As many of you probably already know, the new Zune software (and firmware) update is now available. I'm not posting a link at this time because over the last few hours I have seen several twitters indicating that the update is bricking Zune80s. I do not know if it is having a similar effect on Zune30s but I am currently advising folks to NOT perform the update for a few days, just to be on the safe side. I realize this is not happening to everyone, but it's better to be safe than sorry. (Honestly, ...
Dan Waters , Academic Relations Manager from Microsoft Corporation, took the time out of his busy schedule to drive to Orlando today to speak to my XNA Programming Students about the new XNA Game Development Framework 3.0 that enables you to program games for the ZUNE. My students have been learning C# and XNA for this semester and are finishing up on their game development. Dan had the opportunity to answer student questions on Game State and he viewed the students games and made comments on each ...
I decided to clean off my Zune and resync the files with my computer. I do this from time to time as my Zune seems to keep albums on it that I don't have on my host. When clicked sync now, I received the following issues. And each item shows this message I have been listening to this album for a few months now on a regular rotation. In my high school/college years I was really big into the band Superdrag. I have however started listening to Christian music for the past 6 months and I recently found ...
First of all - a huge thanks to all those folks in Atlanta who pull this thing together each year. They really do put on a good event in Atlanta and I look forward to it (almost to the point of bugging Jim via e-mail) each year. This was actually my 2nd code camp where I didn't speak...though I did have some slide decks ready in case there were some last minute cancellations. I actually missed a chance to speak since I was helping Bill move furniture while Jim was looking for me to cover a session. ...
My wife and I were talking by phone while I was at a store when she mentioned that she wanted an MP3 player for use around the house. Easy in-car use was also a requirement. I went to the music player display case to see what was offered. A full 80% of the boxes were various flavors of iPods. The rest were Zunes with a couple of Samsung units. Since I have a bad opinion of Apple DRM and iTunes lock-in, I bought her a 4GB pink Zune and brought it home. My wife loved opening the box and playing with ...
Usually when I am getting my code on I am going to listen to some high energy music. Ray J Flo Rida Freeway DJ Khaled Rise Against Rage Against the Machine Static X NERD A Day to Remember However when I am doing 'work' I tend to take a more mellow approach. Last thing I need is to send an email to my boss why listening to 'Smack My Bitch Up' ;) Matt Nasi Clapton Queen 311 Ben Harper Black Eyed Peas For the music holic in me the Zune Pass has been awesome. Now that I have mac'd out I am not to sure ...
I have a ton of video from the keynote. However it is all grainy and well even Microsoft expressions is have a hard time with it. So I will try to get some better pictures. A couple of great apps that have been discovered: cetwit- windows mobile twitter application feedslide - One click application for turning rss feeds into jpegs for zune or ipod. Images from the Luxor. Had to add Yesterdays lunch. Yes I twitter. Maybe too much. Technorati Tags: Mix08,MIX,mikedopp.com,micr... technologies,silverlight,si... ...
Hidden Zune API?

Read this for more details...  I'm too busy to fully digest this right now, but I'll be back.

Thanks to fellow Magenic Consultant Justin Chase for passing this along.
For those of you that know me offline, you already know most of this story. For those of you that don't, let me catch you up. For the past several months (basically since November 2007), I have been pulling double duty as Daddy and Mommy and living a life filled with more than a tad of stress and worry. You see my wife was pregnant with our fourth boy and was put on bed rest around that time. That's typically done with pregnant women when there's a risk and danger of the baby being delivered too ...
So once again I am 24 hours late on the news here. Bill Reiss yesterday told me of these news: You will soon be able to develop games for Zunes with XNA Studio! I think is sooo cool. What's the possibilities? BillR and I talked briefly about some crazy ideas playing an extension of a bigger popular game like some puzzle solving away from the XBOX. I was then thinking a of possibly carrying your "avatar" with you on the Zune to show off to friends and possibly find new players if they have the app ...
OH HELL YEAH! If you aren't watching the GDC video... you're missing huge news. 10:56 am PT -- It's changing today. For the first time, community games will be distributed through Xbox Live. 10:57 am PT -- "'Xbox Live Community Games' will give creators a huge audience to share their creativity with. Game distribution will be democritized, allowing the community to control the content. Create, Submit, Peer Review, Play are the four key steps." "We want creativity to flow through this pipeline," says ...
Jesse Liberty takes a few shots at answering some SL2.0 questions, at least with things he's At Liberty™ to talk about -- I liked that, Jesse!, and Michael Scherotter sent me a link to a while bunch of stuff: Zune Video Podcast series on Journaling, his page turn code that is slightly different from the others, and a Typeface he is making available for Silverlight. From SilverlightCream.com, where we now have 501 entries in the database! Tip of the Day: How To Answer: Will This Work In Silverlight ...
My husband and I use Netflix for our movie rentals. The unlimited streaming has become a favorite at our house. Being technical, we have a lot of machines. We have our machines at work and the ones at home and I finally got myself a new laptop over the weekend. I went to watch a streaming video from Netflix and before the show popped up I got a message saying that 8 machines had been used to watch streaming video and to please call customer service to confirm my account wasn't being used by unauthorized ...
I was pondering late last night how can I get along with the new Zune software. No more name calling and bashing the moderators at Zune.net forums. I needed to be a responsible Zunian(no I am not an alien. Just of Zune citizenship) and do more investigating. Here is how the XML is laid out for both the Windows media playlist file and the Zune Media Playlist file. Here is what I found: Windows Media Playlist or WPL <?wpl version="1.0"?> <smil> <head> <meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft ...
Amazon has Sony on board and with that the fourth and final major player has finally gone to MP3. Which leaves me with a decision to make. Now that I don't need to buy DRM music and I don't need to buy entire CDs just to get 1 song, should I drop my Zune Pass and just start spending the money to build my collection? I only have about 150 songs in my entire Zune library that I have marked as "I Like It". So, in a little over a year I would be caught up. And that doesn't include the music I have on ...
Is anyone else having issues when trying to sign into Zune from the software? It's been hit and miss the last few days and now my son is having the same problem. Here is the most recent message: Can't complete the operation because there is no Internet access. That's not always the message I get. It seems to vary. What I find funny is that right below that message is a link for web help. Could this be related to the XBOX Live Marketplace problems? Update: From zune.net Zune users may experience issues ...
I got one of the first Zune players when it came out. There were things that I liked/disliked about it. The worse thing about it was the software that it came with. It was clunky and not to practical so I really didn't end up using it that often. Though, with that said, Microsoft recently released the new 2.0 version of the Zune software which was basically a complete new software package. With the new software and the changes to the firmware that was made to the Zune player along with the client ...
(click to larger view) Oh Zune, I want to love you, but you make it so difficult some times. Well most of the time my Zune is great. The device is solid (now that my battery isn't draining even when I turn it off with the firmware from 2 days ago) and the marketplace has a great selection. The podcast features are getting there (it would be nice to mark as played from the device) but I have been having some major problems for the past few days. When I got my MacBook Pro, one of the first applications ...
For those of you who have had to return your XBOX 360, please share your experience with me. I havent returned mine yet, but I think I will be soon. Shortly after the most recent update, I started experiencing some really odd graphical problems. Green, and lots of it, starting appearing on my screen. Not just during DVD games, but on XBLA also, and even when I played DVD movies. More and more green on screen. No Red Ring of Death, just lots and lots of green on screen. I am going to wait a little ...
No the world is not ending, well I don't know if it is or isn't, but John and myself switched to MacBook Pros from our Toshibas. These machines are amazing. I have never been so excited to work with Vista. Don't worry, I am not a switcher. While I downloaded Vista Business from MSDN, I used OS X Leopard and I had the same reaction that I did with my original Apple PowerBook, "What can I do?" I was literally bored on a computer and that takes a lot. Those awesome applications they talk about on the ...
So I am happily using the new Zune software, ... um sorta ... and I have just decided to move all of my files to a new external hard drive. Well it lost a few in the process (lame) and in the old Media Player software if it errored on such a thing it would let you go find the file again. Nice right. Yeah, not so nice on the Zune software. Here is there help page for the topic. http://www.microsoft.com/re... ...
Sooooooo....my first blog. My first post on my first blog...God help you, world, you can now just throw away the sleeping pills, Dave has arrived. I don't have a style (like I ever did, either in any of my writings or in anything else I ever did in life), but I expect this blog to at times be long and tedious with random fits of lengthy paragraphs and a fair amount of mis-spellings. So go on, avert your eyes now, you've been forewarned. And who can tell what the subjects will be and how often posts ...
It's a short story with a crappy ending (so far) Man buys super special Halo 3 Edition Zune. Zune Breaks. Man sends in super special Halo 3 Edition Zune for repair. Man receives fixed (though beat up) plain old Zune, NOT super special Halo 3 Edition Zune. Man contacts Zune support. Zune supports tells man "Too Bad, So Sad." Man pissed, Man blogs. Show him some support at his blog: http://geekswithblogs.net/F... And if you work for Microsoft, make his day (and his ...
I saw the other day that zune had released the new "Zune nano 8GB" type version...perfect for me as I only want a small MP3 player for the gym...looking deeper into it - downloading music/podcasts to the zune from Zune Marketplace i discovered this and how shite it is too... Microsoft are you kidding...I'm in the UK! Stick with my iPod and iTunes then, stuff ya. Technorati Tags: Zune 8GB ...
No official word from Microsoft on the Zune power drain issue, but there are a few workarounds floating about the net to tide you over. The first one is mostly common sense. Turn off your Zune when you aren't going to be using it. (Remember brave Zunelanders, this is a workaround, not a cure.) Doing a full power off at night will help your battery survive longer. The second one is a little less obvious. Let your Zune drain all the way down to dead. Charge it up completely and then do a Hard Reboot. ...
Rut row... I'm hearing lots of complaints from formerly happy Zune users that say the new firmware update royally screwed their battery life. Stuff like a fully charged Zune (40 or 80) at night being completely drained by morning. Perhaps a hibernation issue? I'm not experiencing the problem at all (yet?) but if YOU are, I'd like to hear about it. So drop me a comment. Microsoft would too, by the way, so drop them a comment over there and be heard ...
In all honesty, I listen to more podcast content than music some weeks. I had mTorrent pull the podcasts, Zune would watch the folder, and suck them in as music. Then I had to find them. What's the artist? Too many thumb clicks. NOW it just knows. I've subscribed (like other feed aggregators/clients) and it shows up on the Zune under Podcasts not Music. Selecting a podcast will display the description. You can resume from where you left off. And, the software and the Zune talk so the software can ...
One thing that comes along with the Zune software upgrade is the ZuneCard (if this was around in the first version, I apologize, they did a damn good job of hiding it.) It's exactly what you think it is, the Zune version of the XBOX LIve GamerCard, only with a little more. It shows your friends, what music you've listened to lately, along with what you've listenend to most. It also give you the ability to buy & send tracks, add comments, send messages, etc. If someone hasn't created a web badge ...
I had talked myself into buying one of the new Microsoft Zune 80 media players. It just so happens I'm in the Detroit area this week and figured I'd try to find one since they were launching during my trip. Well, nobody has them. I've seen the 4 and 8GB models, but not the 80. I tried a few stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. At Best Buy they told me you had to order it online, they didn't get them in the store. The online store says they are backordered. The folks at Circuit City were even less ...
Access your Zune30 as a extra hd. Source: Phaleux.com I highly recommend backing up these registry values before modifying anything. If you don’t know how to do that, I don’t recommend that you even attempt this right now =) 1. Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running 2. open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedt32 and hit “OK” 3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\C... 4. Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. ...
Just stumble onto this while reading the CNET review of the new Zunes. CompUSA is selling the Zune 80 for $1,113.07. Take that iPod Touch. And Amazon.com and Target.com are sold out ...
Just a friendly reminder to plug in your Zunes today and get the latest and greatest in Zune software. If you don't have a Zune, today you can go get one of the 2nd generation Zunes at your local retailer and join the fun. Technorati tags: Zune ...
The Zune 2.0 will be available tomorrow, as well as the upgraded software for the original Zune 1.0 and the new Zune software. One of the coolest things for the new Zunes is the option to get free laser engraved artwork and custom text on the back of the Zune. Check out the details at Zune Insider and Cool Hunting. Lots of other cool info at Zune Insider ...
OK so this is hot. We have wireless capability with the Zune, but that was limited to sharing songs with other Zunes. The new Zunes will allow for wireless sync (when plugged into a power source, dock, etc.). Even more importantly, unlike those option-backdating Apple whores, they aren't sticking it to the little guy. I.e. you don't have to buy a new one to take advantage of this feature. It comes as a firmware upgrade delivered through the Zune software. The new Zunes feature a $149 4Gig flash model. ...
This annoying little message began when I installed Zune onto my new Vista box. The trouble is that when I plug in the Zune device, this nasty little modal dialog box pops up and you can't close it. It renders the Zune software useless. So, I've spent some time on the phone with the Zune help desk, but not enough to solve this problem. However, a workaround I've discovered is to open another modal dialog (like Options>Open File...) and then plug in the Zune Device. By the way, I was listening ...
It's time for another complaint post. Yippee!! First, let me say that the Vongo service itself really isn't bad. I wish it worked with the Zune but it doesn't. The only reason I am canceling is because the client doesn't work for me. I may join again if they fix it. I just upgraded to the latest version of the Vongo software and it doesn't run on 64 bit Vista. Not a big surprise but the old client did. I can't find a way to downgrade, but it wouldn't matter much because this looks like a mandatory ...
In keeping with the growing number of Windows Live services that are upgrading to the Wave 2 UI, the Windows Live Gallery is the latest to receive the facelift. Just in case you aren't familiar with Windows Live Gallery, it's the online site where users can personalize their Windows Live experience. The update also adds a new area for Windows Live Events gadgets. The update has also added support for the Microsoft Points system, which is also used by the Zune and Xbox Live. It adds the potential ...
Woot just keeps pushing the floor price.  Today they are $79 refurbished.  And only in brown, but that's still better than white.

Join the Mayor's Welfare Zune Fund today!

So how do we turn that steaming pile of brown Zunes into a steaming pile of cash? How do we make America fall in love with brown?
Today was day one at HDC. I've spoken to about 300 people so far today. Most of my morning went something like this: good mornin, good mornin, how are you, hello, good mornin, good mornin. hi. howdy. good mornin. hello. hi there. no its pronounce Ma-gen-ic, yeah, there's no T there. nope. just magenic. good mornin. yep. hi. mornin. sure I can draw a smily face instead. good mornin. thanks. mornin. nope, rockys not here... mornin. mornin. no i dont know where rocky is today. mornin. mornin. yeah I ...
The price isn't permanent, but you can get the brown Zune from Buy.com for $99.
I can't believe what I'm reading. Microsoft announced yesterday the details on the new Zune 2.0 hardware, features and supporting software. There are some good things coming...but...and I don't unsderstand why...they have missed the boat...again. WHY CAN'T I DOWNLOAD MUSIC FROM ZUNE MARKETPLACE OVER WIFI? WHY CAN'T I GET REAL VIDEO FROM ZUNE MARKETPLACE AND NOT JUST MUSIC VIDEOS? I don't get it. I don't understand. I love my zune. I use it every day for at least 3 hours a day (Work, Gym). I really ...
Pulled from Engadget We love a good non-mystery around here, and Microsoft's new Zunes are about as un-mysterious as they get. But we also love a good product refresh, and now that the cat's officially out of the bag we can really dig into the new Zunes, which definitely have a lot going for them. There's plenty to cover, so here's what you need to know. Hard drive Zunes It's called the Zune 80 and, shockingly enough, it has 80GB of storage. Uses the new Zune Pad -- four way touch-sensitive d-pad ...
Here is a video of the new Zune interface. This one is a little more generic, showing off the hardware, accessories and the new marketplace. Source: http://www.iwantapinkzune.c... ...
I'm not going to rehash all the details, but the Zune 2 is on the way and all features are being backported to the first generation models. THANK YOU MICROSOFT! Personally my favorite features announced so far are podcast support and native support for h.264 and mpeg4 which is basically every podcast on the planet. (With the exception of you few losers using solely Quicktime MOV format.) I haven't seen any details on the user interface changes or the software changes. Hopefully video will be on equal ...
The Zune rumors and speculation is starting up again. Ars Technica has discovered a patent filed by Microsoft that will push content directly to your Zune based on your personal preferences and playlists. This sort of reminds me of the Tivo Suggestions feature. The patent also discusses the ability to subscribe to other peoples playlists. That would make it much easier for my wife and I to decide which Zune to use. Right now she has a playlist setup on my Zune so she doesn't have to listen to "all ...
So imagine Microsoft releases a new patch for Windows Media Player. You install it and now you have the Zune software. How many people do you think would be pissed about that? When I setup my desktop last week I didn't install iTunes because I don't really have a need for it. But I did install QuickTime and Apple Software Update. This morning Apple software update kicked in and wants to install iTunes + QuickTime to patch iTunes which doesn't exist on my computer. So I thought I would let it update ...
Before the Zune launched there was one of many rumors floating around about pricing. One of those was a $99 price point. Well, I think it's time to make that a reality. Microsoft says Zune sales are on target. But that target was not that impressive and it's time to start pushing hard. We need a Zune 2. We need podcast and better video support. But mostly we need users. The price drop on the HD-DVD drive on the XBOX has fueled those sales and that was on $20. Drop the retail price on the Zune by ...
Ok, I got tagged by my buddy Bill. So here are some things I'd hate to do without in life: 1. My laptop. It's a Gateway Tablet, with 2gig of RAM, heavy as hell and it runs hot enough to fry an egg (until I got my laptop cooler, ahhh sweet relief!) It's also got my entire life on it. Oh sure, I still have my ginormous tower in my office, with my 26" flat panel and I just never use it. Everything I do is on my laptop and it goes everywhere with me. 2. DirecTiVO. I would be so completely screwed without ...
