Discussion Post: Vista is the new Millenium Edition

I was talking with Dave Harris about search functionality in Vista compared to XP, and he dropped this:

"Vista is the new Millenium Edition"

What do you think? How pleased are you with the latest and greatest OS from Microsoft compared to what has become a very stable operating platform in XP?

There's no way that Vista can be compared to ME. ME was unstable to the point of being non-operable. Vista is as stable as all get out, but people don't like the user experience.

I've been running Vista for about 4 months now and I haven't had any issues with it. The UAC complaints that I've read have been far more loud and boisterous than the actual experience that I've had. Personally I find the UAC to be somewhat cumbersome, but it is fairly rare that it bothers me (I have my install running with the default settings).

Probably the biggest disappointment is the amount of hardware that it takes to run the OS alone. I was lucky enough to have a laptop that can run it quite well, but anyone without a decent machine is going to be in for a slow, and perhaps painful, experience. 8/13/2007 5:19 AM | Donald Belcham

I have been running vista for probably 6 months and am pretty disappointed in the visible improvements (lots of security stuff done to the OS but its not visible to most users).

There are a few good things in Vista. UAC is annoying but the ability to run as a non-administrator and elevate when necessary is good (I do hate that just to view information you need to confirm sometimes though). The start menu and search has really grown on me.

Other than that I dislike it. It is a huge resource pit and really cut down the battery life on my laptop I found until I disabled the UI enhancements. I don't know if it is just me but there are lots of times that I can not rename / delete files or folders I have created yet the next day the delete fine (might be the indexer holding a lock) which just frustrates the crap out of me as you get some message stating it can't delete it so you need to elevate, then a UAC prompt, then another prompt that says it still could not do it. I have also found a lot of software is still not compatible but that was the same when XP first came out too.

I don't really see much in benefits to go to Vista. Not much in real improvements that I can see for the cost of it.

I've been dual-booting between XP and Vista for 5 months. I always end up in XP after a few days. Vista is nice, but there are so many programs that I use daily that I can't get working on Vista, so I'm back in XP to use them. Media Center on Vista works very well and seems to work better with my xbox 360 than XP's media center. I use Vista for all of my DVR needs which works fantastic.

Aero is cool, but gets old quick. I really don't care about the eye candy after a few days of seeing it over and over. Vista's got a better start menu and search too. Its a little faster feeling, but not a ton. The Flip3D feature has been worthless to me. I've used it once, but I think it could be useful if I could get a button to trigger it on my mouse.

So I'm stuck between going back and forth between XP and Vista nearly weekly. 8/13/2007 8:56 AM | solid

I've got some mixed feelings. I have installed Vista on 3 machines, 2 laptops and 1 x64 desktop.

On my develoment machine I have had some odd issues causing me to consider a reinstall. I think some of the issues are due to a Cisco VPN client. It stopped working and now I cannot uninstall it, I think this may have something to do with some network services behaving oddly. I think this may also have something to do with me being unable to sync my phone. I also cannot get anything bluetooth to work. I think a majority of these are driver related.

On my other laptop it seems to work fine. I only do some light browsing on the machine, but oddly enough it wants to sync my phone up as well.

Well, I was about to post that I don't like Vista too much but that it's "ok". I walked away from my laptop and came back to a BSOD! :-(

I've been getting these BSOD's occasionally since I got the laptop and installed Vista in January of this year. It only happens about once or twice a month, but in my books that's too often.

Add in the unbelievably slow file copying (especially network transfers) and the other general slowness in the UI (like unlocking the desktop) and I'm on the verge of going back to XP.

Honestly, I can't think of a single Vista feature that I couldn't live without (maybe Start menu search, but it's not a deal breaker). 8/20/2007 3:41 AM | Jeremy Wiebe

The problem is that Vista isn't an "install it on your old machine" type of OS...you pretty much need to buy a new one made to run it...which I admit isn't the best practice...but I bought a new laptop made for it and its running smoooothly.
