Big announcement at the GDC in San Francisco today. Microsoft has launched a community driven service that will let amateur creators build and distribute games via XBOX live. I was amazed to find out that XNA had been downloaded 800,000 times and there are more than 400 universities worldwide that are using the package. There are not that many high schools teaching XNA. I'd like to see more XNA training for faculty so that high school teachers would feel comfortable teaching it. Last summer, I took ...
This just might be the best week ever, or at least the best one in a long time... Sunday I watched the new Knight Rider which was a lot of fun. I hope they make it a series. My tablet finally showed up yesterday and its working GREAT. My XBOX 360 has been repaired and is on it's way. (edit: FedEx says it will be here tomorrow.) I just finished tech editing a (IMO) terrific VB 2008 book for O'Reilly. Yesterday I got a nice letter from Microsoft, not just informing me about my MVP status & benefits ...
OH HELL YEAH! If you aren't watching the GDC video... you're missing huge news. 10:56 am PT -- It's changing today. For the first time, community games will be distributed through Xbox Live. 10:57 am PT -- "'Xbox Live Community Games' will give creators a huge audience to share their creativity with. Game distribution will be democritized, allowing the community to control the content. Create, Submit, Peer Review, Play are the four key steps." "We want creativity to flow through this pipeline," says ...
As I mentioned when I pioneered this blog, I work for Terralever, an interactive marketing firm based in Tempe, AZ. I started there following a rather interesting series of events that involved an application to Blizzard. As someone who has read much of my blog will know, a lot of my interest in programming lies in areas outside of web-based programming. I consider my specialties to lie in .NET internals, object-oriented design and analysis, and Windows-based UI design -- these are the areas that ...
This is beyond ridiculous! I have had 3 Xbox 360's fail on me, and that doesn't include the current system which came with a broken face plate. Now the HD-DVD drive is dead. Microsoft's quality control on this system is the worst I have ever experienced. I just spent 30 minutes with support where he kept asking me "Why are you using an external drive? Just put the HD-DVDs in the internal drive." I had to try very hard to convince him that not only would that not work but that Microsoft even makes ...
Over at the creators club site is an online video tutorial entitled Beginner's Guide to XNA Game Studio Express that is new and will teach you how to create a 2d and 3d game. Charles Cox, a Developer Educator from Microsoft does an outstanding job at explaining how to code these two games. In addition, he reviews the hardware and operating system requirements of being able to run XNA Game Studio Express and how to install as well. What I liked was part of the Introduction steps you through how to ...
I wasn't blogging recently as I am organizing Polish edition of European Silverlight Challenge. The contest is organized by INETA Europe in the entire Europe. Project submission has just been extended till February 8th. We already have 7 projects published on the site (see http://poland.silverlightch... I believe it makes us the winners in number of published projects. The entire site is in Polish but I believe you can download all the projects without any problem. ...
It's hard to believe that we started this class a month ago and we are moving along to finish the C# learning before we begin our adventure to learning XNA. Students are programming assignments utilizing the if statement. We reviewed the switch statement and how that is used as well. In addition, we covered webcast 3 overview of Game Elements that Digipen has available. This webcasts covers graphics, input, sounds and networks. My students only have time to program 2d games in XNA but I wanted to ...
So I was surfing Youtube for my latest and greatest music videos when I got the urge to see if anyone had posted some interesting videos on Rockband. Rock Band Drums on the PC. To my suprise I found this dude had put together an app to use your drums that are included with the Rockband game on you pc. This is so cool. I can now play the drums record my session and share it with the world via Youtube or your favorite video site. Another great how to get windows xp to recognize your usb drumset head ...

Here's a blog site with all the latest news on the XBOX 360 Ultimate: XBOX 360 Ultimate blog

Tech night 08 was a great success last night in the Lakefront room at LHPS. There were close to 50 students and parents in attendance to listen to Andrea Barr from Apple who talked about Podcasting. Etan Horowitz from the Orlando Sentinel talked about Tech Tips for students. Richard Connor from Laptop Plus dove into pc security and finally Dan Waters from Microsoft talked about the tablet pc and Onenote software. Lots of information in two hours time. Thanks to Microsoft for the donation of an XBOX ...
I don't normally blast Microsoft as a company, because I happen to like them overall and I know some really terrific people that work there. But I have to say my experience with XBox Support completely sucks. As I mentioned previously, here, my Xbox 360 kicked the bucket. Not in a dramatic 3 red rings kind of way, but in a slow, sad death kind of way... everything gradually turned green. My 360 lasts about 5-10 minutes before it happens... and gets progressively worse as it heats up. So I called ...
At CES in Las Vegas last week, UK incumbent telco, BT, and Microsoft announced a partnership that, starting in mid-2008, will allow BT broadband customers who also own Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming consoles to access BT's Microsoft Mediaroom-powered IPTV service, BT Vision, through the Xbox 360. Existing BT Vision customers, who currently access the service through a proprietary hybrid (DTT/IP) set-top box, will now have the option of also accessing it (minus Freeview DTT channels) through the Microsoft ...
I've only taught my Honors Programming II Game Programming class for 3 days now and I'm evaluating my students C# skills with various beginner programs. In addition, I am introducing Gaming concepts with my students using the free online book called The Art of Computer Game Design by Chris Crawford. I am also using some the Video Gaming Webcast that Microsoft has available with Matthew Mead who is a Computer Science Instructor from Digipen Institute of Technology. The Webcasts does not cover XNA ...
Is anyone else having issues when trying to sign into Zune from the software? It's been hit and miss the last few days and now my son is having the same problem. Here is the most recent message: Can't complete the operation because there is no Internet access. That's not always the message I get. It seems to vary. What I find funny is that right below that message is a link for web help. Could this be related to the XBOX Live Marketplace problems? Update: From zune.net Zune users may experience issues ...

Microsoft announces in LA that BT will be releasing BT Vision on to the XBOX 360!

So today was our first day back to school after our Christmas break. We had meetings in the morning and we get the rest of the day to get ready for the next semester. I have 20 new pc's in my room so I needed to windows update each one along with installing the software for the xbox controller that the students will use in my XNA class. Here's a picture of the lab. I was able to write my lesson plans for each class that I'll be teaching and put the finishing touches on the Honors Programming II class. ...
*Moved to: Xbox Live to Twitter Update (v0.2.3)I have updated the Xbox Live to Twitter application and it works quite well now. There are currently too many updates as you can see from my twitter on the left of my blog . I will hopefully be adding some more customisation functionality to allow "only online" or "only title" changes to propagate. I may try to add some SQL Compact bits so differences in Achievements can be logged, but the data is currently limited...Read more...Follow my new blog on ...
*Moved to: My first Extension method...I decided as part of my .NET 3.5 learning curve to rebuild Duncan Mackenzie's Xbox to Twitter application just for fun... When you call his web service you get a XboxInfo class back that contains all of your Xbox Live Information. I wanted to be able to add a method to this called "ToInstanceString" that I would use to both display your Status, and to detect when it had changed.Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...

Today my xbox 360 bit the dust and has the infamous red ring of death - Its Sunday 6th Jan and I'm going to blog about the experience with Microsoft support and see how my extended 3 year warranty is handled by them.

How long does it normally take to get your xbox back fixed guys?

Here is an outline of the Honors Programming II class that I'll be teaching next semester which begins next week. The curriculum that I'll be using for C# was written by Digipen and Microsoft. Introduction to C# C# Types & Variables C# Input & Output C# Expressions & Operators C# Functions & Flow Control C# Classes C# Arrays C# Structures The curriculum that I'll be using for some of the XNA training will come from Bill Reiss and Blue Rose Games. Introduction to XNA Getting Started ...
*Moved to: Xbox Live To TwitterI had been trying to find an application that provided updates to twitter from my Xbox. There is such an application written by Duncan Mackenzie, but I could not get it to work. I tried everything and ended up decompiling the application to see what was wrong. Well, it seamed that the guts of the application was missing! The source code has all of the UI elements, but none of the bit to do the updates. I tested the web service and it worked, so the only thing to do ...
Since Microsoft's Xbox live network was so slammed during the holidays and people weren't able to connect it appears Microsoft is offering (at some point in the future - details still to come) a free game to those affected by the outages. See the full story on Yahoo. So apparently my daughter wasn't alone in her frustrations with the Webkinz network this holiday as that one appeared heavily slammed too...but sadly for her and all the other kids out there, no free KinzCash for their troubles ...

Microsoft Corp sold 4.3 million Xbox 360 video game consoles in the last three months of 2007, helped by hit titles such as "Halo 3" and "Mass Effect," according to company data released on Thursday.

I bought a new 360 a couple weeks ago. Since then, I've been trying without luck to recover my existing BlogusMaximus account. Every time I go through the process of entering in my Live ID, my email, my password (all via controller or remote, which sucks) and every time it fails. It never fails in exactly the same spot each time, but always says the same message: XBOX Live Signup is not available at this time. A few days ago, I checked the support section of www.xbox360.com and it said they were ...
For over a year now, I've been busy learning XNA and then try to put together some curriculum for my Honors Programming II class to use. 3dbuzz has an excellent online class and. I would highly recommend their training. I am using moodle class management system with my students and it is a very convenient way of organizing a course. I'll be doing weekly blogs on the progress of the course . I am hoping more high school teachers would teach XNA to their students and we all can share games together. ...
So what does the New Year have in store? Well I don't know! There are however some reasonable certainties such as the economic down-turn but one's things for sure unpredictable events will happen. My predictions are going to be nothing more than my personal musings on the state of affairs and not on insider information, so be warned, don't necessarily put money on horses I'm backing. So in no particular order here's what's on my mind ... Microsoft will make huge efforts to bolster Vista Lets be honest, ...
Its Boxing Day and Xbox live is up and down like a woman of the nights knickers.....Not good enuff Microsoft.
Microsoft's repair center sent out the 360 via FedEx just in time. It arrived about 30 minutes ago. I don't expect to see my son immerge from the basement for at least a few hours. I'd like to think that Microsoft rushed as many of these out as possible. That would explain them using FedEx instead of UPS. Whew! Technorati Tags: xbox, christmas ...
Look at the lineup of new content tonight: Duel Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? Don't Forget the Lyrics Clash of the Choirs We got a lot of game shows and reality television to look forward to this winter and spring if this writer's strike continues much longer. We have the best readers on the planet. This is a comment I got from Justin Etheredge in response to my post XBOX 360 Repair Saga - Part 2 - The CSR That Stole Christmas. Hey, where do you live? I would be more than happy to overnight my 360 so you can borrow it. I would hate to see a kid's Christmas ruined because of a broken Xbox 360, and I honestly don't play mine all that much. Send me an e-mail, I'd love to help out. Thanks, again Justin. We decided to buy a second 360. We had been contemplating ...
I called Microsoft's repair center to check up on the status of my repair. The rep told me it was still being processed because they did not receive the XBOX until the 16th. I told her that seemed odd because I sent it 3-day UPS the previous Saturday, the 8th. She told me it was a shipping issue and UPS was probably backed up because of the holidays. So at that point I realized we are not getting back our XBOX before Christmas. I was double checking the timeline to find out how long this process ...
I guess I am an atypical guy in that I don't have a big screen TV, I don't have an XBox (nor a PS3, not any other game console), I don't have a big stereo system, I don't have a recliner, and I don't own a DVR / Tivo. However, I have considered a DVR / Tivo for some time. I get involved in shows and have to miss episodes because I am at a .NET User Group meeting (or a SharePoint User Group, or other professional association) or some such. A few months ago I decided to give online TV a try. And now ...
*Moved to: Festive holiday studying I am sorry to tell you all that I am now (as of Friday past) off for the holiday period. For those of you who have had to return your XBOX 360, please share your experience with me. I havent returned mine yet, but I think I will be soon. Shortly after the most recent update, I started experiencing some really odd graphical problems. Green, and lots of it, starting appearing on my screen. Not just during DVD games, but on XBLA also, and even when I played DVD movies. More and more green on screen. No Red Ring of Death, just lots and lots of green on screen. I am going to wait a little ...
No the world is not ending, well I don't know if it is or isn't, but John and myself switched to MacBook Pros from our Toshibas. These machines are amazing. I have never been so excited to work with Vista. Don't worry, I am not a switcher. While I downloaded Vista Business from MSDN, I used OS X Leopard and I had the same reaction that I did with my original Apple PowerBook, "What can I do?" I was literally bored on a computer and that takes a lot. Those awesome applications they talk about on the ...
The December 20th meeting of the Twin Cities XNA User Group promises to be a good one. We've got the following members presenting some projects they have been working on. Be sure to visit the website and RSVP so we know how many people to expect. Member Projects Justin Chase will show us Drop In, a 1 or 2 player game featuring a simple MinMax algorithm for AI. The object of the game is to get five pucks of your color in a row by dropping pucks into a column and by rotating the game board. Greg Wurm ...

Ok, so hardly any online game works now, the different tabs freeze when you change them and basically playing Call of Duty or Gears last night was almost impossible - Microsoft has fubar'd my xbox and theyll need to patch their patch - grrrr!.

I wanna play COD4 online and I wanna play it nowwwwwwww! <g>

I've been spending time recently enjoying Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed on my Xbox 360, as well as to wonderfully-gorgeous Unreal Tournament 3 on my PC. One thing I've noticed, not only in these games but especially also in ones that are coming out, is the relatively-consistent overuse of High Dynamic Range, a technique for rendering photorealistic (or not, I suppose, in situations where the art requires) scenes with a higher contrast ratio in lighting. (Source: Games Radar, Battlefield: Bad Company) ...
Awesome huh? 4 XBOX 360s. Man what could be better than that! 4 XBOX 360x in 1 house. Hoo, am I bragging. Well, the problem is, we only have one. But this is the third one to die from the Ring of Death in 2 years. I know it's not an overheating problem because we have always stored them on open air racks with plenty of heat escape space. The only way it could be better is if we left it outside. And to make matters worse, we probably won't have it back by Christmas. So now we are faced with buying ...
Crossposted from the VB.NET XNA Project blog at www.ILoveVB.NET First... how to cause the problem. 1. Create a new C# Windows Game 2.0 project in VS2005. If you take a look at this point, in the Configuration Manager, you will see 2 entries. One is for the Content project and the other is for whatever you named your new project. So far, so good. 2. Add a new VB.NET Class Library project to your solution. (Make sure to add it to the solution, not create a new one.) Take a look in the Configuration ...
One thing that comes along with the Zune software upgrade is the ZuneCard (if this was around in the first version, I apologize, they did a damn good job of hiding it.) It's exactly what you think it is, the Zune version of the XBOX LIve GamerCard, only with a little more. It shows your friends, what music you've listened to lately, along with what you've listenend to most. It also give you the ability to buy & send tracks, add comments, send messages, etc. If someone hasn't created a web badge ...
I was recently at a one day BizTalk training given by a solution partner at the Microsoft office in Atlanta. They had a giveaway at the end, as they usually do. I never win these. It's one of those things that I expect to not happen every time I go. Well, this time I won. A free copy of Halo3. Ok, ok...I know...good score, right? Well, I don't have an Xbox 360. Or at least, I didn't own one. I am now the proud owner of a Halo3 edition Xbox360, and the ashamed owner of a psyche that realizes I have ...

Remember that Bond Movie where our trusty spy James played a video game against the villain, in which you were shocked as you lost ground? A bit more violent than a rumble pack.. So the Twin Cities Code Camp III is over... thoughts? I had a great time meeting a lot of the local developer community, including some Magenic and Microsoft folks that I hadn't had an opportunity to hang with before. It was great seeing Bill Ryan, Lou Vega and D'Arcy Lussier again. The four of us, plus a few extra folks (Justin Chase, Aaron Erickson, Michael Dunn) all got together at my house the night before to work on our presentations, have a few beers and jam on Guitar Hero II. Michael brought ...
I'm sitting in on Chris Williams XNA session...looking forward to it. This room has NO projector...but instead, his laptop is hooked up to a connection that broadcasts his screen to all the computers in the room. Cool, but I agree with him: I'm used to seeing a big screen to reference off of too. Chris is showing us a picture of sprites...explaining what sprites are and how they're the main thing you'll work with in a 2D game. Sprites are/can be everything: characters, monsters, items, backgrounds, ...
In keeping with the growing number of Windows Live services that are upgrading to the Wave 2 UI, the Windows Live Gallery is the latest to receive the facelift.
