Thin Clients, VDI and Linux integration from the front lines.... Raw and sometimes unedited notes based on my experiences with VMware, Thin Clients, Linux etc. Citrix I hesitate to use the word Expert or Guru, because there is always someone else who knows more than I do. Having said that, I nearly always know someone who will know the answer. Please - if you disagree with anything posted, please reply and discuss, chances are it's me who's ignorant?
Login Consultants benchmarking tool to compare VDI vs. SBC?
My only disappointment is that we are currently in the middle of moving our current Solutions Centre from one Office location to the other so it'll be some while before I get a chance to test this. It certainly looks quite impressive and it does have some lofty aims, but from a brief look through as well as their well deserved reputation based on Flex Profiles I'm sure this will stand up to it's promises. Test Scenario’s With login VSI you can compare many different scenarios: • VDI vs. SBC • VMware, ......

Thinstall to be reborn as ThinApp under VMware's new management?
So along with Alessandro I'm curious as to why the name ThinApp has been chosen as it does have more than a passing resemblance to Citrix's new XenApp? I wonder if this is any indication of the coming marketing campaigns in the push for customers attention in the Desktop Virtualization market? ;-) VMware ThinApp is the final name for Thinstall technology In January 2008 VMware, a hardware virtualization company, acquired an application virtualization startup called Thinstall. The plan is to use the ......

Citrix Pricing discounts of up to 44% to get from Winframe and XP to PS 4.0??
Now some of you may recall that I recently heard a rumour that Citrix were definately prepared to be somewhat flexible on their pricing (especially if you mentioned that you might be considering something like Ericom instead?) well now it appears that they have taken that somewhat further? OK, so first of all the Good News - this includes one years Subscription Advantage (So you should also qualify for the next release?) Future vision of VDI? What if the Hypervisor was cheaper and flexible enough to run on BladePC's/BladeWS's - could vMotion/XenMotion then switch on demand?
I am sure this is not really what VMware had in mind when they were touting VMware OnDemand? I'm guessing they had more of an idea that it would combine some of the benefits of ACE with ESX? ;-) I have just got back from some training in Houston and while listening to a question from a colleague from the UK where he asked if "VDI was going to be able to use the full suite of Hypervisor functionality like vMotion..." and that got me thinking... Some of the Conventional Wisdom around the place holds ......

Live Demos of VDM2 from VMware and XenDesktop from Citrix
In some cases the regular methods of "Going to Market" with a new product is fraught with pitfalls as it is conceived by Marketing and/or Product managers who then seem to loose sight of what the Customer is actually after - I've always thought it better to get the product and solution in front of the customer as quickly as possible and let them make up their mind and give feedback? In all fairness, with some of the larger Vendor's there is so much red tape and bureaucracy this makes it nigh on impossible ......

Developing Applications for Server 2008? How to make sure they are compatible with Terminal Server and the other new features:-
Back when I was focused on Citrix Servers and helping people get the best out of existing Terminal Server and Citrix Server installations it was somewhat surprising how many Applications AND Developers all do their own thing in whatever way they like with no regards to Standards like these. There was similar material from Microsoft regarding Server 2003 and I always kept the details in template email ready for when asked. Anyway, these links below should start you off in the right place? Windows ......

Hi All, I have been posting both at this site as well as at my new blogging home of www.techagility.info for a few weeks now, and although I still have some tweaking to do on the graphics side of things, it's time to open the doors for all. I will probably still drop the odd post this way, but essentially all is now going to the new site. Pricing for ESX Server 3i (stand alone) to be less than $500?
So Allessandro is certainly well connected in the Virtualization space and as XenSource will be clearly getting some serious airtime in just over 2 weeks time at the newly re-badged iForum (oops, Application Delivery Expo) hosted by Citrix then I'm sure that VMware will be trying to make sure that it has some choice announcements just before and even during the last week of October. Note to self - must be less cynical ;-) For those who will be attending iForum 2007 in Las Vegas, please drop me a ......

Any chance of an independent ROI Calculator for VDI and Virtual Desktops?
Now this is quite interesting because up until now most of the news and information (dare I say Hype?) has been based around the benefits of flexibility and high availability (like VMotion, etc.) but we are now starting to see enough real world examples of Server and Desktop Virtualization that we can have broad benchmarks or rule-of-thumb guidelines that are indicative of the savings that can be gained even at the design stage when details of the intended environment are almost non-existent? Although ......

Microsoft's Viridian at 1Mb to be significantly smaller than VMware's ESX 3i hypervisor at 32Mb?
I was checking some other news over at ChannelRegister and found this interesting little snippet. I'm sure the Microsoft marketing will make a lot more of this than it's worth? ;-) Microsoft counters VMware insanity with optimistic frown I'm pretty sure that this is part of the reason VMware has pushed so hard with ESX Server 3i - a 32MB version of its flagship product that can and will be embedded into the flash memory of servers. Dell, IBM, HP, Fujitsu and others have lined up to include ESX 3i ......

ClearType Bandwidth can increase bandwidth requirments for RDP sessions by up to 600%?
In a post by Helge Klein at IT from inside he has done sometesting regarding the impact of utilising ClearType across RDP connections and the upshot of it is that this has the potential to increase your bandwidth usage by 300% or if using 32bit colour this can be as high as 600%. Has VMware now settled on the killer VDI Broker?
So from Allessandro's Virtualization.info he has some other interesting news... Pano Logic's idea of a thin client? Perhaps with a better pricing model it might stand a chance?
Well I must admit it sounds great, but by using PCI-over-IP does have it's disadvantages, like Video and Audio which are both mandatory these days on business client devices. The current model that both Citrix and VMware (they do agree on something? ;-) use is to have Video be streamed natively to the client device and then use locally installed codec's to reassemble and display the video stream. If you have no CPU or Memory then this will have to be done back at the server - then streamed in uncompressed ......

Citrix and XenSources road to market just got steeper - VMware's price bubble coming under threat?
Very interesting news, especially when you consider this is coming out just a week prior to the VMworld event in SanFrancisco? Surely this news might have been worthy of being released then? So why the rush? Does this actually indicate that VMware is concerned about competion? I wonder how VMware's stock price is going? Can you run Citrix Presentation Servers as Virtual Servers on VMware ESX?
Yes you can, but would you want to? This has come up again with an excellent post from Rene Vester at BrianMadden A short guide to virtualizing Presentation and Terminal servers on VMware ESX 3 The main point about this is that it has always been a criteria of selecting suitable Guest systems to be hosted on ESX that they are relatively lightly loaded - otherwise what is the point of Virtualizing a Server - if you can't make some gains by way of consolidation then you are simply adding another layer ......

One thing is for sure, if Microsoft were to buy/offer XenSource $1b and trump Citrix - then I think we would be able to safely say "the bubble has burst" on Tech Stocks again.... Having said that, this <cough> reporter from TheDeal then goes on to compare Microsofts Virtualization efforts to Google's acquisition of Green Border for the browser virtualization technologies - so on that little insight I'm not going to be worrying too much if I was Citrix. XenSource acquisition Q&A with Simon Crosby and Wes Wasson
This Q&A from Alessandro is quite interesting from my point of view, but more importantly for this quote from Wes Wasson: XenSource does not get any revenue from the underlying hypervisor, nor will Citrix. Our revenue will come from adding a compelling set of application delivery value propositions on top of the hypervisor, whether it is Xen or Viridian. The more successful Viridian is, the more opportunity Citrix will have to sell value-added application delivery offerings on top of this platform, ......

Jong-Yong Yun, CEO of Samsung Electronics on gadgets - A lesson for Citrix?
In an article in the FT today Jong-Yong Yun makes the comment - "Watching TV on a mobile phone is a pleasure" His pet peeve that makes him mad is - "A gadget which I cannot instinctively figure out how to switch on and off - and use - makes me mad. If consumers need a manual to learn how to operate it, it cannot gain popularity. A gadget should be simple enough for everyone." This for me resonates with what I feel Citrix needs to look at next..... Citrix still has a lot of good will in the marketplace ......

Better Rebates To Tempt Citrix Partners - Advisory Rewards to be increased from 10 to 15%??
I'm just checking the date on the calendar to make sure it's not actually the 1st of April, because I'm starting to suspect that Citrix is actually starting to knuckle under and compete? Don't think so? I don't blame you, but have a look at this: Posted at SmartOfficeNews.com.auCitrix is increasing the amount of rebates it offers partners in an attempt to get them taking advantage of the company's newest products. From Citrix to Neoware
So a few people I have spoken to have asked me recently why the switch to Neoware after Citrix? Well, let's just say that the decision to leave Citrix wasn't made by me.... So that leaves... why Neoware? Well, when I weighed up all the positives that I uncovered during my research in to them I was quite impressed with what they have managed to accomplish in the last 5 - 7 years, as well as what they are doing now to grow the business. Some highlights of these details are: 63% CAGR over the last 5 ......

Trying to book an Exam on Prometric's Web Site? Page not Found?
I spent a rather frustrating day yesterday trying to book an Exam on Prometric's Web Site yesterday, if you want to run through their Test Takers menu system you will be prompted to decide to look for IT Certifications and then coose which Vendor aligned Certification Track you are interested in - at this point it should redirect you to the appropriate page - well what you end up with is a fancy "Page not found" message. Citrix's "Project Kent" - Citrix now going for a bold mission statement?
So I've heard some rumour that this is one of Citrix's next project ideas? On the surface of it, it makes good sense because it will also cause (by default) the very integration between the various product lines that exist today after the recent acquasitions, not to mention that it will also provide a potential revenue stream to help fund this integration. I'd imagine that if it gains traction, both internally and with customers feedback, then the more successful it is then this will be the start ......

Warning - Imaging of Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 can cause STA's to fail
Just thought I would let you know of a little problem that one of our chaps came across today regarding the New PS4.0 STA. As you may know, the new STA (required for Citrix Secure Gateway) is built into Presentation Server 4.0 during the installation, this means that when the server is cloned the STA ID is also copied. This results in that only one server can be added to CSG. The file that holds the STA ID, is CtxSta.config. Modifying the ID and restarting the XML Service (or rebooting) allows the ......

Thoughts on Application Virtualisation or Streaming - how does Citrix's Project Tarpon compare with Softgrid and Altiris's SVS?
So among several other things this week I managed a quick sneak peak at an early (Alpha?) release of Citrix's Tarpon (Application Streaming) yesterday, what I found interesting was not that it would appear that Citrix are leaning towards using blue instead of red for some of the pretty bits? nor that there was a nice shiny new Citrix Client, but I suddenly realised that I was examining Tarpon from a purely Technical Focus and to really appreciate what might be possible meant that I had to shift to ......

Cool script to automate VMotion migration on receipt of a ProLiant pre-failure ticket
This came through on an email from HP's Mike Harpur, he does a regular update of technology that we might find useful - if you're interested drop hime a note asking to be included on his mailing list. A top UK VMware guy (Rick Allen) just wrote a neat ‘’how to’’ paper. It combines the power of HP Systems Insight Manager and VMware ESX Server in order to automate VMotion on receipt of a ProLiant pre-failure ticket. This solution uses the base HP Systems Insight Manager product ......

Just to let you know?  It looks like not all the posts with embedded images are coming thru cleanly?

If you find this to be the case, just try a right-click on the space and select "Show Image" - this would appear to correct this? Please let me know if this isn't reliable?

Stop whatever you are doing - the new display technology is now up with StarTrek and the Minority Report!
Have a look at these "commercially available" displays - this is fantastic - just as the price of Plasmas are tumbling because of the price of LCD's (with more technology enhancements down the track?) we now have real holographic displays - although in 2D? OK, so you don't think this really looks that good? Try the picture below? Or better yet - go and check out their web site. Now lets get back to the chap who was just boasting about how good his Home Cinema was?...... ;-)) Image: Supports full ......

Netscaler 7000 - Citrix's marketing is world class?
I've always thought that Citrix's marketing is World Class - what do you think? All I can say is, have a look at the Bezel on this: How much time and effort was spent on "pimping this ride"? Can you believe it? You can just see it now, a Customer ringing up to request a DOA because the pretty red light at the bottom isn't coming on.....? Come on, tell me what you really think? Is this going to be the start of a new Trend? Can you see IBM starting to add little blue lights to their Logo's? ;-))) ......

Microsoft, the big absentee of Virtualization?? Is Microsoft really committed to this?
Of all the Blogs and comments regarding Virtualization recently this is the one that I have found to be the most thought provoking. There was a time between 2000 and 2002 where I almost couldn't make my mind up whether to consolidate on VMWare or Connectix, depending on whether I needed USB support or something else at the time.... so have a look at the full article? I think Alessandro is on the money here, the way Microsoft is developing Virtual Server it's almost like they want to be in second ......

Ericom WebConnect 5.5 - a Citrix Alternative?
So, I was thinking today about what's happening in the SBC (Server Based Computing) arena....... I have posted earlier about what Ericom was getting up to, and so it would transpire that they have now released their version 5.5 of their Web Connect product, and as good as it is (I have been playing with the Beta) the client for the end user still defaults to an install location of C:\WebConnect Client 5.5..... etc - instead of C:\Program Files\WebConnect Client 5.5 - now this may be a small complaint ......

RUMOR!! - Citrix Licensing might actually be negotiable??
Now I do know that I have posted in the past about whether or not Citrix's monopoly might be a bubble waiting to burst - but I heard a rumor (and I will stress this is just a rumor!!) that one of the Govt. entities involved in the current NHS project that is supposedly locked in to a Citrix rollout were considering Ericom as an alternative?? Ericom promises the announcement of a “significant new enhancement” to its PowerTerm WebConnect application access solution.
So in amongst the various items that I keep a track of using Bloglines I also came across this little gem regarding Ericom, now I don't know about you but the phrase “significant new enhancement” does make me curious. The main reason that I'm keeping a track of Ericom is that their WebConnect technology is something that I feel could be a potential competitor to Citrix (depending on how it shapes up) especially with the enhancements that should be available in Longhorn? Connectra SSL-VPN and Citrix Web Interface - how hard can it be?
So I'd visited a client early last week to look at a System at a bank that had been installed by another Integrator. I believe they'd installed it as a PreSales or Proof of Concept, so it was obviously done pretty quickly and they didn't neccessarily hang around to finish it all off..... (more's the pity?) First tried setting Virtual IP for WSAPPDEV.EXE - this was enabled with 30 IP's available. Checked via Event Log that IP's are being issued to Clients. Vmware strickes back to Microsoft Virtual Server and makes GSX server free!
So hot of the press - this in from Bink Last November Microsoft released Virtual Server 2005 R2 with an astonishing price of $99 for standard edition and $199 for enterprise edition. Virtual Server is a direct competitor to Vmware GSX.Now it seems Vmware strikes back, they are going to make Vmware GSX server free! Is the Software Industry Mature or Ripe for Disruption?
On the back of my comments about Citrix and it's competitors, it was interesting to unearth this little gem about the Software companies from the viewpoint of a developer.... Oracle and SAP say that enterprise software is boiling down to three or four vendors. Why bother with all of the moving parts, they ask, while citing industry statistics that make it sound inevitable. I'm placing my bet on the other end of the spectrum. The next few years will see the rise and fall of technology empires and ......

So the new Orange 5000 (HTC Universal) is too big? Try this for a tiny Laptop/Tablet
So, what are my options? Well..... I will definitely have a look at the M2000 (HTC Wizard) and check that out for size. But in the meantime, if anyone is looking for the ultimate in a portable Laptop then perhaps you might want to track down one of these? The folks over at Mobile Reviews have a review of a Sharp Zaurus that weighs in at 300 grammes. You might have to look hard in the photo below to see it, it's that small. Although it's running Pocket Linux, I wonder if anyone's brave enough to try ......

Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) - Capacity Planning, Scalability ideas for 10,000 users?
This info has been passed on to me from Rob, one of the Citrix SE's here at Chalfont, UK. I'd be thinking that if you are looking at a large implementation of AG+AAC you might want to have a quick peruse of this before you submit your budget request? ;-) Read on..... Mmmm.... So at Rob's request - it would appear there will be another update to the AG shortly.... Setting up RSA with a pair of WI & CSG using WLBS? RSA client complaining about multihomed?
Just in case anyone else is searching for "PrimaryInterfaceIP"....??I had 2 x 2003 Servers running WLBS, WI4, CSG3 and RSA 6.0 Local Client and it still kept failing with "Multihomed host detected" ; "Primary IP assumed is x.x.x.x" appearing in the Event Log. we had tried setting both IP's on the Node in the RSA Console, but still no joy. TSProfile Path's - Sometimes it just comes back to the basics?
It seems recently we are getting quite a number of potentially new customers asking us to help with issues that they seem to have had some difficulty getting on top of. Generally the quickest and easiest way is just to fire up the trusty GoToAssist session and have a real "look" at what their issue is, that's when the fun starts. ;-)) But what has really prompted this blog is that when I did my first Citrix Admin course (It was on Winframe 1.6 back in 1996) it was really hammered in to us that you ......

Has Citrix reached the top of this cycle? Will the monopoly implode?
It was interesting to note a couple of different articles that popped up on Michel's site this week, it seems to me that Citrix might have pushed the Presentation Server revenues about as far as it can? In some ways they are acting like the 800 pound gorilla that does what ever it wants because it can get away with it? There's no doubt that Citrix is price sensitive in it's newer markets like the SSL-VPN play as well as NetScaler, etc. but in the Terminal Server market it is still quite a price to ......

User Mode Process Dumper Version 8.0 - for troubleshooting badly behaving Terminal Server apps?
I can only agree whole heartedly with Michael Roth over at ThinComputing that - "This util is sure to come in handy ....." The User Mode Process Dumper (userdump) dumps any running Win32 processes memory image (including system processes such as csrss.exe, winlogon.exe, services.exe, etc) on the fly, without attaching a debugger, or terminating target processes. Cybercrime 'more lucrative' than illegal drugs??
Looks like this slipped under my Radar over the Xmas break? More at the Register I would suggest that as all of these figures are estimates, they do need to be treated with a certain amount of caution, however it does point to a worrying trend that we all need to be vigilant both at work and at home? 1Estimates about dollar losses from e-commerce fraud ($2.8bn in 2005, according to CyberSource, for example) tend to pale in comparison to industry estimates of losses due to software piracy and computer ......

OK, somewhat off topic I must admit - however those of us involved in IT Strategy and Design always need to keep an eye on what drives the business - so it is only prudent that we do keep something of an eye out as to what is happening in the Global Economy as well as your Local Economy. Now I don't mean to be scaring anyone or being overly alarmist, but at the moment I feel the Economy here in the UK is doing quite OK, especially in Stocks and Shares - it's their turn on the Cycle - but still reasonable ......

I wonder how much of this is Citrix or MS developed technology? 10/10/2005 » Today at its 8th annual business and technology conference, Citrix iForum™ Global 2005, Citrix President and CEO Mark Templeton announced a major technology development initiative, codenamed ......

How does the new Citrix Access Gateway and Advanced Access Control architecture work?
They say a picture communicates as much as a thousand words?Try this for size? Bear in mind that for PoC (Proof of Concept) and smaller deployments there is really only a requirement for one device in the DMZ (AG or CSG/WI that you build yourself) and one on the Internal LAN (AAC) that would do all the work. From what I've seen in the past, there is no need to go beyond this until you start exceeding 150 - 200 concurrent users unless you want redundancy from the beginning ......

Out of the box:UserID: rootPassword: rootadminEth0: 10.20.30.40Eth1: 40.30.20.10Easiest way of resetting back to factory default - put in the CD and reboot, this will take about 15 mins or so.If you want to start of by connecting via HyperTerminal and the included Serial cable, be aware that it does take 5 mins or more to get it's act together. Orange offers cut-price broadband - £9.99/month for 2Mb
A quick check at both Wanadoo and Orange's web sites show this hasn't been posted yet but that's not a suprise. I'd also suspect that it will be capped at 2Gb. Now if you'd like a 2Mb Service that's uncapped for £14.99/month then head over to Force9 ;-) So far it has been a bit like Ronseal - it does what it says on the Tin!More at http://www.theregister.co.u... ......

More on Citrix Access Gateway 4.1.2..... and how it ties in to the new AAC (Advanced Access Control - or the old MSAM?)
I think this has been one of the most frustrating periods in (in the last xx years) with dealing with Citrix and their product line up........The acquisition of Net6 promised so much, but it arrived *in-house* at a time when they were clearly well into the next revision of MSAM and quite possibly already leaning towards the End-Point Analysis route. So consolidating the two Products/Software (MSAM/Net6) was probably a headache in itself, but then combine that with the Architecture, Design and the ......

Does anybody know how to Export/Import *Citrix* Policies?
This is a request if anyone knows of a script, that possibly uses MFCOM(?), to Export or Save the Citrix Policies?I have a client that *lost* the Dedicated Print Server (due to load and the RPC Service dying) last night and in the process ALL of the 500+ Network Printers in the CMC went AWOL. That's not too bad as they can always be reimported, but during all this the Citrix Printing policies decided to go walkies as well.So although this is a request, you might just want to consider how you might ......

Unable to Print from Presentation Server 4.0 when Connecting via ICA 9.0 Client - Anti-Virus on Citrix/Terminal Servers?
Now the reason I post this is that sometime back I was looking in to some issues at another Client's site and came across issues that were not necessarily the cause of the Symptom but they were rather strange. The resolution was to rollback McAfee server client to an earlier revision OR await the arrival of a patch from McAfee....... Did you want an SSL-VPN for home use? Think it might cost too much? Think Again!
Now how does this sound? I've only just been introduced to this today but it certainly makes me wonder how easy it is? So far looking through the documentation on this it's pretty slick, when I couldn't find Java 1.5 (a prerequisite...) it offered to go and download it for me AND it is covered by the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE.Certainly compelling enough to try? ;-)) Why not, it's the right price?UPDATE: This is so easy....... seriously simplifies SSL VPN - honestly, so long as you can read their ......

Coming releases at Citrix iForum - Las Vegas 9-12 Oct. - Access Gateway 4.2 and WISP (Web Interface - Share Point intergration)
I have had it confirmed from within Citrix that the latest release version 4.2 for the Access Gateway and Access Gateway Enterprise will be anounced and available for download through MyCitrix.Com a week later. The same goes for the WISP Project, it has seen a little news courtesy of BrianMadden's Site, but essentially this will be formally unveiled at Las Vegas iForum. To a certain extant this will also bring to a close Citrix's pursuit of the "Portal" space and I am assuming it will now be taking ......

Citrix and Google
I guess most of us dealing with Citrix Issues on a regular basis have just come to accept the fact that Citrix just doesn't allow the Google Bots access to their systems, and certainly not the Support Knowledgebase, and as a concequence I do tend to save a lot of their information locally and mine it with Google Desktop. Chatting to one of the Citrix Support staff yesterday it would appear that there may be a change on the way. In the past iteration of the Citrix Forum it was quite clear that it ......

Citrix Advanced Access Control 4.0 - Technical Overview
It's taken a while but it's now getting easier to see how Citrix will be defining how they integrate the older MSAM product with the Net6 hardware Appliance. As you look through the details towards the end of this Powerpoint you can see how it seems Citrix will be pitching the concept of either continuing to use your existing (if you have one of course?) CSG (Citrix Secure Gateway) that fronts for your Web Interface 3.0/4.0 and then deploying this Advanced Access Control Server in the LAN behind ......

BSOD (apparently random Blue Screen of Death):
Went to a customer’s the other day for what should have been a simple health check, and it turns out that their 25 odd Citrix Server Farm has recently been experiencing a problem whereby the Production Servers will routinely exhibit a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) and spontaneously reboot. As the servers were already set up to save a Mini Dump file and then reboot, this has somewhat kept the issue “liveable” with, but for some reason this wasn’t on their most important list ......

Thoughts on Altiris and VMWare - Are these two competing architectures?
Altiris: Using Altiris/HP RDP the concept s to automate the build process and script each process so that it is: Automatic, as much as possible Modularised, in that each separate step is done independently What this enables is that you can switch Hardware and you would only need to change the “drivers” section of script, everything else should be able to remain as it is VMWare: Can be run as a host on Windows Server or Linux O/S, or in the case of ESX Server be run on “bare metal”. ......
