I know the title for this post isn't appropriate. Please bear with it or give any suggestion for the title...

Im used to work on VS2005 but recently i've installed VS2008 on the same machine. Being a lazy person i rather prefer typing devenv on Run then doing multiple clicks. But when i installed VS2008 it overwrote the VS2005 settings i.e. now VS2008 opens whenever i type Run->devenv. As im still doing lot of development in VS2005 i cant open it from Run. I've looked on Google to revert back the devenv settings without uninstalling the VS2008 but havent find any success. So, i came up with a solution i want to share with you people.

  • Open regeistry editor by typing regedit on Run
  • Locate and open the following key
    • My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\devenv.exe
  • Change the path given in this key from VS2008 to VS2005 e.g. on my machine previously it was C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe for VS2008, i changed it to VS2005 path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe.

Microsoft have issued the following warning with respect to the Registry Editor:

"Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk."

How to open the registry editor

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type Regedit and press Return. The registry editor opens.

How to back up the registry

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup (i.e.backup the current settings).

  1. Open the Registry editor.
  2. On the 'Registry' drop-down menu, click 'Export Registry File'.
  3. In the Export range panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup.

Hi I also had a same problem:

I left devenv as default to vs2005
then added new key
devenv2 -- to VS2005
devenv3 -- to VS2008
and now
devenv4 -- to VS2010 :)
