Problem The SAN data volume has a throughput capacity of 400MB/sec; however my query is still running slow and it is waiting on I/O (PAGEIOLATCH_SH). Windows Performance Monitor shows data volume speed of 4MB/sec. Where is the problem and how can I find the problem? Solution This is another summary of a great article published by R. Meyyappan at www.sqlworkshops.com. In my opinion, this is the first article that highlights and explains with working examples how PREFETCH determines the performance ...
Problem I am trying to understand how SQL Server communicates on the network, because I'm having to tell my networking team what ports to open up on the firewall for an edge web server to communicate back to the SQL Server on the inside. What do I need to know? Solution In order to understand what needs to be opened where, let's first talk briefly about the two main protocols that are in common use today: TCP - Transmission Control Protocol UDP - User Datagram Protocol Both are part of the TCP/IP ...

In my previous post I wrote a simple demo on how to Calculate Totals in GridView and Display it in the Footer. Basically what it does is it calculates the total amount by typing into the TextBox and display the grand total in the footer of the GridView and basically it was a server side implemenation. Many users in the forums are asking how to do the same thing without postbacks and how to calculate both amount and total amount together. In this post I will demonstrate how to do this using JavaScript. ...

Part 1 - Listing Data from Database: Let us now learn ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch by actually developing a front end website for the Chinook database, which is an alternative to the traditional Northwind database. You can get the Chinook database from here. As always the best way to learn something is by working on it and doing something. The Chinook database has the following schema, a quick look will help us implementing the application in a efficient way. Let us first implement a grid view table ...
At the end of November 2010 we released a new version of the Windows Azure SDK which contains many new features driven by the great feedback of early adopters plus a shiny new portal. New Portal implemented in Silverlight: The new portal is implemented using Silverlight and replaces the (IMHO rather clunky) original HTML + JavaScript portal. It is 100% better although does still have a few bugs. Enjoy! P.S. You can if you wish still use the old portal: New runtime functionality: The following functionality ...

Apparently it's hard to locate a free ISO mapper these days.  Like most people I've use Microsoft's Virtual CD ROM to mount ISO images on XP and server 2003 machines.   This will not work in Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines.  Therefore, I recommend people try out magic ISO instead.   It's freeware and can be downloaded from the following URL.

There was a recent upgrade of the Oracle client on a production web server housing serveral app pools each containing multiple web sites. The upgrade consisted of adding the 11.2 client tools on the web server, but leaving the 9.2 and 10.2 versions alone. After learning the upgrade occured, I updated Oracle.DataAccess.dll on my site to the 11.2 dll, and the web site ran smoothly. The next day I discover the site is throwing an error: Oracle.DataAccess.Client.Or... The provider is not compatible ...
I parse/scrape a few web page every now and then and recently ran across an error that stated: "The server committed a protocol violation. Section=ResponseStatusLine". As an example, HTTP header keys should specifically not include any ...
This book is more than just a book about an ASP.NET CMS system - it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. Some links to get you started are: Windows Memcache at http://code.jellycan.com/me... Dot Net Access Library at http://sourceforge.net/proj... ...
Issue: The file upload size on your machine or web app is too small. The default file upload size for IIS is 4096K. The file size the user is trying to add can be retrieved (using the ELMAH log here) by looking at the Content-Length header property: HTTP_CONNECTION:keep-alive HTTP_KEEP_ALIVE:115 HTTP_CONTENT_LENGTH:6414851 In this example it is just over 6Mb Solution: You can add/update the HttpRuntime property in the machine or web config files, depending on at what level you want to set the size. ...
In honor of Phil Factor's recent post on SQL Smells, I thought I would post some blogs SQL smells and why some of them are bad as well as when they may be OK. Let's start with the top of the list that Phil has compiled. Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) There are two problems here. First this is not in compliance with the SQL 92 standard. We should strive our code to be standards compliant whenever there is a standard available. Now this sounds like a cop out along the lines of "Because ...

Setting up a WCF RESTful service is extremely easy to do. In fact, you can do this with no *.svc file and no config file. However, you might run into a situation where your service worked fine during development using the Visual Studio web server but when you deploy to IIS 7.5 it no longer works. Specifically, for a simple request like http://localhost/help you get the error: “HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found. The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily ...

During a recent Exchange 2010 migration, we encountered issues with mail-enabled groups. At first we thought it was a SMTP related issue as no 2010 mailbox could send mail to any of the groups. The mail would just disappear. No NDR was delivered, it wasn’t in the queue, it simply vanished. Because of this issue, we decided to go ahead and convert all the groups to Universal Mail-Enabled groups through the Exchange 2010 EMC. This is when we encountered a really strange error. The groups would not ...
Recently for a customer with a rather large exchange environment, we implemented multiple CAS Arrays across various sites in the network. The customer decided that all external access to OWA would come into once Internet entry point and that Array would proxy OWA request to the other CAS Arrays to retrieve the user mailbox. We found out quickly that this does not work straight off. When you create a new CAS array in PowerShell, it repopulates all the local URLs for the web services, autodiscover, ...

For Web Designers and Developers writing CSS code for elements is so time consuming. That too make changes in SharePoint Stylesheets(CSS) needs more patience. A couple of days ago, I posted the general steps to create a Web Application using Central Administration for WSS 3.0. Now we are back from the past, and moving into SharePoint Foundation 2010. Assumptions made here, you have access to the Central Administration tool, either by remotely accessing the site or by achieving access through RDP to the server. First, we land at the main window for the Central Administration tool. Once there, you will click on the Manage Web Applications on the Application ...
We have gotten the chance to see Microsoft’s recommendations on how to go about providing a reliable virtualization platform to support SQL Server in a Hyper-V environment. While that defines an “ideal” scenario, not all deployments for a virtualized platform happen on Hyper-V, there is a large number of deployments taking place on the VMware platform. And a recent post from Jonathan Kehayias on sqlblogs.com is a great summary of the resources available for making a great implementation possible. ...
Most of the time, I get question from new friends who work in other technologies that "SharePoint is for Content Management/WebSite Creation?". Well, it's common because SharePoint is sucessor of Microsoft Content Management Server (CMS) which dedicatedly used for Web Content Management. SharePoint Portal 2001 predominantly focus on Content Management feature, whereas the later releases came with more features. It's very easy to create Colloboration portal with SharePoint in Minutes where it requires ...
Sandbox solution is a new feature introduced in SharePoint 2010. It's a secured wrapper around webparts and other elements with limitations. There is no thumb rule that every webpart in SharePoint 2010 belongs to Sandbox Solution. But it's recommended to develop webparts with Sandbox solution. It allows administrators to monitor the solutions and control as required. SharePoint Site Collection administrators can view the resource utilization of each solution and can block if it consumes too much ...
Quick tip: if you are having problems with rules in the new Content Organizer Feature of SharePoint 2010, double check that the Content Type your rule is using is based on a Document Content Type. I discovered this when a co-worker was setting up a demo with the Content Organizer. He had selected a Content Type at random and configured his rule. SharePoint allowed him to do this but when documents were added to the drop box library, the rules wouldn’t be applied. So, I set up a demo on my SharePoint ...
Knowing fully we are now in SharePoint Foundation 2010 territory, I am going back in time. There are still questions around how to configure or create a Web Application and then a Site Collection using WSS 3.0. The questions have come up with companies moving to Team Foundation Server 2010 and not having had experience configuring WSS 3.0. And in many cases they have found in being the “go to” person for anything and everything that has to do with the TFS 2010 deployment you have done. Assumptions ...

I’m currently looking after the Xbox and have so far resisted peaking in… but I make no promises! :-) Note that we have gone for zero breaks with the intention of making ...
So, what would seem to be a simple problem, automating the build of an MSI on the TFS build server – using a Microsoft .vdproj setup project type should be a doddle. Add a new build configuration (cunningly called ‘Setup’) ensure it’s building the setup project, create a build configuration to build the ‘Setup’ configuration, and attempt a build! No. Nothing. Works fine locally. Hmmmm Ok, let’s do some quick googling – there appear to be 2 (maybe 3) options: 1. Install VS2010 on the build server ...
