Cool Sites

Web Logging (or 'blogging') is a masturbatory inbred-hit-counting stroke-off.  And the people that disagree with this are insane.

At least, that's what I used to think.  I was at the MVP Summit a while back talking with fellow MVP Bruce Johnson about blogging and he told me that he uses his blog as a place to record things that he didn't want to forget.  Like something that took you ages to debug or figure out and you wanted to record the process so you could refer back to it.  Keep it all in one place that you could get to from anywhere you had the Internet.

I took this to heart and started this blog to do precisely that.  (and bitch a little too...who could resist?)  Never really thinking that anyone is going to read my ravings, I go happily along.  Today I took a look at the hits on my various postings.  Seems that in addition to helping myself, I am also helping others.

Check this out:

That's really cool!  Just when you thought nobody was listening...

Now, about this over-hyped GMail phenomenon and the psychophantic behaviour of people out there looking for an invite...

IT'S ONLY EMAIL for heaven's sake!!

Maybe a livejournal would be better for this kind of usage though - as I think blogs are meant to be 'public domain' - whereas a 'journal' can be private - a slight shift of emphasis?

Additionally, you might not want your hard-earned insight to 'leak' as it were (depends on its value I guess)

I 'keep' an LJ for non-techie thoughts - that I don't mind others reading, but also make private entries in it sometimes when I want to record more personal notes to myself.

Anyway, it obviously IS a possible use.

P.S. Anyone know how, when I reply on geekswith...., to 'link' peetm with my blog here? It's too technical for me!

Oh, and on GMail - invites seem to be very easily obtained on http://www.emailaddresses.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=30

peetm:
When you make a comment, put the URL of your blog into the Url: box. It will link it automagically. :)

On the subject of Live Journal, that's a neat idea but I don't mind this hard won knowledge being public. Sharing with the community is all part of being a Microsoft MVP.

cheers,
dave

I too don't mind much of what I've gleaned going public - however, there are occasions where I want to leave a note to myself, but can't make the details public - NDA stuff etc.

Thanks for the URL tip - I guess I'll see if it works when I 'Submit'!

Blogging is different things to different people. I'd link to one of my posts on the subject, but that would be... masturbatory ;-)
