”FOR THE BELIEVERS, IT'S TIME TO BECOME EVANGELISTS.” YES I DO MEAN TO HAVE CAPS LOCK ON FOR THIS POST, BECAUSE I AM SHOUTING! AN ARTICLE IN THIS WEEK'S INFORMATION WEEK “SPEAK UP FOR THE IT CAREER” REALLY HITS THE NAIL ON THE HEAD ABOUT THE IT PROFESSION. I NORMALLY THUMB THROUGH I.W. AND TOSS IT IN THE TRASH. BUT IN THIS CASE, THEY CAN'T BE MORE RIGHT. THERE IS AN ACCOMPANYING BLOG ON THEIR SITE FOR THIS ARTICLE. Okay, I'll calm down a little bit, but mostly because the ...
This has nothing to do with Dotnet, but games are geekdom at its finest. My favorite game to play on the XBox is the EA Sports NHL series. I have been playing NHL 2005 almost every night for some time now. The other day I noticed that EA had come out with NHL 06. So how do you release a new version of a software package that is dependent on statistics, when there hasn't been a season with statistics since the last version (NHL 2005) due to the strike? And with possible NHL Lockout fan backlash, will ...
Continuing on my posts about contests check out the Race to Linux contest from the guys over at The Code Project. The contest will challenge developers to port existing ASP.NET applications to Linux using their cross-platform tool of choice (Mono, Grasshopper, etc.). The winners get an XBox 360! Break out your bookmarks, the contest starts this coming Monday (September 19th) http://www.codeproject.com/... ...
This article was forwarded to me by an antipodean associate of mine. It seems that the previous game consoles were able to be hacked and modified to bypass copyrights and other things that the consoles were not meant to be used for. One quote I really like is: "There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before." ~ Chris Satchell Now if that is not a challenge to ruin his day and poke a hole in his ego, then I don't know what is. So, you know what ...
IGN team has deciphered a very ingeniously hidden code in a picture of a tree released by Origen Xbox 360. After zooming into the picture, you can see the hidden message written on a tree branch to the very left side and in the bottom. Just visit the Origen Xbox 360 site and zoom in a couple of times on the picture made using Flash, and you will be revealed a hidden message written in Latin. I wonder if Da Vinchi has made a secret picture especially for Xbox :) Visit IGN Xbox 360 for the explaination ...
The new “XBOX Live Experience” that they have been letting us peek at looks like it has a lot of cool new features. In addition to the wireless controllers, the headset cord port is also built into the wireless controller, which is cool... I wonder if anybody's considered BlueTooth for that? Then you could get rid of the headset altogether? I know of at least 3 friends that have a BlueTooth headset for their phone... It would be cool to also be able to use it for Xbox Live... Hell yeah! ...
....if you do (and you are Canadian :-) ) , we want to hear from you. The launch is coming up, and if you are doing 'stuff' with our new 'stuff', we would like to hear about that 'stuff'. Parent Controls on the XBox 360.  Being a parent of 3 children I view this as a welcome from Microsoft.

This news is a couple days old, but I hadn't seen anyone else talking about it, so... Marvel MMO to be on XBox 360 This news is a little older, but still interesting: Sony Online has recently announced that it will be creating a DC Comics-based MMO, targeting a fourth-quarter 2007 release for the PC and unnamed next generation consoles, which would likely not include a Microsoft platform release. Thus, although far away, the stage seems to be set for a Marvel versus DC massively multiplayer game ...
Inside the XBox 360
It's not impossible, but it's probably a lot less likely than most folks realize. Certainly not as simple as downloading an XDK or paying a license fee. Ya know... it's hard to get experience developing for consoles if they expect you to have experience developing for consoles before you can participate in the program. From the Xbox site... Xbox Developer Programs We have created several programs to support the efforts of publishers, developers, tool makers, and hardware vendors who want to bring ...
I am moving on to a new position with a new company! I'll be doing Software Test Engineer for LendingTree.com starting July 11th. My last day at the current job will be the 6th. I am leaving my user group here, one I helped to start. I really hate that. I've some good buddies in that group. Charlotte has some great groups, too (I went to the Charlotte Code Camp this year), but the one here is so "young"... I will be finishing my code for BattleshipNet for the pocket PC, though. At least at first, ...
One of the areas on the main floor is called “Cabana Sessions.” It's a bunch of tables, with one for almost each of all of the current and upcoming server, developer, and platform products. The tables are manned by a total of 500 Microsoft Team experts--these are the people who've worked on these products, or support them. You can walk up to any of them, and ask questions. Many of them have their laptops setup so you can run some code, or see how something works. So--If you have a question ...
Technically, Monday is day 1 of Tech*Ed. That doesn't mean that today (Sunday) wasn't crazy busy though. I spent all day at the INETA User Group Summit. What an incredible experience that was! I learned more about running a user group in one day than I have in 2 years of actually doing it. Before I go into too much detail, I just want to say Julie Lerman and Sara Faatz totally rock! Those two (and so many others) made this day possible. I met so many incredible people today, and learned so much, ...
I caught my plane out of Cincinnati at 1PM today and arrived in Orlando greeted by a thunderstorm. There is nothing like coming in from above the clouds expecting palm trees and sunshine and instead getting dark thunderclouds and pounding rain … and here I thought I might work on my tan too. I made my way to the hotel (I am at the Wyndham) and checked in. I then went over and caught the bus to the OCCC. I haven't been here since the last Tech*Ed. I think the convention is in an entirely different ...
The day started off well. Sara picked me up at home around 11:30 and took me to the airport. Being the AR type, I always try to get there about 2 hours early. As usual, I was glad I did. There aren't many things in this world more entertaining than folks who are running late for a flight, blaming everyone but themselves and trying to take it out on folks who just do not give a damn. I show up two hours early, check in, let them search my checked luggage, get in line... no hurry. Open my backpack, ...

Dana Dill has posted a link to an extremely interesting article on the new XBox architecture here.
(The actual article link is here.)

There's also a mention of XNA and a built-in Media Center Extender! Sounds like some stuff worth getting excited over.

Well, I am home now from E3. What an exhausting trip. I couldn't sleep on the Red Eye coming home so I got about 1 hour sleep in 36. I am more rested up now and ready to head back to work in the morning. Thursday at E3 I spent most of the day on the floor of the Expo. Trying to soak in as much as I could. I finally go to go to the Midway and Atari shows. Midway was terrible but Atari was pretty good. They where giving away the best T-Shirts of the show with the “In the beginning there was PONG” ...
Firstly, don’t get my wrong this isn’t a post about how good or bad the new Xbox 360 is! I do count myself as a bit of a gamer. There is nothing like a good old FPS in my book and my absolute favourite is Half Life 2. I’ll completed Half Life 2 twice and I still want to play it again and drink in all the bits I’ve missed the previous completions. I know that Half Life 2 is coming out for the Xbox, which is good. But I’m not going to buy it. I’m just not in Love ...
Just a tiny little rant here. If you've been following my blog (all 1 of you probably) you probably gathered that I'm one of those hard core gamer types (one of my sons friends even said it to me which is something coming from the 12-13 year old crowd). Anyway, I'm following this years E3 (as I do every year). Simply put, the next gen consoles will just rock. I can't wait to play an XBox 360 game in 1080i and PS3 games at 1080p. Anyway, excitement aside, this is what's really getting to me. When ...

So far I'm seeing “end of 2005” as a tentative release date. With 2005 probably shipping around 3rd quarter, early 4th quarter... I'd be surprised to see XNA by 12/5 but you never know. Here are some links to more info about XNA Studio: This article is from last month: http://www.gamingnexus.com/... is the “official” page from MS: http://www.microsoft.com/xna/A Gamasutra article about XNA: http://www.gamasutra.com/gd... ...
To celebrate the launch of our new next-generation Xbox channel we've decided to put together an Xbox 360 FAQ containing all available information on the console. As we approach the unveiling of the system on MTV and at E3, more details are very likely to become available and this article will be updated accordingly. Note that this FAQ is entirely speculative. As next-to-nothing about the system has been officially announced, it's impossible to say that most any of the information herein is 100% ...
Charlotte Code Camp was a blast!! I met some great people and had a terrific time. My GDI+ talk went very well and I got some great feedback for next time. (Next time, by the way, is Atlanta, GA on May 14th) The Enterprise Developers Guild also presented me with a very cool framed certificate for speaking at CodeCamp. They were a huge part of making the entire event happen, and we could not have done it without them. The other huge part of the event was the support we got from Microsoft. Not only ...

....tough its just said between the lines - but its clear - Need for Speed Most Wanted will be available for XBox Next Gen - NFS Most Wanted is slated for release in November this year!

A new image of Microsoft's Xbox 360 has surfaced on web forums this evening, where it is believed an industry insider leaked the image. Sources we spoke to who have already seen the hardware themselves confirmed that this image - despite being a render rather than a photo - is indeed the official finalised design of Xbox 360. Other scant details have also been revealed to us by our sources. Apparently, as well as removable media for saving games, gamers will be able to save games on to their home ...

I never thought I'd hear myself say those words. Disclaimer: I haven't tried it myself, and I'm sure it's got plenty of flaws. You don't need to tell me about all of them. But hear me out. Real has finally one thing right (being a first for Real since the company's inception, this is a big event): With their newest update to their Rhapsody service, they're supporting multiple codecs, even those made by their competitors. They even have Rhapsody To Go now which supports “janus” Windows ...
Apparently images of the final design of the next xbox have been leaked.  If you want to see the new design check it out here .  A write up about the whole deal can be found here.
I wrote this on the plane, but didn’t get around to posting until now. Take it, Brandon from 2 days ago: Seattle was an absolute blast. I understand 100% why Chris Pirillo decided to move there after the first Search Champs program. I’m writing this now from the jet while we’re about an hour from home. I’m offline, so I won’t be able to link to other Search Champs related posts until I’m home. First, let me tell you a little more about Seattle. As I mentioned in ...
The highly anticipated next version of the Xbox console will be revealed to videogame fanatics, music lovers, and MTV viewers via a high-energy half-hour program titled “MTV Presents: The Next-Generation Xbox Revealed.” The special will be hosted by entertainment icon, seasoned gamer, and Xbox fanatic Elijah Wood, known globally for the Academy Award-winning Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Island Records’ renowned Las Vegas rockers The Killers will deliver electrifying performances ...

LINKS FIXED It looks like there's a new ilovebees type of site, this time it appears to be the beginnings of a viral Xbox 2 campaign. I must say, I'm excited. Ilovebees was a phenomenal success and I was completely engrossed in the lore behind Halo 2 for a long time. In fact, my two favorite game series right now both have deep, rich backstories. One is the Halo series, the other is Asheron's Call. So check it out (Link goes to article at GameSpot) Ourcolony.net ...
I started writing this a while ago. So don’t be surprised when Part 2 shows up real quick after Part 1 ;) So for a long time I’ve wanted a PC in my car. Countless others have done it. In fact, one of my best friends put a modded Xbox in his Camry over a year ago. He got an LCD display and mounted on the top of the dashboard (above the glove compartment), and put the Xbox in the trunk. He loaded it up with music and movies and used Xbox Media Center to give it a friendly UI. So back in ...
Demon Stone (PC version) review I picked up this game for two reasons. First because it's a licensed D&D product, and I'm sorta obsessive that way. Second, because R.A. Salvatore's name was attached to it. This is one of those purchases I'm going to live to regret. For starters, it's an obvious XBOX port. The PC version of the game even makes references to "push the black button" in game. I don't own a joypad for my PC, that's why I have an XBOX. If you try to play this game with a keyboard and mouse ...

Well, most developers are usually gamers as well so I thought this may be relevant for you. If you have an XBOX, you may want to check out the announcement made this morning. Microsoft will replace the XBOX power cords on some 14 100 000 consoles. The number of consoles affected seems to be very small (30 worldwide). Official release is at: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/n... ...
Mike Torres gave his list of 5 problems with MSN Spaces. I think all of those things could use fixing… but I have a list of my own. 1) An API. I want to be able to post entries from Outlook/Newsgator and without having to use the browser (although I do think MSN’s browser editing control is the best I’ve used). 2) Ink support. Maybe this is a bad idea for those of us with awful handwriting J But I would really like to see a posting option for Tablet PC users that uses a simple Ink-enabled ...
The bold and italic part below is the disclaimer. Were you at the San Diego .NET User Group meeting a couple of nights ago? Paul Sherrif (who did an awesome Whidbey presentation) and I gave away TWO, yes *TWO* XBoxes. There was thousands of dollars worth of books and software given away (as usual), and free pizza (as usual), and superb world-class technical content (as usual), but this is the first time we've given away XBoxes. It may not be the last (I didn't win and wouldn't mind another chance ...
After re-reading my previous posts on the subject (mainly this one with its 75 replies), I think some people got the wrong idea. I mentioned Microsoft and how they “semi-promote any player that supports [their technology].” But I wasn’t rooting for anybody, or suggesting that there’s anything wrong with Apple being popular. And I definitely wasn’t talking about ways for Microsoft to take this market away from them. What I want is a better product and a better market. ...
www.dvdsanta.com I’ve used the free trial, and I’m actually going to pay for it. It’s THAT good. I'm a tv junkie and I download lots of TV episodes, because it seems like I’m never around when they’re on. I’ve tried a lot of tools and pretty much given up in total frustration on ever converting my AVI, DIVX and XVID files to a more comfortably viewable format like DVD. After all, VCD isn’t really a great option. With DVD Santa, in 3 clicks (and 4 hours of ...
I meant to add this last week, but I'm a slacker... GC.NUG First Meeting Notes (12/09/2004) As many of you know, we had our first meeting tonight. I'd like to thank all of you who could make it. I had a great time and met some great people. I hope all of you did too. A big thank you to Blackbaud for giving us a place to meet each month.Attendance was good! We had 34 names on the signin sheet, and I know a few more folks slipped in after we got started. I think it was around 37 total. We started things ...

Sometimes it can be the little things. Good job Microsoft on sending over an XBOX and 30 games+ to everyone's ASP.NET friend Steve Smith!

So my girlfriend is the best. She gave me an early Christmas present. I told her I could wait but she said that I need to start using it because in a year it wont be good anymore, so I caved in and opened it. Inside I found and XBOX Halo edition and Halo 2. I know you might be asking yourself how could I already not have a XBOX and the answer is that until recently I was in college and college = poor college student. So I have the best girlfriend ever, I mean she even know when XBOX 2 is supposed ...
I was just listening to the latest tech shorts podcast and found the update on Halo 2 to be a lot like what I have been expereinceing. The voice chat is a bit weird unless you know who you are chatting with and have a good repore with them. Otherwise you can expect a bunch of teenagers talking a lot of trash. Now this may appeal to some of you but I don't think it works for a lot of us. This has been an issue since xbox live was around so I expected it when Halo 2 was released. Other then that you ...
Well, I'm officially addicted to Halo 2 and XBox Live now. I just finished playing a bunch of games online with Scott Hanselman and some others. What a blast. The last game was particularly fun. We were playing “1 Flag CTF” where there is one flag and each team takes turns as defenders and attackers. The map was Zanzibar. Zanzibar is an incredible map. Very fun and very fast passed. It particularly takes pretty good team work if you want to pull of a smooth win. The game was four-on-four ...
I'm on XBox Live now. My gamertag is “bL0wF1sH”. Either post a comment here or add me to your friends list so that I know your gamertag. For you XBox players out there, I am back.  I hooked up my box, grabbed Halo2, and now I am ready to play.
