Jim Lynch provides 9 very good reasons not to by an iPhone: Too Expensive Tiny Storage Stylish and Stupid Stuck with AT&T Edge and Not 3G No Flash or Java Support Two Year Contract and $175 Termination Fee No Keyboard Crapfari Instead of Firefox Those are all valid. When you think about the iPhone, what you are getting is a shiny interface, cool factor, a widescreen iPod (arguably the single reason to buy one), and one device instead of two if you are an iPod owner. What Jim forgot is battery ...
I don't plan on buying a copy of Zune for Dummies because I doubt it has much value to someone who already knows how to get videos and podcasts on the device. The rest of the book looks like basic usage instructions. But I also realize I am not the target market for the book. One big problem I have always had when trying to suggest the Zune over the iPod to anyone is ease of use. iTunes is one nice, neat little package where you can get all of your content. If you can point and click and plug an ...
I finished a flash version of my desktop art site, frontlevel.com. The flash version is meant to "look cool", but not be extremely practical. Its got a fairly long load time thanks to some music and the number of pieces of art that load. I did this entirely to better learn flash and what its capable of doing and to attempt to be creative. I've got 67 desktop wallpapers available for download. Some of them are available in wide-screen resolutions and some will fit your Zune as well. Take a look at ...
I bought my first PSP back at the launch. The lack of good titles for several months drove me to want to trade it in. My oldest son liked it, so I gave it to him for his birthday along with a couple of new games. A few months later he also got frustrated with the lack of titles so I bought it back off him so he could get a video iPod. Flash forward two years, my youngest son saved his money for months and used his end of year report card money along with some game trade-ins to buy a used one. The ...
The Zune and XBox 360 are amazing pieces of hardware and software working together to make an amazing media experience. Recently, I introduced Microsoft IPTV technology into my home and have loved every minute of that experience as well. But now, Microsoft announces the next level of media experience with Surface (every blogger will mention it today). It is definitely the most amazing machine and technology I have ever seen for the home and entertaining industries. I have already been passing my ...
Michael Singer posted an article on Information Week about Microsoft's seeming lack of community (Thanks to Scott for originally posting about the article on GWB). I think that he might have gotten some misinformation from less-than-reliable sources, so I wanted to go through his article and give a Microsoft-ie point of view. Let's review the article shall we? "Apple has one. So does the Java community, Oracle, IBM, and Google. Lord knows anyone who uses Linux or free and open source software is ...
Engadget has some rumoring going on that Microsoft has a big Zune announcement today that is probably an "entirely new Zune". At this point I would be happy just to hear that we are finally getting Podcast support. New Zune at Microsoft event on Monday? Update 5/8/2007: I can't find any information on the web today about any announcement other than some new TV commercials that started airing yesterday. So I guess this rumor is a flop. Update 5/9/2007: Okay, so now it looks like some people did get ...
Interesting opinion piece on the Zune Subscription model. Some of the points make sense, but ultimately they fail to mention that the subscription model isn't the ONLY option for Zuners. I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it frustrating that if I want to burn a track I downloaded from the Zune store, I have to pay *again* for burn rights. I say again because I already paid once for my subscription. I realize Zune isn't the only device/service to use this model, but that doesn't make it any less ...
Having moved away from an IPod to a Zune for my portable music source and having also discovered the joys of the Itunes US store for TV shows - downloading all the latest shows to my IPod for viewing I sort of hit a strange state of needing both. Now the interesting point here is that I live in the UK and yet I'm still able to download from the US store! (For info on that little trick go to Using US ITunes store in UK) The content I download is various TV shows - Lost, Heros, Jericho, 24 - and of ...
Zune 2.0 and a smaller flash based Zune will be sold this year. The hard drive version looks like the generation 1 Zune, but is thinner. It has a larger hard drive and still uses the doubleshot. The flash based player is video capable and he said the screen covers about 75% of the front, similar to the hard drive Zune. The flash player has Wi-Fi and also uses a double shot. Both devices have completed the design phase, although some last minute minor tweaks to the hardware will occur. Memory capacity ...

I think a person's start menu says a lot about them. So show us your start menu! It's a simple Ctrl+Alt+Print Screen. Work Running Windows XP, the company is not overall aggressive about adopting the new OS even though we are a software company. Not running a standard skin (that's the Zune skin). Using IE, not Firefox. Must be a company thing? Windows Live Writer is the top program. I post once or twice a day from work during downtime, but I don't leave the application open. Visual Studio, Notepad ...
As mentioned before, by myself and others, the new Zune firmware update is today. A few things... 1. as of about 10AM PST, it's out there. Grab it. 2. updating your firmware can be scary. My Zune didnt take the update well the first time I tried it. I had to disconnect, reconnect and then retry. (I got a nice little "update failed" message in the Zune software.) The second try went a lot better, although... I had a couple scares along the way. The device rebooted about 4 times, which is no big deal. ...
How to moves files back and forth from your Zune I was getting irritated this morning with some of the limitations of my Zune device and came across this great blog. I found it very helpful for moving and backing up my media files. What I'm referring to is a registry hack. Very simple and works great. Here's the original blog url by Adam Pash (http://www.lifehacker.com/... Here the registry hack Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and ...

The fix list:

  • Skipping in Zune Marketplace files
  • Lockups and crashes
  • FM radio battery drain

Zune Insider

I recently received a review copy of this e-book, and as someone who not only owns but enjoys his zune, I was pretty stoked to read it and see if there was anything I didn't already know about. There was, but more on that in a bit. Eight Great Ways to Get the Most From Your Zune is part of the O'Reilly Shortcuts series. The material is concise, nicely organized and ultimately very helpful. I picked up a couple tips here and there. In fact, I would give this book a glowing recommendation to any Zune ...

I mentioned here that the new Zune firmware update would be today (Tuesday, 3/30/07) but I spoke too zune...

so... ETA on the firmware update is now: soon. It's being tested and all that, which is good.

Please hurry, but not too much.

New Zune Firmware update should be tomorrow, 3/20/07 http://zuneinsider.com/arch... This firmware addresses pretty much the ONLY complaint I ever had about my Zune, so I'm pretty stoked. Future firmware updates will most likely focus on additional features, so that's even MORE awesome. Way to go Zune guys ...

I have formatted the Battlestar Galactica desktop wallpapers found on the Sci-Fi site for Zune wallpaper (240 x 320).  You can download them from Zune Styles.

I am in the market for an MP3 player and need some advice on which one to go for!! The driving force behind getting one is for use down the gym, running etc. I was looking at the Creative Zen Nano (too many bad reviews about the iPod Nano!) but then I found the MS Zune with a million more features but it's bigger and obviously more expensive but when you consider the extra features it worth it. Has anyone taken their Zune running? Is it to big and heavy to strap to my arm/waist?!? Anyone got any ...
The transmitter I use to listen to my Zune in the car is an old one that came with my XM radio years ago. It works fairly well, but when I get close to another car on the highway transmitting on the same frequency the signal goes to crap. If your having the same problem this hack will show you how to modify the transmitter and boost the strength. While it applies specifically to the Zune FM transmitter, the lessons learned could be applied to most FM transmitters. Warning: I'm not sure how legal ...

Here is a new Zune community site: Zune Styles.  Right now it is pretty much just wallpapers.  But they are collecting:

  • Contribution by Zune Styles users. Includes homemade Zune themes, backgrounds, styles, mods, etc.
  • Collection of various Zune modifications out on the Internet.
  • Collection of wallpapers for your Zune!
Today I got my brand new Zune MP3 player which I did win at a Microsoft Event. Lucky me ;-). Ok install the software and you are ready to rockn roll, I thought, and I was wrong. Very wrong. At 94% of the installation it did stop with an error which was there even after a reboot. A quick Google search did confirm that other users had this problem also. One of the possible installation problems was the the Users group has the wrong name. Aha! I have a German Windows XP where the Users group is named ...

any recommendations?

There are some videos I downloaded from Microsoft (in WMV format), and I'd like to play them on my Zune, but the Zune Software says it can't convert them to put on the Zune. (Oh the irony...)

So I did some searching, but didnt find anything I felt comfortable putting on my new laptop, so... I'm asking you.

Do YOU have a program you can recommend to convert the videos, pre-Zune, to a format Zune can use?

Zune Boards has released some new software called zSkin that will change the look of the Zune software.  In honor of Valentines Day they have started with pink, but expect to see more skins soon.

I've been using Soapbox for a while, but now it is available to everyone.  Hopefully the content will spike.

I'm looking forward to some APIs and better Zune integration.

The "You Had Me at EHLO" blog is running a contest for the most excellent Exchange 2007 limerick. Grand prize is a Microsoft Zune engraved with the Exchange 2007 logo and catchphrase ...

I stumbled upon this beauty of a song. If you are a sci-fi fan, it's a must hear. You can download the MP3 for free from Sunspot's website. You just can't go wrong with lyrics like this: Ziggy said there's a 98% chance of a broken heart. Scott Bakula never played Drakula, laid down the smackula, on the bad guys. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. If I ever run into another Zune user, I know what song they're getting :) ...
If you're like me and you have a Zune Pass (I know there are at least a few of you out there) you probably have spent more than a few hours building your library. I finally have all the artists that I own CDs for downloaded so I can get all the songs I like without buying more CDs. I also re-downloaded all my MP3s in Zune format just to keep things simple and have complete tags and album art. Now I spend time checking the home page to see what's new and also pick an artist I already have to check ...
I know, I know, too many Apple posts the last couple of days. If you haven't seen this yet, it's a letter posted on Apple's site from Steve Jobs talking about music. He doesn't do this very often so it's getting a lot of attention. It's primarily in response to the building anti-trust issues with Apple's dominance in the digital music market, which is misguided since the real problem are the music companies. To break it down: Apple won't license it's DRM because it will be cracked and the crack can't ...
I made a tongue-in-cheek comment about why I don't switch to Mac OS X on a recent post to which Jeff Julian made a comment that got me thinking. What would it take to get you to switch to Apple? For me it would take a two-punch combo: Visual Studio for the Mac or an equally good development environment for Ruby on Rails. (I mostly do web development.) A music and video subscription model to iTunes. If I could get that, I would seriously consider trading in my laptop, Zune and Xbox for a MacBook, ...
Dear Microsoft, I understand that you are trying to go for a unified interface for the Zune just like iTunes. But would it kill you to add support for TV shows recorded by Windows Media Center so we don't have to do things like this? In the short term: Please add .dvr-ms support in the next minor Zune software update. It's not that hard and I'm not asking for anything special. Just have them show up under videos. In the long term: Please add a TV section to compliment Music, Videos, Podcasts (you ...
I use an Agent18 protective case for my Zune because I hate scratches. But the case itself gets scratched up very easily. I got into the case habit when I use to have an iPod, but I never needed one for my Creative Zen. So my question is, does anyone have problems with scratches on their Zune? Or can anyone recommend a better scratch proof case? I was thinking of trying the new Griffin case ...
After prolonged use of the device, their opinion has improved. First off, we have to say that the subscription service is great. Actually listening to songs on the Zune has been fine as well. Even compared to the iPod at three months, the Zune keeps charge longer when not in use. It's only one large scratch instead of millions of tiny scratches like on the iPod, so we'll say that the Zune really is a bit more sturdy. Playing back video has also been great. There were a couple of negatives, such as ...
I've been using a plug-in for IE for about a month that saves YouTube and Google videos as Zune compatible Windows Media Video files in your video directory with a single click. It has a few bugs, sometimes videos do not save correctly, but it's a great add-on for archiving online videos and carrying them around on your Zune. Download YouTube Google Video downloader for Zune ...

This forum post tells you where to get your pre-loaded content from if you removed it from your device.  Personally, I think that this should be a simple download from the Zune Marketplace.

$25 for the centerstage Zune case is acceptable.  It even includes free ground shipping.  Just don't try to get it 2nd Day Air :)

I got home at 2AM.[from my g/f's house - no partying for me these days, at career turning point and a new semester just started]Discovered my Zune Masters Welcome Kit has arrived. Now it's 4:49AM. This thing really beats any iPOD or media player I have player around with in a while. I am extremely impressed. Charing up the battery, more tomorrow. NOTE: Yes, I have signed up for Zune Masters program and have qualified to represent Zune on my campus, with one or two more of "me". This was not any mysterious ...

Dear Microsoft,

Please send me a free Zune. As a married man with children I cannot afford to buy one; the wife simply refuses to entertain the idea. Furthermore, since I am an :uber-geek C# programmer, I would like to be able to show the iPodders in my office just how cool the Zune is.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Jeff

I got a Zune for Christmas, from my employer. Here are a few reasons I hate it. #5 - It's really cool looking, and people keep wanting to touch it. #4 - It holds WAY more music than I can possibly listen to. I've downloaded everything in sight and it's still not full. #3 - My Zune Pass gives me way too many choices. There's so much stuff on there I just can't download it all fast enough. #2 - The video screen is so big, when I'm travelling, other people keep looking at it to see what I'm watching. ...

Vista's looking more and more like a supported operating system!!

First Zune folks release their Vista update; Virtual PC 2007 RC is now ready.

Well... I'm betting some of you know some of them, but chances are none of you knew all of them until now. (I was tagged by Jason Olson, btw.) #1. I didn't finish High School or College. Not really a big story here. I was a bit of a screwup in High School and ended up dropping out after my 2nd or 3rd pass through the 11th grade. Certainly not stupid, just lazy and unmotivated. I putzed around in community college for a year or so and then decided I would roadie for a band that's no longer around. ...
Even though the support wizards at Zune told me it wasn't compatible, I had a hunch it had more to do with me trying to install the previous version of ZuneSetup (the one that wasn't Windows Vista compatible) than the version of Vista I was using. Sure enough, in the comments and through my own confirmation I found this to be false. I re-imaged my laptop with a fresh install of Windows Vista Enterprise and ZuneSetup 1.2.5511.0 installed like a champ. My only complaint now is that I cannot authenticate ...
As I posted yesterday, Zune finally released its Windows Vista compatible client. I had called Zune support two times previously and had gotten credible support. However, this was terrible. After gleefully downloading the new update, I would launch ZuneSetup and then I would be told "No Zune Software Updates Available." I rebooted, tried it a couple of times again, always getting the same result. I am running Windows Vista RTM Enterprise edition. After totally stumping the level one technician who ...
From Zune Insider: Today (Tuesday the 19th of December) we’re issuing a 22 MB update to make Zune compatible with Windows Vista. The update also improves the Zune software installation process, addressing the issues that some of the known issues users reported. Like Jason R said recently “It is plumbing stuff, but it is stuff customers will notice and appreciate.” So you should install the update, even if you’re not running Vista. Get it here Previously posted at blog.Solidsoft.com ...
The Zune team has finally released a version of the software and marketplace that is officially compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista. I have not installed it yet so I cannot vouch for the performance but I will have it in place tonight and will let you know if any glitches turn up. Read more about it at the Zune blog here ...
I'm ranting a lot today, must be the holidays! Last night I had the pleasure of talking to the worst trained technical CSR ever. And he worked for Microsoft. If you want to skip the whole story just read the two sentences in bold. The problem was with my Zune. Over the weekend it stopped syncing. I went to the Zune site and tried every solution on the site until I got to the last (re-install the Zune software) which worked. The only problem I had was that I lost my play counts which I use to filter ...
<disclaimer>I am a MSFT true believer</disclaimer> This post references Scivs a post about his predictions in review. It should be noted that I am a big fan of Scrivs and have been following his writing since he was in grad school. Scrivs, come on. Microsoft failed? This year, Microsoft has launched: XBOX 360, Vista, Office 2007, SharePoint 2007, Exchange 2007, .Net 3.0 (Avalon, Indigo, CardSpaces), Windows Media Player 11, Zune, and who knows what else. You claim that they failed and ...
