Raw and sometimes unedited notes based on my experiences with VMware, Thin Clients, Linux etc.
A lot of what I get involved in has a security element, for those articles that do touch on Security I'll add this category link.
So if you have a look at the MSTSC.EXE file that starts the RDP session and use the /? to call further info from the component you get something very much like this: But if you dig a just a touch deeper you will find that the MS Terminal Services Client or RDP Client as it is more commonly known draws the config information for most of its settings from the simple DEFAULT.RDP file that will typically be saved in the Users profile. (see example below) So if you want to make changes to the way it behaves ......
I found a rather interesting Magazine down at the newsagents over the weekend called Hakin9 (Issue 2/2007), more can be found at www.en.hakin9.org , and it would appear to be the Alter Ego if you like of the Software Developers Journal? There was a very interesting Consumers Test on Personal Firewalls that indicated that the Comodo Personal Firewall was the best at keeping things secure with Jetico and Zone Alarm rounding out the other two podium positions - what was quite suprising is that Comodo ......
I spent a rather frustrating day yesterday trying to book an Exam on Prometric's Web Site yesterday, if you want to run through their Test Takers menu system you will be prompted to decide to look for IT Certifications and then coose which Vendor aligned Certification Track you are interested in - at this point it should redirect you to the appropriate page - well what you end up with is a fancy "Page not found" message. Eventually I sucumbed to ringing the 1800 number - while I was on the line I ......
Well, some might say that this highlights a very good reason not to Buy CD's? But that would be somewhat cheeky? ;-) In an interesting aside to this though that I read today in PC Pro is the comment about the people and their PC's that have been effected by this must surely be running Anti-Virus in some flavour or other? And it's more than likely this was the case that 80 - 90% of these people were running a fairly up to date Virus Definition File? And if this was the case - how come the AV Protection ......
Recently I have been looking in to some issues relating to mixed Novell and AD Authentication at customers sites and there does not seem to be too much information that is readily available so I thought it might be useful if I post some of the details and links here as a helper to others? ;-) One of the most interesting points is that it would appear that Novell really hasn't done much to the Novell Client in quite a while, and even with the advent of Vista it has not so much revisited the classic ......
It is something of a shame that Symantec is not making the best of this acquisition, especially when you consider the amount of change and hype in the Virtualization space over the last 14 months since Symantec announced the purchase? I made the comment only a few weeks ago (Thinstall quick out of the blocks) that it was quite gratifying to see good technology not sitting by the sidelines waiting for the politics and marketing to settle before it can again back on with getting the work done - but ......
Well I do find this amusing as last night we were just watching the Top Gear episode where Ranulph Clarkson and Ranulph May attempt to race Ranulph Hammond to the North Pole using a truck - as ever Jeremy Clarkson is forever the irreverent motor mouth and larrikin in a likeable way and we actually found ourselves cheering for Hammond to beat them with the Dog Sled. So it's no surprise to see Clarkson so spectacularly misjudge how easy it can be to have your Banking details abused? I guess he has ......
I have been trying Vista on a corporate Laptop over the holidays in advance of getting hold of the "Approved" corporate image for my laptop and in some ways it's a clunker - so if you know what you're doing and want to "trim" some of those annoying messages and confirmations then this might be just the tool for you? Vista4Experts Current Version: 1.0.0.1 Download Vista4Experts Vista4Experts is kind of a treat for computer experts who don't want security center notifications, User Account Control ......
I found this article today at CIO via an Article at Doug Browns site www.dabcc.com and thought it too good to just post the quote. This is exactly why Virtualization is shaking up the IT market so much - it has the capacity to drastically change the way you think about "Flexibility" and "Agility". Being able to provision on the fly in 30 minutes or so doesn't hurt either - and it's this very reason that makes concepts like VDI seem so very attractive. Virtualization at Warp Speed: How One Company ......
Hi All, I have been posting both at this site as well as at my new blogging home of www.techagility.info for a few weeks now, and although I still have some tweaking to do on the graphics side of things, it's time to open the doors for all. I will probably still drop the odd post this way, but essentially all is now going to the new site. So the home page is at www.techagility.info and if you are after the feed then you can find it at www.techagility.info/feed See you there? ;-) ......
Looks like MS have not had a good month on this subject? Still, looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel? :-) Stealth Windows update prevents XP repair By Scott Dunn A silent update that Microsoft deployed widely in July and August is preventing the "repair" feature of Windows XP from completing successfully. Ever since the Redmond company's recent download of new support files for Windows Update, users of XP's repair function have been unable to install the latest 80 patches from Microsoft. ......
So after you have survived another update Tuesday you are thinking that all's well with the on-line world? Perhaps it's worth checking all those other media snap-in's and add ons to make sure you have minimized the security implications? And don't think that you're safe just because you're running Firefox, etc? As an example this was what the scan came back with for my Laptop: Applications / Result Version Detected Status Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 Adobe Reader 7.x 7.0.9.50 ......
From TheRegister: Best sort this out straight away if you are using any variant of Norton AV? Symantec security products less than secure Two words: Live Update By Dan Goodin in San Francisco ? More by this author Published Thursday 9th August 2007 23:27 GMT In a world where digital gremlins seem to lurk in almost every shadow, many of us feel safer using an internet security package. But for those using many Norton security products who haven't updated recently, that feeling is a false sense of ......
So far in speaking with Clients this certainly reinforces what I'm hearing - no one seems in any hurry to go and install Vista - so far I know of only one Compant here in Australia that has plans to install this in the next 6 months. Business doubts grow about Vista migration Gregg Keizer Users are happy with what they have or considering Linux and Macs Fewer businesses are now planning to move to Windows Vista than seven months ago, according to a survey by patch management vendor PatchLink, while ......
Yes for your Bluetooth enabled car! fancy resetting that annoying Maintenance sign? Is this for real? Another wow from me, this can only bring real benefits in roadside repairs, especially given the way modern vehicles are developing more of a propensity for reliance on electronics. More here courtesy of MSMobiles, or the full story at Vital Engineering ......
