A week ago I got a new phone. This was planned, and yet not planned. Getting a new phone working is disruptive, and I didn’t want that disruption on Thanksgiving week. However, Verizon somehow de-provisioned my old phone from its data network and told me it would take 5 days to fix the problem. That meant being without mobile email access, liekly for a week, so I reasoned that getting a new phone would be actually less disruptive than fixing the old one. So I deactivated my Moto Q9m Windows Mobile ...
I’m very excited to see some progress and buzz at Tampa Code Camp since we announced. We are still accepting speaker submissions and we are working having more sessions now. Continue spreading the word in person, online and even in general public too! We can still use your help to reach out to your fellow geeks and let them know about Windows Phone Camp, you never know who is not admitting to be a fan. Don’t believe the hype? At the very least come out and learn about what’s new for yourself. We ...
StarterKits for Silverlight and the Expression Tools Lately I’ve seen some tweets passing by with links to various StarterKits. I’ve decided to "Bing” around a little and find out what these people were talking about. There are quite a few StarterKits available on various topics. I’ve listed a few below, old and new ones, that I find relevant to my fields of interest: Silverlight and the Expression Blend, Design and Web. Building a Zune Website with Expression Blend 3 StarterKit In this lab you will ...
Yes, few know that Zune software is free for download, can play music/videos from your system with super clarity all with or without you owning a Zune !!! Its just amazing experience for me, as to the clarity when I play the same song using Zune as against any other software (which includes windows media player, real player etc.,) Clearly Zune is ahead of its times in terms of the clarity, mixing et all. While having a Zune can help you take this music with you wherever you go, its super cool even ...
Surface is cool. There’s no doubt about that. People who walk up to the machine and start using it are usually impressed by it. That also goes for developers: they are sometimes even overwhelmed by it and start to wonder how hard it is to develop software for this platform. The good news is, is that it is actually fairly easy to build software for the Surface platform. Well, easy… if you know how to develop in WPF that is. In this post I will outline the most common steps to take to develop your ...
Just a quick post to talk about the Smart DJ feature in the latest release (Version: 4.0.740.0) of the Zune software. There are several web sites that read from a database of music-listening user preferences, and display music maps based on an artist or song (music-map.com, for one). Zune has taken that one step further with their Smart DJ feature, which allows you to select an artist, album, or a song, and have the Smart DJ create a playlist based on similar songs, artists, genres, or whatever black ...
Microsoft has released extensions to the XNA Game Studio 3.1 for the Zune HD. The add-on will allow you to take advantage of the Touch APIs and the new Accelerometer. Included in the download are documentation and examples on how to leverage the new APIs.Note: Cross posted from KodefuGuru. Permalink ...
As I wrote a couple of days ago, my wife and I got a pair of Kindle 2 book readers. While she started fresh, I had a little work to move my book content over to the new unit. When I ordered the two new Kindles, they showed up under my Amazon account as my 2nd and 3rd Kindles. Once the units arrived, we enjoyed our out-of-box experience, which was on par with the excellent Zune packaging. The Kindle took recycling to a new high since essentially everything but the cling wrap, the protective cover ...
Have you ever been downloading a large file using IE and had to keep tabbing back to the download window to check on status? Well one of the things added to the TaskBar as a feature Icon in Windows 7 is download progress! I was downloading the Zune software this morning and watched the progress happen right there on the task bar. Very cool. One less thing I have to tab to in order to check status. This is also true for windows explorer views as well ...
I had an interesting revelation last week that came to mind just now when I cranked up my Zune. All the way through High School in the early 60s and college in the late 60s I could NOT listen to music while studying. Leave that for when I get out in the working world and find myself in a 'ballroom' of people in little boxes called cubicles. On this contract it's possibly the worst-case scenario because I'm in a small room, facing into a hard wall. The wall echoes and it's like being in a fishbowl. ...
Last week, i.e. in a single week, Microsoft was on real tear: the company announced a release date for Windows 7, disclosed details of Zune HD and Zune’s integration into Xbox Live, discussed Project Natal and other coming improvements to Xbox, and launched its Bing “decision” engine. And all this week, at a special software design review (SDR) event, Microsoft is introducing major new business intelligence features coming in SQL Server 2008 R2, including its project Gemini product that helps rogue ...
After my last article about the Nike+iPod dying and the poor support I received from Apple I decided to try and fix it myself instead of spending $30 to mail it back to Apple just to replace a $2 battery. So here's my attempt at how to replace the Nike+iPod battery. Because of the size and number of these images I decided to host them elsewhere. I cut it open with a dremel, but the sensor is really tight inside of the plastic case so it's impossible to cut around the plastic without accidently touching ...
Microsoft just recently made some announcements that they will be releasing the new Zune HD. The new Zune HD will also support the now much loved multi-touch capabilities that has made the ITouch and the IPhone as famous as they are. From the image above you can see that the new Zune HD is going for an advanced look with the beveled edges. I owned a Zune first generation and then I bought myself a Zune (120GB version) later. I really did like it mainly because of the very large screen that I could ...
Dear clueless fools who stumble upon my blog as a result of Google searches, I do NOT work for Microsoft. You may occasionally see the Microsoft logo on my site. If you look closely, you'll see it's always part of a larger design. It does NOT mean I work for Microsoft. I can not fix your xbox 360, no matter if it's the RROD or otherwise. (I realize this is because my blog is the FIRST hit for "xbox 360 return process" but come on people... look around.) I can not help you if you bricked your Zune. ...
Zune Game Development Using XNA 3.0 by Dan Waters will be released on March 23rd. Here's the product description: XNA 3.0 brings you the ability to create games that will run not just on the PC and Xbox 360, but also on the Zune mobile device. While creating games for Zune is, in many ways, similar to working on the other platforms, it also presents its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Smaller screens, limited storage, and less processing power all affect the way you need to think ...
OK. When the …\User Agent\Post Platform key (explained in the prior post) has too many items and the total length exceeds 260 characters, what happens is the javascript function windows.navigator.userAgent reports back as MSIE 6.0. As follows – using the http://www.fiddlertool.com/... test page: With a HTTP_USER_AGENT string exceeding 260 characters: getComponentVersion says you are running Internet Explorer 7,0,6001,18000. window.navigator.userAgent: [Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0)] window.navigator.appMinorVe... ...
Recently, installed a bunch of new Windows Live components such as Messenger, etc. That update extended my HTTP_USER_AGENT string to beyond 260 characters, which unfortunately IE then, when asked via javascript, reports itself back as IE 6 – this causes the Modal dialog boxes in SharePoint for things like adding web parts to zones to report a message that “Not enough storage is available to complete this operation”. So, since this is an x64 machine, I need to trim down the string which is taken from ...
This is one of these silly things that I keep forgetting, so allow me to quickly jot it down so that I know where to look next time. The issue is: How can you fill your mobile player with a random choice of music, when it is too small to fit all your collection. In my case, I use my new Nokia E71 phone as an occasional player for music. It is nice because it has integrated Bluetooth, and I have a Bluetooth stereo headset, so you can leave the phone in your pocket and listen wirelessly. In addition, ...

If you can’t be bothered reading the details – simply use this? :-) Because the Windows 7 Beta will be offered download-only, it will be provided to you as an ISO image (an .iso file) that you download. more details below And just in case you are interested in the Keynote at CES from Steve Ballmer regarding the release of Windows 7 Windows 7 Home Page As of today, I am running the Windows 7 Beta on several different PCs including my laptop, my work PC, and my PC at home, which I upgraded recently ...
Well, wifey called me (and the world) to task, so I figured I should step up. I'll admit, I was being one of the debbie downers reflecting on everything that I didn't get done this past year. So, well here it is, some reflections on things that I did well and accomplished in 2008. It' all about the family and I made sure I focused on that. My wife and I had a great year. I mean, a REALLY REALLY REALLY good year. Our relationship has never felt stronger (and well, I feel we've been pretty strong from ...

There is an "official" word from the Zune Product Team that we should just wait until tommorrow AND let the battery die.  Then all will be right with our Zune 30GB devices.

Amazingly, they seemed surprised that "a large number of which are still actively being used."  Huh, it is an expensive electronic device, of course we are still using them.

Followup:  It worked.  The two Zunes here are working again.

In this issue: Laurent Bugnion, Jeff Paries, Robby Ingebretsen, and Damon Payne. Shoutout: If you have a 30G Zune and you haven't turned it on today, don't (for now) as reported by Guy Barrette : Zune Y2K9. From SilverlightCream.com: New Year's Greetings and Silverlight Greeting Card Laurent Bugnion sent me the link to this earlier today, and wow... what a bunch of work... very cool slideshow, Laurent... awesome pictures and remembrances! Seattle Waterfront 1907-2002 Jeff Paries has a cool post up ...
UPDATE – DON’T DO THIS FIX AS IT WORKED FOR ONLY A SHORT WHILE. IT RETURNED BACK TO THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE. YOU CAN DO THIS TO TURN YOUR ZUNE OFF FOR THOSE THAT ARE REPORTING HEATING PROBLEMS, ETC. UPDATE 2 – It seems this update will work if you want to use your Zune for a short while. It has to do with the clock on the Zune it seems. You can do this and it will work, but once you plug it into charge in your computer – it will fail again. UPDATE 3 – Microsoft has posted their fix: http://www.zune.net/en-us/s... ...
It seems that at 2am last night, most (if not all) 30GB Zune players became a brick! I use my Zune a lot and this is rather disturbing to tell you the truth. My Zune only shows the Zune logo and the progress bar at full and will not respond to any kind of button presses. I can’t even turn the dang thing off --- so I’m probably doing a good job of burning that image into the screen of the player till the batteries run out. Here are some announcements from others on this matter: CruchGear TechRadar ...
Today Doug came in with his Zune 30 and said, “Look at my screen, this is where it has been for 30 minutes.” I was shocked cause I had never seen that before, then I looked down at mine to find it synced with the exact same screen. So my question for Microsoft is “Why?”. Doug came back to the office a few minutes later saying the Zune boards are going crazy with this happening. I have my Zune 4gb right next to it and it is still working so this must be a Zune 30 only issue, but I can not completely ...
There will be an all day SharePoint Event called SharePoint Saturday on Saturday, January 10th from 8 am to 6:30 pm at the ATC in Virginia Beach. If you wish to volunteer as a speaker or just want to sign up to attend the event go to http://www.sharepointsaturd... I'm already signed up to present on Cheap and Easy Wildcard Search. As most SharePoint Nation! Events it should be awesome. According to the site if you attend you have the chance to win a Zune or a Mindsharp Training Course. So as ...
With XBox Live Community Games (XBLCG) going live soon, I've been thinking a lot about things that are going to help all of us be successful. One of those things is encouraging hobbyist and independent developers looking to get their game out to the public to consider the quality of the game. Flooding XBLCG with a lot of poorly implemented games missing most of the polish that regular XBox Live Arcade (XBLA) titles have will quickly sink our ship. Microsoft has already made some effort encouraging ...
So a few months ago I broke down and purchased a new-to-me vehicle. The process of obtaining a new car was quite humerous (if it were happening to someone else). So here is the car buying summary and the car. Summary I originally set out to get a used BMW 530i. Well, several of my friends suggested I look into other cars. This irritated me, of course, because I had made a decision. One of my friends suggested I look at the Lincoln. That conversation went something like this: Friend - "You should ...
I should preface this by saying I spent a fair amount of time working in the TorqueX Platformer Starter Kit (PSK) when it first came out (back in the XNA 2.0 days.) I think it's great that Microsoft included this in the XNA 3.0 release (especially for the bargain price of FREE) and I certainly want to encourage them to continue doing this sort of thing, but I have to be honest and say that I'm not quite as impressed with this as I am/was with the TorqueX PSK. Of course Garage Games support of TorqueX ...
** WARNING: You can not mount this via VESA out of the box like the announcements describe, a special part must be ordered ** Now that I have my warning out of the way, Michelle purchased a HP TouchSmart IQ816 for the house so we could hang it on the wall so we could easily interact with the machine to leave notes, add calendar events, review pictures, and watch Blue-ray movies. I have to coolest wife, I know… The machine arrived yesterday and man is it big. I would see why you would not want to ...
Thursday, November 6th, 2008. 5PM-7PM Sign Up Now What's this XNA thing I keep hearing about? We'll go through some demos and take a look at some code, identifying key aspects ...
Came across this today and it's on my Xmas wish list (or is that the pre-Xmas list). The Xbox 360 fanboy web site had a posting about the GoW2 branded Zune that is coming out on November 7th (The GoW2 launch date for those that didn't know). Engadget has a posting with some images while the Zune Insider talks about the price and who will be offering it. Nice to see that the deal is available in Canada as well. Now Amazon.ca, the Source.cs, FutureShop.ca, and BestBuy.ca are all suppose to carry this ...
In this issue: Jesse Liberty, Denislav Savkov, Shawn Wildermuth, Gerard Leblanc, and Jonas Follesø. From SilverlightCream.com: Data Binding – Data Conversion Jesse Liberty has a very nice post on Data Conversion in DataBinding ... timely for me since I was just looking at that last night :) ... good job on this, Jesse! The ComboBox control in Silverlight 2 RC0 Denislav Savkov continues the control excursion in RC0 by tackling the Combobox this time in the complete manner that we've grown accustomed ...
Well now you do! I found the Microsoft Student Experience site and on it was HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba products. The prices are discounted for students as well. In addition, you can find software, ZUNE, books, games, and storage devices. For some reason, someone didn't get the message about Frontpage being replaced by Expression Web because there's a link to it with training material being sold that is six years old. Technorati Tags: Microsoft, students, tablets, notebooks, ZUNE, Frontpage, Expression ...
Marc is still driving since Sioux Falls, I’ll take over at the Wyoming border coming up in 163 miles. Long straight roads, very nice today 25C, sunny and Eric Clapton blasting from the Zune / car stereo, but i can only imagine what it must be like in the dead of winter with arctic storms blasting in from the north across the plains. There is some clue in this with all the road construction. For dozens of miles at a stretch they are totally replacing the lanes or removing and replacing concrete sections ...
So, I saw a post this morning that let me know the Zune 3.0 release had occurred. I dutifully started my Zune software and tried to sign in. After accepting the new license agreement, the Zune software recognized that an update was available and politely asked if I wanted to upgrade. Yes. Downloading... And then this: Ok, so I'm running Windows Server 2008 as my desktop, so what? Am I to be punished because I need to run server products on a daily basis and using a VM to do so is a pain? Now I have ...
I took some time today to update the source code for my Cops and Robbers game demo for the XNA 2.0 framework. While I was at it, I ported it to the XBox 360 as well. I had begun to the port to the Zune when I discovered that some of the XNA API calls I was using for the PC and 360 weren't available for the Zune! Mainly no ResolveBackBuffer method for the GraphicsDevice object. Total bummer. I'll have to see if I can figure out another way to do the things I'm doing to achieve the motion blur. The ...
I took some time today to update the source code for my little color key collision detection sample, "The Road Not Taken". I haven't gotten the tutorial updated just yet, but the source code has been converted to work with the XNA 3.0 CTP Framework. (hopefully the 3.0 framework comes out soon and I can get it working with that as well). I also took the time to make the sample work on the Zune AND the 360. The 360 project had to be done in the XNA 2.0 framework since the 3.0 CTP doesn't support 360 ...

Ok so I did a little research and I found that the new version of iTunes pushed the MobileMe client to my Vista PC.  I like Apple products, however I think if Apple keeps these tactics up of pushing unwanted software through iTunes (which we are forced to use by Apple in order to use their MP3 players), I will have to buy a new MP3 player, and stop using Apple products.  Microsoft please hit the mark with Zune 3.

So I got behind on Battlestar Galactica. Then I decided since I am going to Toronto on business I will treat myself to a Zune and I will buy Season 4 of BSG from Zune Marketplace. This will give me something to do on the planes and in the airports. That was a big success. I was all caught-up and stuff except for the final episode which I watched yesterday. Wow. I can't speak negatively enough about the ending. The pace for the season was strange. The Lee Adama story was strange and, given the timing, ...
I finally broke-down and bought a Zune 80GB Black. The form factor is good. The button is almost as good as the click-wheel. I also bought Battlestar Galactica Season 4 (as I have missed most of it). It turns out to be about $2.00 US per episode which isn't bad at all...especially for no commercials. I am traveling to Canada on business this week and thought it might be nice to catch-up on BSG while in flight. I struggled for a long time regarding which media player to purchase (iPod, Zune, Sansa, ...
The fourth meeting of PAXNAUG was this past Wednesday. I intended to give an introductory overview of developing games for the Zune but things didn't go quite as planned... We did a much better job of advertising for this meeting and the turnout was great. As 6:30 rolled around, people were still trickling in and we all sat around socializing and chowing down on pizza. With all the newcomers we decided to go around and have everyone introduce themselves and just give a little bit of what they were ...
All of a sudden I couldn't sync my Zune anymore on my Windows XP computer. I would always get an error that there was an error on the installation of the hardware when I plugged the Zune into the USB port. The actual error I would get was: There was a problem installing this hardware "zune" I tried all sorts of "fixes" including installing the Zune software update and uninstalling the Zune drivers, but nothing seemed to be working. There were folks on the Internet saying that I should format the ...
So I decided to mount my Zune 8GB mp3 player in my car, since I have 74 miles of commute per day. I found that being that I had chosen the 8GB Zune, there were no real holders I could find that fit that player. After some research I found Proclip, they had two great features, 1, it's custom to your car, meaning no suction cups, and they are also custom to your device. It's a 2 piece system as shown here: The mount I chose the center mount one of two made for the Mitsubishi Lancer: I then Chose the ...
So the XNA forums are down for a bit of "reconstruction" I just thought I'd do a post to let people know there's no need to panic. The excellent support and help they get via the forums will be available again momentarily. The real question though is what am I going to do with this reasonably large chunk of free time I'm going to have available now that I don't need to troll the forums every minute of the day? I think I need to start posting some of the projects I've been working on recently. The ...

As many of you probably already know, the new Zune software (and firmware) update is now available. I'm not posting a link at this time because over the last few hours I have seen several twitters indicating that the update is bricking Zune80s. I do not know if it is having a similar effect on Zune30s but I am currently advising folks to NOT perform the update for a few days, just to be on the safe side. I realize this is not happening to everyone, but it's better to be safe than sorry. (Honestly, ...
Dan Waters , Academic Relations Manager from Microsoft Corporation, took the time out of his busy schedule to drive to Orlando today to speak to my XNA Programming Students about the new XNA Game Development Framework 3.0 that enables you to program games for the ZUNE. My students have been learning C# and XNA for this semester and are finishing up on their game development. Dan had the opportunity to answer student questions on Game State and he viewed the students games and made comments on each ...
