Well, Saturday was my presentation on Programming with Windows Azure, and it went well. Everything worked as I had wanted and I got to everything that I had planned. I did not even need my emergency backup filler. I only hope that the folks who attended got something from it. As for the whole conference, I think it was a resounding success. There were a LOT of good sessions to attend and people to meet. I had a great time, and I look forward to next year with great anticipation. Kudos to all (Lee, ...

Much has been talked about the F12 developer toolbar in IE and the support it provides for web developers. Starting IE8, the Developer Toolbar is a menu item that helps you view the page source, scripts, profiling and many other details of the rendered page. It even allows script debugging from within and that makes it a truly powerful web developer tool bar. With IE9, the developer toolbar got even better with the Networking Tab that allows you to inspect the traffic/time taken and drill down into ...

I was at the Jazoon 2011 in Zurich (Switzerland). It was a really cool event and it had many top notch speaker not only from the Microsoft universe. One of the most interesting talks was from Don Syme with the title: F# Today/F# Tomorrow. He did show how to use F# scripting to browse through open databases/, OData Web Services, Sharepoint, …interactively. It looked really easy with the help of F# Type Providers which is the next big language feature in a future F# version. The object returned by ...
Quick tip: you can’t include a backslash in the name of the SharePoint 2010 Content Type. In fact, there are several illegal characters: \ / : * ? " # % < > { } | ~ & , two consecutive periods (..), or special characters such as a tab. What, you didn’t know that after entering one of these characters in the name? Is it because you saw this screen: Oh, that’s right….you need to turn off custom errors in the layouts folder…See this blog post for details and you’ll also need to turn off for ...
Microsoft has revealed some things about Windows 8, and revealed a part of the developer story for new Windows 8 “tailored,” “immersive” applications. In retrospect, very little was shared. The bit that was revealed to us is that those applications can be developed using a combination of HTML 5 and JavaScript. Not much else was said, except that additional details would be revealed at Microsoft’s //Build/ conference in Anaheim, California in September. This has left a lot of people in suspense, and ...

I’ve been playing with the Kinect SDK Beta for the past few days and have noticed a few projects on CodePlex worth checking out. I decided to blog about them to help spread awareness. If you want to learn more about Kinect SDK then you check out my”Busy Developer’s Guide to the Kinect SDK Beta”. Let’s get started: KinectContrib is a set of VS2010 Templates that will help you get started building a Kinect project very quickly. Once you have it installed you will have the option to select the following ...
The Membership API came in .NET 2.0 and was a huge enhancement in building web applications with users, managing roles, permissions etc., The Membership API by default uses SQL Express and until Visual Studio 2008, it was available only through the ASP.NET Configuration manager screen (Website – ASP.NET Configuration) or (Project – ASP.NET Configuration) and for every application, one has to manually visit this place to start using the Security and other settings. Upon doing that the default SQL ...
I’m starting to see a whole bunch of tweets and blog posts on how Silverlight/WPF is dead, or how the XAML team has been disbanded at Microsoft, or how someone predicted Silverlight would die, blah blah blah. They all have a similar ring to it though: “Told ya so!” “They were stupid ideas anyway!” “Serves Microsoft right, boy are they dumb!” Let me tell you something, all those that are gleefully raving about Silverlight/WPF’s demise are nothing more than death trolls. Let’s assume that everything ...
When restoring a database backup, by default, SQL Server places the database files in the master database file directory. In this example, that location is in L:\MSSQL10.CHTL\MSSQL\DATA as shown by the issuance of sp_helpfile Hence, the restored files for the database CHTL_L2_DB are in the same directory Per SQL Server best practices, the log file should be on its own disk drive so that the database and log file can operate in a sequential manner and perform optimally. The steps to move the log file ...
Introduction In the second part of my “Game-changing Features” series, I investigated how to create multiple windows in a trusted Silverlight 5 application. Now, it is time to explore another set of features: SoundEffect Class for Low-Latency, Supporting Double- and Triple-Mouse Clicks and Linked Text Containers. I scheduled a task to perform a windows backup of a single disk on the my server. When I tested it, the task ran successfully – no problems, no errors; just as I expected. However, when the task ran as scheduled, it failed with error value 2147943645. I wondered was this the answer to life, the universe and everything in it? No. That is 42. After doing some research and reviewing the task configuration, I realize that the task will only run if the user of logged on: So, this was the answer!! I have ...
One of the things that is keeping us busy is the Web Camps we are delivering across 5 cities. The topics that we cover include Visual Studio 2010 SP1, SQL CE, ASP.NET MVC & HTML5. Whenever I talk about SQL CE, the immediate response is that, people are wow that Microsoft has shipped a FREE compact edition database, which is an embedded ...
Most of us have seen the Windows 8 news regarding support for native HTML5/JavaScript applications. The press has pushed this as a potential threat to the .NET developer community because JavaScript and HTML5 were called "our new developer platform". The press release refers to "Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.".Microsoft has also been hush on details related to these comments. Before we buy the hype and start worrying ...

I have had the chance to talk at many conferences these past few years, and came up with a way to prepare them which works really well for me. Most importantly, it would make it quite easy to overcome an emergency (for example if my laptop would suddenly lose data). The whole code as well as the slides and other documents are in the cloud. I also use source control for my demos, so that I always have the latest and the greatest, but also a history of changes I made to my demos. Finally I have a system ...

Hopefully nothing. But if you have to do more than simple XCopy deployment and you need to support updates, upgrades and perhaps side by side scenarios there is no way around MSI. You can create Msi files with a Visual Studio Setup project which is severely limited or you can use the Windows Installer Toolset. I cannot talk about WIX with my German colleagues because WIX has a very special meaning. It is funny to always use the long name when I talk about deployment possibilities. Alternatively you ...

Since the demo of Windows 8 given by Microsoft Vice President Julie Larson-Green at the recent D9 conference windows developers have been described in many articles as feeling "Horrified" "Worried" "Deeply Concerned". Why? From the demo it seems that the new Window’s 8 ‘immersive’ applications will be based on HTML5 and JavaScript – which means for experienced win devs who have invested years in learning windows development platforms, they will now have to ‘re-train’ if they want to create these ...
I have seen the rx demos by Bart De Smet and was blown away by the potential that I think they hold – however I just haven’t had time up till now to have a look at them in any depth. Today I finally set some time aside and got a 10 000 foot view of them. So my plan is for the next few days to develop an application in WPF that makes use of reactive extensions as a dummy project… Today I just wanted to get the basics working, and after going through an very good lab on rx was able to get a very basic ...

I wrote a post last August with details about what materials I used in order to study for the two Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Administration Exams (70-667 & 70-668) : http://kellydjones.com/arch... This question still comes up a lot, so I thought I’d post an update with some more learning materials. First, I’ve recently discovered Safari books online. Safari books online has a lot of SharePoint books, including Wrox books – which I’ve found that I keep gravitating to. There’s ...
After Dmitri posted DataObjects.Net beta2 last night, I couldn’t wait but test the security framework included. If you have been watching you may know that I worked on the provider for MySQL for DataObjects.NET. I was curious to see how the security framework will feel on MySQL. Well to my ‘extreme’ happiness, after I translated the SalesPoint database into MySQL and testing the sample it worked very beautifully. I only had to change the URL in the App.Config file. I have attached the SQL script ...
You’ve all seen this team, maybe you’ve even been on this team. I certainly know that I have! What kind of team, you might ask? It’s the team that is simply dysfunctional. Many reasons can exist for a team that isn’t working, and team dysfunction is a complex thing that can’t necessarily be isolated into a simple formula that will always work to make people function well on a team. Cynefin Recently, I attended RallyOn in Boulder with Rally Software Development. This was one of the best user conferences ...
MVC 3 is becoming hugely popular thanks to Razor and the Helpers that make building web applications much easier. One of the common requirements in web development, both with web forms as well as MVC based development, is the cascading dropdownlist. Now, for Web Forms, we can use a variety of options viz. server side programming, jQuery or using the AJAX Control Toolkit’s cascading dropdownlist control for accomplishing this. I saw a few samples on the internet that used the erstwhile Microsoft AJAX ...
I hit this error when I deployed an app built with Entity Framework onto Windows Azure. Obviously, I wasn’t explicitly using DataReader so it kind of puzzled me. As it happens every time It worked well with local database, application running local and database on SQL Azure. But once I used the Dev Fabric to test the application locally, it failed and gave the above error. Entity Framework relies on using Multiple Active Results Sets (MARS), and it would be a part of connection string multipleactiveresultsets=True. ...
Recently, I was deploying an MVC 3 Application on Windows Azure. The deployment took longer than expected and the Roles were just restarting/repairing and it couldn’t just start the role instances. Only thing that seemed to have worked was uploading the Packages. Post that, the Roles were simply unable to start and be ready. I deleted the deployment, re-created the package and deployed. Still no avail. It would successfully upload the package but post that the roles would never be able to start. ...
