Raw and sometimes unedited notes based on my experiences with VMware, Thin Clients, Linux etc.
Well, I think at last I've finally found the time, AND managed to find the specifics of what was holding this up so that I'm currently in the process of sycing the Phone with Exchange remotely via an AG+AAC connection back to the Exchange Server across the SSL VPN. What transpired is that out Exchange Server has an Equifax Cert, but not a regular Equifax cert, that would be too easy - this is the CA-1 variety that has an expiry of 2020. So as this wasn't built in to the WM5 device you have to go ......
Just looking through Google's news feed for Citrix and spotted this at VNUnet Thin-client software vendor Citrix grew its fourth quarter turnover by 26 per cent to $269m and its full year turnover by 23 per cent to $909m, compared to the same periods last year. Revenue from license updates also grew by 18 per cent and technical services revenue, comprising of consulting, education and technical support, grew by 33 per cent, both compared to the fourth quarter of 2004. Citrix also claimed that for ......
Rumour has it that there is quite likely to be **another** update to the AG+AAC, perhaps they will be adding something that will improve the alleged Load Balancing between devices?
Meanwhile I wonder if it's possible to lay a bet at the bookies about when the next version of CPS will be due out?
This from TheRegister - Demand drives sales up 19 per cent World+dog bought 244.9m mobile phones during the final three months of 2005, market watcher Strategy Analytics (SA) said today, adding that the figure is a record one. For the year as a whole, some 810.5m handsets shipped, up 19.1 per cent on 2004's total, 680.5m. SA reckons shipments will rise 14.8 per cent this year, to 930m units, before shooting past the 1bn mark in 2007. Ads_kid=0;Ads_bid=0;Ads_xl=... ......
Just in case you hadn't picked on this anywhere else? more at Engadget But I definately like Evan's spin on this....... Why does it seem that the RIM drama is really taking place on two trains heading in opposite directions: in the Patent Office where NTP's questionable patents seem close to being invalidated, and in federal court, where RIM is but one ruling away from being forced to shut down sales and service nationwide? Maybe it's because an injunction by Judge James Spencer on February 24th ......
More from TheRegister Taiwan's HTC saw sales leapt 66.2 per cent sequentially during the fourth quarter of FY2005, according to the PDA-phone maker's provisional, unaudited financial results. For the three months to 31 December 2005, the company realised revenues of TWD27.53bn ($862.32m), well up on the previous quarter's TWD16.56bn ($518.71m). Then, HTC reported a net income of TWD2.78bn ($87.08m) before tax - for Q4, the figure had risen 84.5 per cent to TWD5.13bn ($160.69m). But enough about the ......
From Michel at ThinComputing.net Softricity today announced record revenue for Q4 2005, rounding out the company's most successful year to date. Softricity more than doubled CY 2005 revenue over 2004, with 109% year-over-year growth. It closed out Q4 with 74% YOY growth. Read the full press release here. In any large Citrix Farm this technology can be very simply cost justified simply on savings for not having to bother doing any regression testing when adding new applications, as well as cost savings ......
So I discovered this on TheRegister... this device has almost taken the idea of convergence to new heights? Not sure if it's a Portable Media Player? with a 2mb pixel digital camera? oh, wait it's a phone! ;-) The IM-U100 sports a 2.6in display with a 15:9 aspect ratio. It's not quite the 16:9 ratio you see on a widescreen TV, or even a 2.35:1 you get at the movies, but it's better than the 4:3 ratio most phones offer. It's backed by a "high quality loud speaker", Pantech said. Ads_kid=0;Ads_bid=0;Ads_xl=... ......
Ah, so now for a topic close to my heart, seeing as I've got hold of my new C600 (did I mention that already? ;-) I'm keen to see just how much I can get the ActiveSync working *without* the MSFP. Now if you have any problems with ActiveSync I'd recommend you check out Chris De Herrera's site because this *ActiveSync 4.x Troubleshooting Guide* is the business as far as getting down and dirty with figuring out why the little Bleeep Bleep isn't connecting properly. The only reason I'm still strugling ......
Now I was searching on something different entirely (as is the case normally) but came across this interesting little note about running Asterix on VMWare at Christine.Net: Cool Hack #1: Performance Tuning for Asterisk VoIPKristian Kielhofner, the creator of AstLinux, showed the crowd his embedded Linux distribution for running Asterisk. This hack is important if you need your VoIP tuned for performance. First: Heavily loaded servers interfere with sound quality - but while you don't care if a web ......
So I icked up this little item from CoolSmartPhone, though it's a shame it's not much use to me as the new C600 doesn't have WiFi......... <snif>, but other than that it's very nice, love the new screen..... MSMobileNews have spotted that Woize now has a client available for the Smartphone. Woize is a bit like Skype in that it'll let you make lots of calls for very little money. There's also a version of the software for Pocket PC too (seen here) which lets you make and receive calls and do ......
Mmm, I'm not really sold on this as somethng I'd want to do? However everyone has different ideas of their needs and what sort of solutions will make things work for them, so I shouldn't just dismiss this straight away..... Indeed Citrix have already been making a point that the AG has been designed to accomodate VoIP and SIP from the start, as well as the CPS having the ability to assign Virtual IP's to executables, so as this article appears to demonstrate - it is possible. Still not sure why you ......
Again from Doug Brown: A new Citrix Article regarding problems with getting WISP working correctly, SymptomsAttempting to configure Web Interface for Microsoft SharePoint with Access Gateway with Advanced Access Control 4.2 fails with an access denied message. CauseIn order for Web Interface for SharePoint to work with Advanced Access Control, you must have the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server version of SharePoint with the service configured. Also, the Microsoft Single Sign-on Service for Web ......
This just in from DABCC: Trying to track down and resolve technical problems on a Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server environment could be one of the most frustrating experiences. To help you through the process, this document explains the necessary steps you need to do for effective troubleshooting on a Citrix environment. In addition, this document addresses some common problems. Written by Marcel van As, this document details the following: · Basic flow for Citrix troubleshooting· How ......
Check this little number out courtesy of EndGadget After hearing about it for months, it looks like the Asus MyPal A636 has finally dropped. This one, you may recall, is Asus' entry into the GPS-PDA market, and also includes Bluetooth, WiFi and a 3.5-inch display. Pocketnow took the A636 for a spin, and found that it's a solid performer with great battery life (over 8 hours with GPS on), good Bluetooth support and decent mounting hardware for car use. The major downside? The included Destinator PN ......
Supremes shun RIM - again The US Supreme Court has rejected Research in Motion's latest request that it weigh in on the Blackberry maker's battle with US intellectual property holding company NTP. The Court this week said it would not review the US Court of Appeals' August 2005 verdict that RIM had indeed infringed NTP's patents and which sent the case back to the District Court where RIM now faces the prospect of being told to stop offering its service to US users. More at TheRegister.co.uk So does ......
So this just in from Michel at ThinComputing ___________________________... a leader in endpoint security for the enterprise, today announced that it has joined the Microsoft SecureIT Alliance, a community of industry partners working together to provide security solutions for the Microsoft platform. AppSense will collaborate with other SecureIT Alliance members to identify new security features and combinations of products with services to ......
I'd imagine most people involved with Terminal Servers and/or Citrix Servers will have come across this at some stage, if you haven't you are missing out, but the thing is that it's not just for us guys (and gals) to play with - ANY environment that has Roaming Profiles can make use of this to seriously lock down and control Roaming Profiles. In my experience it's Roaming Profiles that is the biggest piece of crap that IT Support have to contend with, I can't believe that MS can label their O/S's ......
It would appear that some are a little dissatisfied with VMWare leaving the Mac community out of the loop so they've now opted to start an on-line petition to give VMWare a push, if you're a Mac user (or indeed, a potential Mac user?) then you might want to check this out and add your name to the list? Thanks to madhattekdiggs ......

Thanks to Marc for the heads up on this, but I think this is going to have to go on the "to do" list for the moment unless I get called on to look at Altiris specifically....

From MSMobiles: We were reporting lately that Motorola Q smartphone had been cancelled, so let's take a second look at this "cancellation situation", and let's see what Jason Gordon from Motorola: ... has to say about it: Q is a family of products and although the first Q will be based on CDMA/EVDO, there will be other members of the family that are based on other air interfaces. ... or in other words "Q smartphone is not cancelled and apart from CDMA-EVDO version of Q, there will be several other ......
I have realised that I have made something of an error in that I have failed to include Doug Brown @ DABCC.com in my list of RSS feeds, so I have taken a good look through the items that have been posted in the last month or so and posted a consolidated list here: But please take time to check out Doug's site and keep an eye on the MIAB ver 4.0 coming soon.... On the back of my comments about Citrix and it's competitors, it was interesting to unearth this little gem about the Software companies from the viewpoint of a developer.... Oracle and SAP say that enterprise software is boiling down to three or four vendors. Why bother with all of the moving parts, they ask, while citing industry statistics that make it sound inevitable. I'm placing my bet on the other end of the spectrum. The next few years will see the rise and fall of technology empires and ......
Now they'll be some people who'll look at this photo and swear it's been doctored to make it look as close as it is. I can't say I've seen worse, but some things very close, when the Pilot and/or crew are at the end of an excercise or in their last few days before heading back home, they do tend to let their hair down and do some outragous things - and most of the time they survive.... Just in case the image doesn't come thru properly? http://www.micom.net/oops/F... ......
So on the back of my comments earlier in the week about Nikon pulling out of the Film camera business comes this news from TheRegister that Konica-Minolta are to quit the photography market altogether. So if you hadn't realised by now, Cameras are definately just a commodity now, Konica-Minolta lost USD$62.3m on net sales of USD$1.01bn ......
Just for the record, I haven't forgotten that the C600 has finally actually become available in Orange's shops (or at least it is available here in Glasgow this week - don't ask!) but it really has been a case of getting around to finding the time to pop in and sort something out. Sometimes it pays to make some time for the other half and remember her instead of rushing off to salivate about the next bit of cool tech? (Anyone dare to comment? ;-) Anyway, from Jason's Blog: (talk about the gestation ......
This info has been passed on to me from Rob, one of the Citrix SE's here at Chalfont, UK. I'd be thinking that if you are looking at a large implementation of AG+AAC you might want to have a quick peruse of this before you submit your budget request? ;-) Read on..... Mmmm.... So at Rob's request - it would appear there will be another update to the AG shortly.... I would naturally assume that this would conincide with the Florida Partner Exchange coming at the end of the month, in the meantime if ......

OK, even I have to admit this is a real stretch from my regular Tech spiel, but this photo of the new Chevrolet Camaro Concept caught my eye, and it didn't hurt that it was the Aussie Engineers who'd help the Yanks get it together ;-). Mind you they always seem to take it just that further than is needed.......? More can be found here. Chevrolet Camaro Concept GMH-Vauxhall Monaro Here in the UK most of us would have at some stage seen the way Clarckson, et al (on TopGear) really had to admit they ......
Just in case anyone else is searching for "PrimaryInterfaceIP"....??I had 2 x 2003 Servers running WLBS, WI4, CSG3 and RSA 6.0 Local Client and it still kept failing with "Multihomed host detected" ; "Primary IP assumed is x.x.x.x" appearing in the Event Log. we had tried setting both IP's on the Node in the RSA Console, but still no joy. So I found a Support note from RSA that referenced "PrimaryInterfaceIP" but didn't dish out the details, but that was OK because this led me to a MS Article - Sdtest ......
It seems recently we are getting quite a number of potentially new customers asking us to help with issues that they seem to have had some difficulty getting on top of. Generally the quickest and easiest way is just to fire up the trusty GoToAssist session and have a real "look" at what their issue is, that's when the fun starts. ;-)) But what has really prompted this blog is that when I did my first Citrix Admin course (It was on Winframe 1.6 back in 1996) it was really hammered in to us that you ......
It was interesting to note a couple of different articles that popped up on Michel's site this week, it seems to me that Citrix might have pushed the Presentation Server revenues about as far as it can? In some ways they are acting like the 800 pound gorilla that does what ever it wants because it can get away with it? There's no doubt that Citrix is price sensitive in it's newer markets like the SSL-VPN play as well as NetScaler, etc. but in the Terminal Server market it is still quite a price to ......
Well I noticed this article in TheRegister last week.... Takes me back a bit, I'd been keeping an eye on the Digital Camera market for some while, when I finally took the plunge on a trip to South Africa back in 1998 and purchased a Nikon CoolPix 900 for a massive AUD$1,450 Duty Free. It may to seem like it now, but the 1.3 Megapixel camera was just starting to show promise as having a quality to match the SLR's. Who would have thought that Digital Cameras would have overtaken their SLR brothers ......
Thanks to Michel at ThinComputing.Net for this one.... The January 2006 edition of the HP / Citrix compatibilty guide: Citrix has collaborated with HP to test select HP printers and their associated HP print drivers in a Citrix Presentation Server and Citrix Presentation Server for Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition environments. This from Jason's Blog: CompactDba solution allows you to monitor/control SQL Servers from a Pocket PC!This looks like a pretty cool solution for SQL DBA's! You can use it to monitor your SQL Servers alerting you of any issues or problems that may be happening inside your infrastructure! Check out the details here Now I don't really get along with the PocketPC form factor - but if I was a SQL DBA this would definately make me take a serious long look at my preference for the SmartPhone form factor ......
How about this for another example of convergence? In this case it's not a convergence of devices, it's a convergence of technologies. By combining GPS with reference to 3 axis sensors measuring gravitational and magnetic fields to determine the true orientation of the SkyScout to the earth you can get what amounts to a personal guide to what you are looking at in the night sky. SkyScout's unique features include:“Tonight’s Must-See List” - When the SkyScout is turned on, it will ......
I can only agree whole heartedly with Michael Roth over at ThinComputing that - "This util is sure to come in handy ....." The User Mode Process Dumper (userdump) dumps any running Win32 processes memory image (including system processes such as csrss.exe, winlogon.exe, services.exe, etc) on the fly, without attaching a debugger, or terminating target processes. This handy little hint at Session Computing popped up on ThinComputing Windows Terminal Server and Citrix Presentation Server are wonderful ways to deploy secure applications to corporate users, however like anything else there are some guidelines to follow. This page lists best practices for securing Windows Terminal Server or Citrix Presentation Server. The really nice part of this is that it doesn't get bogged down with details - it just tells you like it is In the same vein of Security, be aware ......
Michael Roth over at ThinComputing.Net has been busy this morning ;-) Hot off the press from Citrix (CTX107934) is a cute little tool to export all of your Published Apps available for FR3 and above. This functionality has been available for some while from Thomas's web site Citrix4ge.de for some while now, it'll be interesting to see if there any significant differences between the two approaches? DescriptionThe FarmAppUtil tool saves all the application properties with users and servers assigned ......
Looks like this slipped under my Radar over the Xmas break? More at the Register I would suggest that as all of these figures are estimates, they do need to be treated with a certain amount of caution, however it does point to a worrying trend that we all need to be vigilant both at work and at home? 1Estimates about dollar losses from e-commerce fraud ($2.8bn in 2005, according to CyberSource, for example) tend to pale in comparison to industry estimates of losses due to software piracy and computer ......
Had a very pleasant day out at the London Boat Show on Saturday with my mate Dave Oliver. While we were at it we chatted quite a bit about Technology as we do, we are geeks after all ;-), and in the process he did explain about this very cool Management System for mobiles from Sybase called iAnywhere's Afaria. How about scripted support for Window Mobile (2002 - Mobile 5), Windows CE (Version 2 -5) , Windows Win32 (Windows XP,2000,2003), Smartphone (2002- Mobile 5), Palm and Symbian? When you get ......
Well there's this little note over at CoolSmartPhone that goes on to explain that "For the unaware, it's a way of getting photos direct from your phone to a website without fuss." There are some handy links to Splashblog, Flickr.com, Textamerica.com, Webshots.com and ShoZu to start you off? I've had a little play with this, and although it certainly holds promise, I'm not going to devote too much more time on it until I at least update the C500 when the C600 actually becomes available as opposed ......

As a sailor and yacht racer I have always admired some of the products from Garmin, but I was at the London Boat show with Dave Oliver and was pleasantly suprised with some of the newer GPS units from Garmin. Their latest for Cyclists is the Edge 205 and Edge 305. Both are pretty similar providing: Easy-to-install—no calibration required. Just snap it in the included bike mount and go High-sensitivity GPS receiver—knows your position even in tree cover and canyons, making it extremely ......
As mentioned earlier, I had to complete some XP level Citrix exams just to recertify my CCEA Status, and in the end I have used www.actualtests.com as some study material. All I can say is that this stuff really does what it says on the tin. As it happens I manged to get away with getting 98% in just under 18 minutes - definately the business ......
Got lucky this morning didn't I? To actually comply with Citrix's requirements for ASC's (Authorised Support Centre's) we have to have a certain amount of accredited CCEA's and CCA's etc. My old exam's have been retired so I've had to resit some of the older XP exams. I haven't bothered with doing any based on MPS 3.0, figuring that I'll do the exams based on CPS 4.0 instead. Anyway, as I'm booking to do 1Y0 - 992 Deployment and Support, I noticed that there was a new one underneath that is labelled ......
I think it's quite possible that 2006 may well end up being the year that we see a very real step towards convergence of mobile devices. I'm thinking along the lines of IT Tech heads who currently go to see a customer in their car and may well find that at the end of their journey they are having to pack away the: Stereo Head Unit iPod or MP3 Player Navigation System Mobile Phone PDA Wouldn't it be nice to finally find a device that suits "your" form factor requirements that can do all of this in ......
OK, somewhat off topic I must admit - however those of us involved in IT Strategy and Design always need to keep an eye on what drives the business - so it is only prudent that we do keep something of an eye out as to what is happening in the Global Economy as well as your Local Economy. Now I don't mean to be scaring anyone or being overly alarmist, but at the moment I feel the Economy here in the UK is doing quite OK, especially in Stocks and Shares - it's their turn on the Cycle - but still reasonable ......
