In keeping with the growing number of Windows Live services that are upgrading to the Wave 2 UI, the Windows Live Gallery is the latest to receive the facelift. Just in case you aren't familiar with Windows Live Gallery, it's the online site where users can personalize their Windows Live experience. The update also adds a new area for Windows Live Events gadgets. The update has also added support for the Microsoft Points system, which is also used by the Zune and Xbox Live. It adds the potential ...
Okay, this is not directly code related. But it is a direct effect of having a job coding. I moved into a house a year and a half ago. It's basement was marginally useful to me. Extra bedroom (me and my wife, not kids left at the nest), carpet (cats and dogs make this a bad thing), in general just a wasted space. Do I decided to change that. To perhaps a space more useful, and what could be more useful a good old fashion Irish pub. First, we knocked out the extra bedroom, ripped up the carpet and ...

I have recently bought myself an XBOX 360 Elite and today bought Live subscription!! I know, I know where have i been for the past couple of years - well, working! :( I have only played PGR4 and been whipped a few times! I have my headset on but to be honest I don't really know what the deal is with that!! I can, every so often here someone clear as day, he appears to be having a conversation with someone but I cant here them?? So, do GWB have any team games/matches? I will be trying out Halo3 and ...

I've been putting this off WAY too long, and I just wanted to say thank you to Microsoft and especially Tim Heuer and the folks out here in the Phoenix office for throwing an AWESOME launch party for Halo 3! It was cool to meet other people and revel in the glory that was deathmatch (especially when CJ was camping the tunnel in Sandtrap with the Gravity Hammer... But hey, camping is a legitimate strategy. Thanks, especially, for the opportunity to win an Xbox 360 Elite ...
Five years ago is when our school had the first Tech Night. It seems like yesterday. Tech night was sponsored by the US Computer Science Department and it was a night to discuss technology. Microsoft has always sponsored the event and sent lots of swag to give out to students and family. An XBOX was donated and given out as a door prize. This year we have scheduled our Tech night for Thursday, January 24th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on our campus in Orlando, FL. The speakers will include: Dan Waters from ...
I have been looking a bit deeper at the blogging side of things and investigating if it's worth getting a bit more serious, as well as having some great ideas about creating a Social Network, so based on this I have run up quite a few virtual Servers and installed DNN (DotNetNuke), Community Server, Movabletype and Wordpress, amongst others, both in Windows and Linux flavours and I have to state that from my pitiful level of Linux knowledge creating a LAMP server is not that easy. LAMP for the uninitiated ...
So after having others in the geek world (like here and here) seemingly throw my pain and sorrow in my face, God sent a messenger to me this morning. That Messenger was someone named Kyle...or Kent...regardless, he brought tidings of great joy to me: "Fear not D'Arcy, for on this day you will receive a new XBox 360 to replace the one you sent in for repair, and it will allow you to play Halo 3 tonight. Just bringeth all cables from the original unit into the local temple (read: Best Buy)." And with ...
OK, so maybe I'm not even picking Halo 3. But I'm wagering that it'll be either that or Bioware's Mass Effect will be the ones that make Game of the Year. I have a theory about games that, much like other software, there's a certain amount of customizability that's necessary, particularly to keep the hardcore cluster intrigued. Games like World of Warcraft demonstrate this in its user interface customizability and (to some extent) the abilities of their classes. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion demonstrated ...
I'll be here: Discover Halo 3 first-hand. We will have several Xboxes setup with Halo 3 for multiplayer play, including the opportunity to play the Halo 3 campaign for the first time. We’ll also have other Xbox 360 games to enjoy, as well as food, drinks, and prizes to give away, including some exclusive Halo 3 branded items. And for those up to the challenge, we will be hosting a tournament pitting the top teams from cities across the US against each other. This is a one-time only event… don’t miss ...
*Moved to: Xbox 360 EliteWohoo, I traded my sometimes crashing Xbox 360 in for an Xbox 360 Elite in Saturday. Over the last two weeks I have been playing Bioshock to death, but the crashing finaly anoyed me enough to get it sorted. I could either have sent my Xbox away to Microsoft to fix for £150 (no ring of death :() or trade it in for £140 with a couple of games that I do not play any more and get an Elite for £105. it was a no brainer...Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...

Dear System Center Team,

Many apologies for leaving you off, but you should check out my letter to the XBox Team per the screenshot below:

Dear XBox Team, I was browsing your accessories site was thinking about how cool the animations were! You do a great job at marketing the XBox products by providing a very media-rich interactive site. Unfortunately, (as shown below in the screenshot), I notice that you are using Flash to provide your users with this experience. You might be unaware of a technology that was released into production on 9/5/2007 called Silverlight that you can use on your site to provide the same experience (other than ...
These all are Scott Guthrie [MSFT]'s announcements. Check them out! Quotes from the announcements post: Silverlight 1.0: Some of its features include: Built-in codec support for playing VC-1 and WMV video, and MP3 and WMA audio within a browser. The VC-1 codec is a big step forward for incorporating media within a web experience - since it supports very efficiently playing high-quality, high definition video in the browser. It is a standards-based media format that is implemented in all HD-DVD and ...
One year ago today I came home from Microsoft Gamefest excited and jazzed about XNA and rushed out and purchased the XNADevelopment.com domain. Today is my sites one year birthday and what an amazing year it has been. I've been involved in official launches, been interviewed by community sites, become a Microsoft MVP for XNA, spoken at my local Code Camp and watched 4 game hobbyists get the opportunity to have their games published on XBox Live Arcade. The time has just flown by and every new twist ...
It looks like I should have sold my Xbox 360 last month?...... bummer ;-) Xbox 360 Premium confirmed shipping with HDMI Posted Aug 8th 2007 5:33PM by Joshua Topolsky Filed under: Gaming It looks like after all the rumor-mongering and speculation, the bomb is in fact dropping on Xbox 360 Premium hopefuls: the game systems are shipping with HDMI. At least one lucky customer who purchased a Premium system at a Target in Atlanta is currently enjoying the spoils of Microsoft's not-so-secret addition, ...
I was watching the Boston Red Sox play the Seattle Mariners at Safeco field in Seattle yesterday and thought it was wierd that the Wii was advertised on the wall behind homeplate. You would think that the XBOX would be heavily advertised seeing that Redmond is only a few miles from the park.
Just an observation....
Before the Zune launched there was one of many rumors floating around about pricing. One of those was a $99 price point. Well, I think it's time to make that a reality. Microsoft says Zune sales are on target. But that target was not that impressive and it's time to start pushing hard. We need a Zune 2. We need podcast and better video support. But mostly we need users. The price drop on the HD-DVD drive on the XBOX has fueled those sales and that was on $20. Drop the retail price on the Zune by ...
This battle continues and isn't that clear who is winning although the smart money is on Blu-ray.... So the US figures: Hardware HD : 300,000 but that is 150,000 dedicated players and 150,000 other half are Xbox add ons. Blu-ray: 1,500,000 but only 100,000 are dedicated players and the rest based on the sale of the PS3. So it appears a win for Blu-ray....but then again all HD sales were a deliberate purchase of a HD player not just because it came with the cames console.... So result not clear. Top-selling ...
This morning dotnetslackers announced me as the winner of the XBox article content for the month of June. Special thanks to everyone who vote my Asp.net Ajax Control Development article. Some of my friends asked me why did I choose to write in dotnetslackers over codeproject when codeproject got 8x more traffic. The reason behind choosing dotnetslackers, I think it got much more Asp.net Ajax specialist as a member comparing to codeproject and once it won the Asp.net Atlas Mashup contest of Asp.net ...
I recently saw a very well put together code walkthrough presentation by Oliver Sturm on how he built a Connect Four network game using WCF and WPF. You can download the entire source code for his application here. If you haven't got a .NET 3 or above IDE then see below to get all the free resources to set this up. I find downloading and installing the Orcas DVD image much quicker than downloading the VPC image which can be very large. The Orcas express DVD image is 849MB (whereas the current VPC ...

I was listening to Scott Hansleman's 70th podcast the other day and it brought back a memory from the MVP summit. It was at one of the Microsoft parties and towards the end of the night (did I mention the drinks were free?), I bumped into Scott Hanselman and had a little conversation with him. I've seen Scott around, being from the same area we attend some of the same geek events like the Portland Code Camp, but this was my first time I ever engaged him in a one on one conversation. It was a blast! ...
It was a unique experience for me to be part of the Imagine Cup, I also congratulate University of Canberra. More details .... source: http://www.apcmag.com/6514/... APC Magazine Report It's not every day that a student programming competition delivers a solution with the power to change some people's lives. The winners of Microsoft Australia’s Imagine Cup have come up with a system that makes it possible for blind people to program in C#. The team, from the University ...
OK, so I am changing bits of my personal challenge slightly. I am going to look beyond the MS certs for some coding ideas and also to hold off on building my own personal website system until I have a much stronger grasp on things that already exist so I don't reinvent the whole wheel. So, modifications to my personal challenge begin now and go here: Books Head First Design Patterns (Currently Reading) {edit} Here is Justice's review of the book. Professional XNA Game Programming for XBox 360 Patterns ...
The Zune and XBox 360 are amazing pieces of hardware and software working together to make an amazing media experience. Recently, I introduced Microsoft IPTV technology into my home and have loved every minute of that experience as well. But now, Microsoft announces the next level of media experience with Surface (every blogger will mention it today). It is definitely the most amazing machine and technology I have ever seen for the home and entertaining industries. I have already been passing my ...
Michael Singer posted an article on Information Week about Microsoft's seeming lack of community (Thanks to Scott for originally posting about the article on GWB). I think that he might have gotten some misinformation from less-than-reliable sources, so I wanted to go through his article and give a Microsoft-ie point of view. Let's review the article shall we? "Apple has one. So does the Java community, Oracle, IBM, and Google. Lord knows anyone who uses Linux or free and open source software is ...
<reposted from my old blog> Ok so it's not the Stanley cup but I know lots of guys who grew up playing their own Stanley cup series outside on a frozen pond, lake, river, tennis court, or other piece of frozen water. I spent the first weekend of February playing in the Miramichi Pond Hockey Tournament in my hometown of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. I played on a team with one of my brothers, a cousin, and another guy I play beer league hockey with and we ended up winning the Competitive ...
I finally put the finishing touches on the course that I'll be teaching next school year on game programming. This will be an 18 week course for students who are experienced at programming and have taken our Honors level Programming course. I plan on using the online book The Art of Computer Game Design by Chris Crawford. The book is a short read but covers some key points such as: What is a Game? Why do People Play Games A Taxonomy of Computer Games The Computer as a Game Technology The Game Design ...
After waiting several months now, I finally got my hands on this new book. The author has a nice blog on game development and he has created a series of videos on game development in directx where he created the rocket commander game. I'm hoping that Benjamin can create the videos on how he created the rocket commander game with XNA. One bonus for this book is that it's not just about coding games using XNA. The author adds input to his own experiences on creating games and emphasizes making a plan ...
The Fight Space Fight Space is a game idea I had for the Houghton Game Jam Spring 2007. The event took place on April 7th from 1:00 PM until April 8th at 1:00 PM. During this time there were 8 entries completed and there were several people that helped out. My Game Since this event was to take place for only a 24 hour period I needed to keep it as simple as possible but still be creative. I failed on both parts. I decided to take my first shot at a full 3D game in a 24 hour period. So my obvious ...
There is always some time left after the AP exam to teach our students more before we leave them for the summer. In Florida, we have a couple of weeks to learn more and if you’re from different parts of the country you may have even more time to teach students something new. I am really sold on having students learn about creating games so that’s what I’ll be doing with my students. There are several options available for you to do with your students and several languages to use as well. If you want ...
In preparation for the gaming course that I'll be teaching next school year, I came across these interesting facts about the industry that is put out by the Entertainment Software Association: TOP 10 INDUSTRY FACTS US computer and video game software sales grew six percent in 2006 to $7.4 billion – almost tripling industry software sales since 1996. Sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games. The average game player is 33 years old and has been playing games ...
Scott Johnson over at the ExtraLife web site linked to this article in Wired, You Grew Up Playing Shoot'em-Up Games. Why Can't Your Kids? I'm a dad of two young boys now, ages 4.5 years and 19 months. I know I've been pretty cautious about letting them watch me play any games on my XBox 360 or on my PC. I normally play once they go to bed because I really don't want them to see me playing Gears of War, Lost Planet, or GRAW. And the one time that my oldest woke up he snuck downstairs and found me ...

Windows Live Messenger is coming to the Xbox 360 on the week of May 7th.  I don't know how useful I will find this, but it's good to see Microsoft continuing to expand the 360 beyond gaming.

I'm putting together a course for my advanced programming students and could use some help. My goal is to teach my students C# and then how to program a windows game and finally an xbox game using 2d. Hopefully, all students can complete their game and then deploy on an xbox. I have 18 weeks to do this. Any input you can give me that would help high school computer science students be successful in this course is appreciated. ps I have looked at a majority of tutorials that are online including a ...
Microsoft just announced the Xbox 360 Elite gaming console. The Elite version has a price tag of $479.99 and includes the following: Xbox 360 Elite console Premium black finish 3 core processors 1080p support, 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio anti-aliasing full surround sound HDMI output DVD playback with upscaling capabilities Xbox 360 120GB hard drive Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black) Xbox 360 headset for Xbox LIVE (black) The Elite package is rumored to be available at the end of April. So no real fiascos today. Some good talks on Ajax from Scott Cate, and WPF from Walt Ritscher. I'm still amazed at how scaled down VSLive is from past years. Last night was the big party night. They had some contests and we giving some prizes away. A few nice things like a portable DVD player from one of the vendors, but the "big prizes" were production licenses of Sharepoint. Woo, hoo, snore. Come on, sure it might be worth 5 grand, but I'll bet nearly every developer there would rather have had ...
Microsoft's Channel 10 has video and answers to the rumors. Video: XBOX 360 elite First look at the Xbox 360 Elite Official Press Release ...
Well, I have not had a lot of time to work on my entry since the first rough draft of the design document was made, but I have made some progress. Basically, I've begun putting together the initial prototype for the game just to see if the gameplay itself is any fun. This is a question I figured might be better to answer now than later. Unfortunately, we still can't answer that question because the gameplay still is not there. What I do have is some of the game elements displaying. I have some randomly ...
I absolutely want to drop my free HD-DVR from Charter for a Vista Media Center with CableCard support. The ability to record to a hub that can be viewed from any Xbox 360, Zune, Portable Media Center, phone, etc is exciting. But... Niveus Media's offering starts at $3199 and that's without the CableCard adapter. It looks like that will run an extra $1500. That's way out of my price range, and I am a gadget freak with a decent income. That thing is built for Bill Gates and friends. Velocity Micro's ...
Alfred Thompson, a former high school computer science teacher and now a Microsoft employee, blogged today on taking a look at AP Computer Science. Quite timely I thought even after I posed this question last week to Microsoft boss Bill Gates, "Is computer science education dead". Quite timely indeed even after I said something to my Associate Director here at school on Friday about how frustrated I am teaching AP Computer Science and that when our school hires another Computer Science Teacher next ...
You might think I'm little behind with this news, believe it or not but until now I was still runing on Windows XP. But no more excuses! This week I want ahead and finally bought Vista for my home computer. To be precise it's Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit version. The fun begins! Why I choose Ultimate edition? The politically correct answer of course is that I use the computer for both work and fun… but hey, the truth, as you all know, is that I'm a geek so I just want the best system I can get! ...
So my xbox 360 is overheating. I call the xbox support line and get to talk to the computer named Max who is really dumb. He's o.k. at first, since all he's asking is do you want your console fixed or is it something else like your billing account, but then when you get to the point of saying what the problem with your xbox is, he's useless. They've got maybe five things he recognizes, but they don't list it until you ask for the list, so I said my problem and he tells me he didn't understand, so ...
By SETH SCHIESEL Reaching out to millions of aspiring game developers around the world, Microsoft plans today to announce a contest that will award $10,000 and the opportunity to entice millions of eyeballs to the next great digital diversion for the company’s Xbox 360. In addition to the game console’s snazzy graphics, the Xbox Live online service has been the most important component of the Xbox 360’s success since its debut in 2005. And perhaps the most popular aspect of Xbox Live has been the ...
The NYC codecamp rocked this year. Thanks to Peter for taking care of all event details. Sessions were good especially Kevin Goff, Bill Wolf, Kurt Guenther, Scott Water and Andrew. The people from Oxygen were great especially the Pair Programming session. And yeah guys thanks for the XBox 360. I never win anything so that was a great feeling...
Now if this was Microsoft shipping an Xbox late without cables everybody would be screaming bloody murder. But since it's "do no wrong" Apple, all I am seeing are a lot of "we understand" style excuses. "We need to give them time to make a great product" or "It's better than shipping crappy cables" type stuff. Don't get me wrong, some people are complaining, they're just not doing it as loudly or are harshly as they would with Microsoft. Any else notice this? That the industry is bent toward being ...
Here is an interesting way to get tabbed browsing on the wii. Navigate to wiiminder.com. The site itself creates tabs to help you navigate. If you point your normal browser there all you will get is a video demonstrating the site. Can't wait to get home and try this. It even includes a better favorites system. But where is the Xbox 360 browser? Could you make one with XNA Game Studio? Would Microsoft block it's release ...
