Alfred Thompson who works for Microsoft invited me to go to this event. Alfred is a former high school computer science teacher and I worked with him on the Microsoft Faculty Advisory Board. He works hard promoting high school programming for his company. So why the AHOY? Well, this event is on the Disney Wonder Ship and it sails to Nasseau, Bahamas and the Disney Castaway Island. I'm sure you think that I'll be getting a good tan during my time there but the agenda is packed with interesting speakers ...
This week, my fiance' and I got a Wii. I say that wii both got one, but in truth, we got it because (I am not making this up) she wanted one. We played one at a friend's house, and on the way home, within minutes of getting in the car said "Can we get one of those, do you think?" I almost wrecked the car. Sheri is definitely one of the most understanding people in the world about my fascination with geeky stuff, and thinks it's part of my "charm" (her word, not mine). However, I wouldn't have evar ...
Okay, so here is a little gaming history on me. I started as a traditional pen-and-paper D&D gamer way back in the 80s and I played the classic "Gold Box" games like Pools of Radiance. But at some point, I grew up, got a job, got married and had kids. With each transition came less and less time for games. Now I find that I have no time for lengthy gaming endeavors such as D&D, World of Warcraft, or even Oblivion. What I have found as a fun replacement are the transitional board games that ...
UPDATE (12/17/2007): My blog has moved. This post is now located at: http://jason.whitehorn.ws/2... Screen capturing your XNA game on Windows is a straight forward task, unfortunately it is not as easy if your game is running on the Xbox. Luckily Shawn Hargreaves explained an interesting technique for capturing screenshots from Xbox XNA games. He proposes using System.Diagnostics's Trace method to transfer data from the Xbox 360 to your PC ...
I already had VS 2005 Team System installed and I have downloaded and installed the Windows MC SDK 5.0, Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for the .NET Framework 3.0 and Windows Vista SDK for .net 3.0.I have been going through the Windows Media Center SDK doc and have been finding it very useful. It always amazes me the quality of the documentation MS provides with their products. I'm currently about 20% or 30% through the doc.The doc tells me that I have 3 different technologies to choose from. Those ...
I made a tongue-in-cheek comment about why I don't switch to Mac OS X on a recent post to which Jeff Julian made a comment that got me thinking. What would it take to get you to switch to Apple? For me it would take a two-punch combo: Visual Studio for the Mac or an equally good development environment for Ruby on Rails. (I mostly do web development.) A music and video subscription model to iTunes. If I could get that, I would seriously consider trading in my laptop, Zune and Xbox for a MacBook, ...
Dear Microsoft, I understand that you are trying to go for a unified interface for the Zune just like iTunes. But would it kill you to add support for TV shows recorded by Windows Media Center so we don't have to do things like this? In the short term: Please add .dvr-ms support in the next minor Zune software update. It's not that hard and I'm not asking for anything special. Just have them show up under videos. In the long term: Please add a TV section to compliment Music, Videos, Podcasts (you ...
I think the guy that wrote this article just woke up one morning and thought, "Let's see how many people I can piss off today." Here is what he has to say about his experience with open-source IDEs. They were slow, flaky and frustrating. I very soon abandoned the Java world – I couldn’t stand the tools, the debuggers were crap or non-existent and the documentation was sparse one-dimensional and uninspiring. There is nothing out there in the open source world that can begin to compete with the fluidity ...
Tech night 07 was a great success at Lake Highland Prep. There were close to 50 students and parents in attendance to listen to Tom Carbone who is the Technical Director at the Florida Interactive Academy in Orlando. Tom has many years of game programming experience working for Microsoft and Electronic Arts and other companies as well. He spoke on how math and science are used to create video games. Tom spoke about mathematics and the skills programmers must have to create games. His emphasis on ...
Last weekend I bought a Samsung DCB-P850R PVR to make digital cable recordings. I already had PVR solution where I connect my XBOX with my Microsoft Media Center PC, but was not completely satisfied with this because I could only record analog TV with it. So, now I can record digital TV as well, for which I'm really happy, but there are still some features that are missing. Here's a comparison between the Samsung PVR and MCE. Pros of Samsung PVR Being able to record digital TV ; better quality and ...

I love mini-golf games. This one is releasing soon on Xbox Live. Hope it's good. "3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures," from developer Wanako Games and publisher Sierra Online, allows gamers to putt their way through 36 fun-filled holes of manic minigolf action on wild courses that range from the Old West to outer space and feature a bevy of crazy hazards and obstacles ...
UPDATE (12/17/2007): My blog has moved. This post is now located at: http://jason.whitehorn.ws/2... When multithreading on the Xbox 360, here are a few things to keep in mind. Affinity In multithreaded programming, programmers often lack the ability to specify the Processor Affinity of a thread. Even when API calls are available to specify a processor, it is usually ignored. The reason for this is that modern operating systems have many processes running, ...
This is in response to a comment about my last post. I expected something revolutionary and significantly better than what was currently on the market. Microsoft consistently does this with other applications. Sql Server is, in my opinion, FAR superior to Oracle and MySql. .net kick’s Java’s behind. Visual Studio is so far ahead of the competition that using anything else is painful. For those of you that live and die by Eclipse, VS 2005 is clearly a superior product. The XBOX 360 is also much better ...
Microsoft is ramping up to launch the contest to end all contests in the next week. The Dream/Build/Play contest has the potential to change a hobbyist developer's life forever. While the contest PALES in comparison to the fine game development contests run by Geeks with Blogs (when are we starting the next one Jeff and John?), it's sure to make you dream big as you imagine a game that you wrote being picked up officially on XBox Live Arcade. I'm officially throwing my hat in the ring on this one. ...
UPDATE (12/17/2007): My blog has moved. This post is now located at: http://jason.whitehorn.ws/2... Currently I am a working on a small XNA project whose solution is composed of 4 projects, a DLL, a Windows Game, a Xbox 360 game, and a level editor. Each projects needs access to my assets (currently just 2d sprites), and has raised the interesting question of how to easily share them between each project. What I had been doing was adding the assets to ...
UPDATE (12/17/2007): My blog has moved. This post is now located at: http://jason.whitehorn.ws/2... I just found a Lisp interpreter for use with XNA. It was created by Jon Watte in C#, and is compatible with both Windows and the Xbox 360. For those who are unfamiliar with Lisp, it is a high-level functional language created by John McCarthy in 1958. Lisp is commonly used by artificial intelligence researchers, and could come in handy for adding in-game AI to your ...
The final day at Codemash was one to remember. The day started off with a keynote from Scott Guthrie on LINQ. A great intro on the power of LINQ, and how it can be used as an OR mapper. Next was a session on letting NHibernate be your data layer, which, after the keynote on LINQ, I wonder if it is necessary to use NHibernate, seems to me that they do similar jobs, but I could be way off base also. The following session I sat in on was about a product called Selenium. It was a really cool and very ...
Recently, a few photos have popped up on the Internet of a very interesting change in Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox 360. From what inside sources say, the next generation of consoles to come out of Redmond will feature a true HDMI port on the back of the newest version, codenamed Zephyr. This HDMI port will give the 360 the much needed capability of true digital 1080p support. Aside from this, further updates include a cooler 65nm processor, and a new 120Gb hard drive. There's no word yet ...

This post is directed toward my direction in my 3D education. My first step started with Managed DirectX 1.1. I read Tom Millers first book, and I read a bunch of articles online for it. I absolutely loved MDX. I started playing with MDX 2.0 when that started coming out, but unfortunately it's been discontinued. However, in it's doom came XNA to bring back the light. XNA is a wonderful step toward bringing game development to the masses. However, it's a step. It has a long ways to go to allow somebody ...
I was at Wal-mart last night and found a Belkin wireless bridge for the xbox 360 for $60. I took it home, set it up on one of my PC's and plugged it into the xbox. Worked like a charm. I'm now online, part of xbox live and have my media center and xbox talking to each other. I absolutely love how you can download demos of games and download other things like movies and themes and stuff. Its not all free, but a lot of it is. The media center integration is going to be very nice too. I highly recommend ...
My wife surprised me with an xbox 360 system (with a HD and headset, very cool). Its been a lot of fun so far playing "Call of Duty 3", especially in 1080i awesomeness. One BIG complaint though: How lame is it that Microsoft didn't include a wireless network adapter in a $400 console. Nintendo's $250 Wii has a wireless adapter built in!!! Now, I have to go out and spend $60-$100 more to get my xbox online. LAME. With that said, I'm still extremely impressed with the system and thankful at the same ...
<disclaimer>I am a MSFT true believer</disclaimer> This post references Scivs a post about his predictions in review. It should be noted that I am a big fan of Scrivs and have been following his writing since he was in grad school. Scrivs, come on. Microsoft failed? This year, Microsoft has launched: XBOX 360, Vista, Office 2007, SharePoint 2007, Exchange 2007, .Net 3.0 (Avalon, Indigo, CardSpaces), Windows Media Player 11, Zune, and who knows what else. You claim that they failed and ...
Most (99%) of my techy blog entries are Microsoft related. Some people say this makes me a Microsoft whore. I never bother arguing the point, because, well... they're right. I am. When XNA was first announced, I was giddy like a school girl. When the first Beta of XNA GSE was released, I jumped right in and started playing. (Didn't get nearly as far as some of my peers, mind you, but I still loved it.) When Beta two was released, I had a HUGE advantage over George and Jason because unlike them, I ...
Remember back in the day when the internet was (relatively) new, and we were all discovering the joys of hand-written web pages (with notepad, no graphical stuff), playing XWing vs. Tie Fighter online in MSN's Zone (I was part of LSF: Last Starfighter League which routinely playing in Weekends of War...that's WoW before it became World of Warcraft), and chatting it up with friends on ICQ (who uses THAT anymore eh?). But now...now the internet is just so...BORING. I mean, its become as routine as ...
With little, to no fan-fare. XNA Game Studio Express 1.0 is now available for download from Microsoft. Eagerly anticipated by the entire XNA community that has been playing with Beta 1 and Beta 2 for months this download was announced by many eager beavers of the community before the post went up from Microsoft. Many people are even now playing games they made on their XBox 360s! So far, I haven't encountered any conversion issues for my existing games and tutorials, but I've only tested a couple ...
I bought myself an Xbox 360 with Gears of War last Thursday and I have completed the game on the easiest level - the game is just superb, some of the scenes are fantastic and I will probably play it again right through without even trying it on the harder level thats how good it is. The graphics are amazing and the game play makes you want to play it all the time. I would recommend this to anyone and will need to start playing it online asap. Anyways I'm off to play Oblivion IV and continue with ...
From on10.net comes a link to some great XBox 360 themed wallpapers for your Zune. Now, if only I could sync my damn Zune with Windows Vista. Rumor has it that internally all the Microsofties have the patch that makes the Zune software Vista compliant, but the rest of us have to wait until, oh yeah, consumer availability of Windows Vista in anothe4 45 days. Come on, wrap it in the "beta" verbiage like everything else and let us download it already!! Zune wallpapers courtesy of 360style.net; a sweet ...

GameTrailers.com has posted two videos that show in-game footage of CoD 3 played on an Xbox 360, PS3 and the Nintendo Wii and the differences are astonishing, I guess that me saying that I need to ask my girlfriend a Xbox 360 for X-mas says it al? The video quality on the Wii is a bummer.

I treated myself to an XBOX 360 as an early Christmas gift this year. I've only got Gears of War so far but I'm really enjoying it! My gamer tag is Northorn.

Anyone have advice on other good 360 games?

After an excellent Thanksgiving, I find myself back on the road. I'm not in Texas at the moment though. I'm currently teaching ASP.NET at the AUM (Auburn University Montgomery) Technacenter. This is a nice town, with a surprising amount of stuff to do. Turns out (according to the folks I spoke to) Montgomery is also one of the top 3 cities in terms of Tech Jobs. Who knew? The trip was nice, my car stereo plays MP3s so I've been listening to the Eragon audiobook before the movie comes out. So far, ...
Dear Freinds, Joe Healy will be in town and he wants to have a get together he calls this gathering A Geek Laager A laager basically means a circle of wagons pulled together for defensive reasons. The phrase originated in high german, and is now obsolete Afrikaans. Dictionary.com has a great definition here :: http://www.devfish.net/Full... . A geek laager is a circling up of developers (aka geeks) for a short period of time. When I'm in a town for a user group or developer ...
Ouch Ooops Sony... http://www.time.com/time/bu... "The Playstation 3 goes on sale in the U.S. today, but I wouldn't recommend buying one, not even for the regular price, which is plenty expensive without the import markup." "Look at what you get. The Playstation 3 is expensive: $500 or $600 bucks, depending on which version you buy, plus $60 for each game. (An Xbox 360 only costs $400 max, and Nintendo's Wii — yep, that name, still funny — is only $250.) For that ...

Hi Folks

I have been trawling through lots of posts and reviewsd and cannot decide what HDTV to go for - I'm keen to buy an HDTV and an xbox 360 and could use some advice/thoughs on what to look out for.

Thanks

These pictures are from last night (Wednesday, November 15, 2006) in Lee's Summit, MO around 9pm in the Best Buy parking lot. Amazing!!!! They have already started. Last time I waited in line was XBox 1.0 and prior to that was Dreamcast, N64, Playstation 2. During this time, you just had to show up at 10pm and get it as midnight. Now if you want one of these devices, you have to camp out in the 30 degree weather for a few nights. For all you crazy folks out there waiting in line, pick me up some ...
I really want to want one of these. I think the device has potential. But it's missing some big things on day one. No podcast support. I'm sure you can rig something up like we've been forced to do in the past with Windows Media Player, but this really should be as nicely integrated as it is in iTunes. No Windows Media Center support. Shows you record from TV will not work on the Zune. I just heard about this one this morning on the CNET podcast. I'm hoping it's not true, and they just didn't set ...

This article describes how to use VLC, an open-source video player, to convert files to WMV format.  I know Windows Media Encoder already does this, but the reviews claim VLC wins in both quality and speed.

Windows PowerShell Scripting Sweepstakes. I think its kinda funny, though, that the first prize teaser in the description of the contest is two "all-expenses paid trips to Redmond, WA to meet the Windows PowerShell team". You know I'm sure I would enjoy meeting you all and everything...but I'd rather just have the Xbox. Unless I can get the xbox AND the trip to Redmond. :) Submit your entry scripts in one (or all) of 12 categories: Active Directory SQL Databases IIS 6.0/7.0 Networking Partner Category: ...
Well things are finally starting to settle down here, although still living with the in-laws, there are plenty of benefits that offset this handsomely - plenty of space, a very nice view, swimming pool, cellar, etc... ;-) (Photos to follow) What is nice is that we now have a landline that works, along with a reasonable ADSL connection, and to this I have attached what's called an Engin Voice Box Series3. Essentially this is a Netgear device as detailed below The engin Voice Box series 3 combines ...
Heartland Developers Conference 2006 in Omaha was a huge success! Joe Olson, Phil Wolfe and everybody else involved did a great job getting everything put together. Day 1: Joe Stagner did the opening keynote on Federated Logic. Basically using data sources that live anywhere on the internet with ASMX web services. He even talked a little bit about GPS and web based mapping solutions. Something that is near and dear to my heart. Next, I went to Dave Donaldson's talk on Power Programming with Attributes. ...
If you're a modder, and maybe even if you aren't, you could be in danger of turning your 360 into a brick, courtesy of Microsoft's latest firmware update on the 360. Tread with caution and read the link below. http://xbox360.qj.net/Is-Mi... For what it's worth, a coworker of mine got the "3 lights of death" on her hubby's xbox 360 immediately upon rebooting after the update finished. Dunno if she was modded, or just had some suspect hardware or if ...
Being a hardcore NFS fan I got a go on this game right on its day of release! though even being a hardcore fan I wouldn't rate this game as a must have but its a nice addition to the series. The best part of the game that really stands out is that Free Roam makes it to the PSP finally. Yes, you can now roam around the city as you could in NFS Underground 2 and Most Wanted. Like NFS Underground all races in Carbon take place after dark. There is a little bit of Most Wanted 5-1-0 also mixed in here ...
First. WOO HOO! Cardinals rule! Now, how did EA Sports screw up my kid and dampen the World Series for me? I can remember exactly where I was when the Cardinals won the 82 World Series. It is a memory I have from my childhood that is burned in. I was sitting in the rec room of our basement at the bar, second seat from the right. It's still vivid today. The furniture, TV, carpet, everything. My dad was not a big baseball fan, but we still watch the World Series together. You never know when your team ...

Well Joe Healy from Microsoft will be coming to our annual Tech night to talk about Cool Features of Vista to our students and parents. Joe will be bringing an XBOX 360 to donate as a doorprize as well. Thanks Joe for participating.
Like a lot of people I eagerly awaited to hear the new announcements from Apple Showtime yesterday. I was busy preparing for a user group meeting so I couldn't catch it live. I have to tell you that no matter how much I love Microsoft software, I lust for Apple hardware. iTunes is okay. I haven't had a chance to test drive the new version 7 yet which is getting some good reviews. And I like that they are leading the charge to add the ability to download movies; even if it does lock you in to their ...
