I’m looking for some advice in buying a netbook.  My work laptop is a true desktop replacement device.  As such, it’s not the most portable device around.  So, for doing email, document editing and web browsing I’m looking at getting a netbook.

I’ve been looking at the Acer Aspire One 10” netbook.  I’ve seen the smaller 8.9” Aspire One but thought the slightly larger screen might be nice.

However, all the netbooks are within $50 or so of each other.  So, I thought I’d do some research.  CNet reviews like the Eee PC and the MSI Wind over the Acer.  But, what about the netbooks from Dell and HP?

I want something fairly inexpensive as I don't’ plan on doing development or anything on it, just ‘normal’ computing tasks.

Any advice?

I suppose you're looking at 10" netbooks. I wouldn't go for a Dell or HP because of their higher cost. Check out the Eee 1000HE and MSI Wind U100. Acer's 10" isn't up to par, but Acer rules the 8.9" sized netbooks.

They all have roughly the same processor, RAM, and screen size, so I've been concentrating on other aspects.
Battery cells- shoot for 6 or at least 4. Say no to 3-cells.
Hard drive- shoot for Solid State. Big difference in response time and battery usage. Who needs a huge hard drive on a web surfing machine?
Reputation- Asus (Eee PC) has been in the game the longest. Next come Acer, Dell, and HP.

Check out the Eee Pc 1000HE. I got one and it is sweeeet. You cant get better for the price right now, but the NVIDIA ION platform once release will provide better graphics.

Thanks all. I'm now leaning toward the Eee PC 1000HE. Mostly same specs as Asus but a couple hours better battery life. Bit heavier, but still more mobile than my 17" laptop. Only slightly more $.

Hi there,

I'm trying to decide between the Lenovo S10e and the Acer Aspire One D250 10.1 (which I can get for about the same price) ... the main differences I can see are that the Lenovo has a 6 cell battery whereas the Acer has a 3 cell battery. Both have bluetooth. I've read multiple reviews of both and they seem to come out with a similar rating.

Does anyone have any recommendations re one over the other?

Thank you :)
