Today I delivered a session on the ADO.NET Entity Framework as part of a “Battle of the ORMs” session at the Developer Group in Reading, UK. Wasn’t really a battle, more a friendly get together over cake :-)

Thanks to all those who attended and to the the other presenters – I learnt a lot!

The main links I wanted to share are:

FYI – the sessions were:

ORM Framework -  Andrew Cutforth
Entity Framework – Eric Nelson (Microsoft)
The Framework with No Name (yet!) (60 mins) – Joanna Carter
XPO from DevExpress – Gary Short (DevExpress)
ECO – Scott Price

Thanks very much for your talk! you told us just what we need to know and made EF seem a lot less scary.
Can I ask a numpty question?
I want to let my users choose fields from a fieldlist for reporting purposes. In the old days I could build up a sql statement, throw it at the db connection and get back a datatable which i could put into a grid. Can I do this now? Dynamic Linq? Dynamic properties in Javascript?

Dynamic creation of queries is handled very nicely with Entity Framework. You can either simply create ESQL at runtime (create a string!) or you can use Query Builder. Take a look at http://www.thedatafarm.com/blog/2008/08/05/QueryingWithLINQToEntitiesVsObjectQueryInEF.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896238.aspx
