I turned thirty today. Not really sure how I feel about that. I don't often think about how old I am. Others have my whole life. To them, I've always been the young guy. Even when I wasn't, people treated me like I was. I have a young face so that's part of it. I'm also interested in a lot of things that make me seem younger. Cartoons, video games, comic books and all kinds of toys. I love them still and don't plan on stopping loving them any time soon. So I've always been considered younger.

But now, I'm not really the young guy anymore. I'm not twenty something. I'm thirty. As the card my sister sent said, teenagers all over the world think I'm old.

I'm just not sure what it means to me though. I usually take time to reflect every year. I know a lot of people use New Years for that, but for me it's always been Christmas morning. I love to get up really early on Christmas morning, 3 or 4 a.m. I've been doing this ever since I was a kid and it's not because I want to dig through the presents to see what I got. I never did that... I've just always enjoyed that moment of quiet peacefulness. The Christmas lights twinkling on the tree and the silent stillness of the house. I like to lay on the couch and and think about my life and the past year. I think about the future and what's coming and what I want to come. It's a great time and something I look forward to every year.

That's how I feel today. This age just feels like a big milestone in my life. A marker on the path of where I've been and a nice place to stop and reflect on whether I'm going where I want to go. Overall, I'm extremely happy with where I am. Hard not to be really. Just thinking over everything in my life reminds me just how well things have gone. Some things have happened as a result of luck and some as a result of very hard work. I originally started typing all the great things in my life out, but I had to delete it because it looked so ridiculous all written down. I'm a pretty confident guy, but even I have some limits for how much I'll brag (really I do!).

So why did I write this post? Well, it's my birthday and I'm looking for presents of course! Really though, I know how I'm doing and I've got a good idea of where I'm going, but what I'm really curious about is where you are. I think one of my favorite things to do is the story swap. You guys are always hearing about my story, now I'm just asking you to take some time to share yours. If you think it's too much for a comment write a post and leave a link. But I'm curious, if you think about your life, how's it treating you? Tell me the good, the bad the indifferent. How did you get to where you are, are you happy you're there and where do you want to go (and what are you doing to get there)? I want to know it all!

So if you have a little time and want to give me a little birthday present, share a little and tell me just how is life treating you? Posted on Monday, June 9, 2008 7:00 PM | Back to top

Happy Birthyday! Dont feel old, Im 34 myself, and to be honest, life the last 2 years has been absolute #$%@$.. I mean, our car blew up on christmas eve, not to mention finances.. but.. Got a good family, were sticking together and working it out, the games programming is getting better, and life overall really isnt too bad.. and If I can finish building that time machine so that I never have to turn 35 in december, well then life will be grand!

Happy Bday again!

George my man, 30 is young. It was great to read your post today, as tomorrow is my 40th birthday. My brother flew in town for the occasion and we went fishing, drank beer, played darts, and went to a Braves' game. As we were talking about what turning 40 really means (he is 36), I came to a great conclusion. Different people reach this point at different ages, but turning 40 means that if I want something, I buy it. If I'm buying something, I buy the best so I don't have to buy it again later when it wears out. I'm no longer cutting corners, I'm no longer trying to "keep up with the Jones". I like where I am, I know where I'm going, and I'm no longer trying to figure out "What I want to do when I grow up". 40 is good.

Happy Birthday!!!

Youngster! I'll be 42 in August. I'm sure you're having a better time than me, I'm getting over a back surgery to fix a ruptured disc and a compressed sciatic nerve. See, things could be worse. :D

So you didn't get any presents for your birthday?

First of course, happy birthday. 30 isn't that old. I'm 23 and I still consider 30 pretty young.

My story: I played a lot of video games all through childhood. Met some folk in high school that loved games (one of them could program, one of them could model in 3D, and one of them loved video games more than me). We decided to make a 2D isometric RPG. We developed it for 2 years until our programmer moved to England and the project died. A year later (a year of C++ and Psych) I followed him out there to study electronic engineering. 3 years of that I moved back to the states with a lot of great experiences. I'm trying to get back in to game development (probably solo this time). I'm attempting to learn C# and Python.

I'm happy here. Unemployed, but happy with where I've traveled and what I'm trying to do.

I hope your 30's treat you well, I'm planning for my 20's to treat me well.

Happy Belated Birthday George,

I miss working with you. You are one of the truly great guys in this world. Stay young and teach your boys to do the same.

Never grow up, never surrender.

Dude, you ARE young! When I was your age, I was still 6 years away from having my FIRST child. Just think, when you're as old as me, your kids will be mostly gone. Well, unless you and S decide to try one more time for a girl :-)

Me, what am I doing at the ripe old age of 44? I took my boys to preschool for the LAST time, ever... See, wouldn't you rather be just hanging out, drinking a beer and talking about how cute the kids used to be when you're my age?

Wow, strange ideas. I hit 30 last year and it's been the greatest time of my life. Every year past the last has just gotten better and better, but maybe that's my retention of my youthful vitality, who knows. ;)

I'm sure it will be the same for you.

My life is treating me great!
I'm already twenty, feeling old yet I feel that I'm matured enough. I hope this feeling is true. Good for you that you have experienced a lot in life since you are already thirty. I'm happy that I found an inspiration in you because I am now concerned for my future and I guess everyone should be.

Happy Birthday man!

I am getting closed to 26, still finding myself nowhere in life. Too many stuff to handle. I guess that's what I must go thorough to be a real adult.

Well, look at the bright side.
