doesn't stop with Halo 2. Over at Channel 9 are a bunch of videos with Mr. Wiki himself, Ward Cunningham. It's truly great to hear ideas on these subjects from people like Ward. I feel that anyone *remotely* interested in programming should mosey on over and check those videos out. Here are a couple of links to them: Ward Cunningham On... Teaching Kids About The World of Programming Programming Languages The Paradigm Shift Coming for Developers The Coming Communication Revolution ......

Halo 2
Well, evidently while I was taking a blogging/development vacation, there was a lot of stuff that I happened to miss. This the first one: more videos of Halo 2 from E3 2004. To say that I am *highly* anticipating the arrival of this game would be a *great* understatement. While I can't think of a clever quip of just how excited I am, I'm sure that many of you astute readers out there can conjure one up really quickly. You can find the videos over at Team XBox: ......
