Brian Scarbeau Insights from a seasoned Computer Science Trainer

Well, we are in the home stretch of our learning of XNA. We have used the excellent tutorial by Charles Cook that is located on the XNA creators club site.

Beginner's Guide to XNA Game Studio Express

This all-in-one tutorial is everything you need to get started with XNA Game Studio Express. Follow along with in-depth video tutorials with source code examples to learn how to create 2D and 3D games from scratch. I'm hoping this tutorial can get updated to XNA version 2.

My students concentrated on creating a 2D shooter game with this tutorial and they are ready to create their own 2d game. I will review The Game Design Sequence with them that comes from The online resource The Art of Computer Game Design by Chris Crawford. Here are the steps:

CHOOSE A GOAL AND A TOPIC
RESEARCH AND PREPARATION
DESIGN PHASE
I/O Structure
Game Structure
Program Structure
Evaluation of the Design

PRE-PROGRAMMING PHASE
PROGRAMMING PHASE
PLAYTESTING PHASE
POST-MORTEM

XNA MVP, George Clingerman has some nice documentation on his NurfHerder game that shows the design. I'll use this as a guide for my students to follow when they design their game.

The students will have a couple of weeks to be able to design their game. The next step will be to deploy them to the XBOX via XNA creators club.

We're almost there!
