With TechEd Africa starting in two days time I thought I would briefly blog about two useful extensions I use for VS2010 when presenting. They are Presentation Zoom by Chris Granger ZoomEditorMargin by Benjamin Gopp The Presentation Zoom extension creates a global zoom level so that if you zoom a single window, all editor instances will be updated to that zoom level. Before I had this extension I had a few circumstances where I was not aware of the resolution restrictions of the projector until 5 ...
Yesterday, I just posted about How to Fix error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified Well, this is an error message that we can find too "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 28 - Server doesn't support requested protocol)" I struggle to find what is the problem. ...
Introduction I recently found out that I have been awarded with the Q3 Community Champion Award from INETA. It is a honor and a privilege to be part of this Elite group of community leaders. I cannot tell you how excited that I am to be acknowledged by my peers for the community work that I do. Below is what the email said: I would like to congratulate you on winning the INETA Champion Award for the third quarter of 2011. I want to personally thank you for your time and effort in supporting and helping ...
I'm a big fan of automated testing which actually proves something. Unit tests may prove all the components in a solution work independently, but that doesn't mean you have a working solution. Integration tests give you confidence in the whole solution, but the cost of having a test suite with a lot of external dependencies is the risk of false build failures and long-running test suites. To get something in between, we have acceptance tests written in SpecFlow which run tests at the highest layer ...
This is an error message that we can find when we connect to SQL Server: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Hmm… We sometimes spend for hours to fix this issue and In this brief tutorial, I will ...

This issue is related to permission on MachineKeys folder. I think this is right place where you should know what the determination of MachineKeys folder is. What is MachineKeys Folder? The MachineKeys folder stores certificate pair keys for both the computer and users. Both Certificate services and Internet Explorer use this folder. Possible reasons for getting this error message in your application are, may be your application using a certificate or your application trying to access a private key. ...
In the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of familiarising myself with various async patterns in C#. After going through the different approaches one gets a feel for how far we have come since the .Net 1 days. One particular pattern that I was not familiar with implementing but which has been available since the beginning of .Net is what I call the Async Begin / End Pattern. Since my interest is really making calls asynchronously so that I don’t block the UI thread - from what I can tell this ...
Ok, I think this is the coolest contest I have seen. Red-Gate is sending a DBA to Space! If you have mad SQL skills, you should definitely look into this contest. More Information: Red Gate, a U.K.-based software company, has launched a campaign that will reward a database administrator (DBA) with the ultimate getaway: a seat on a commercial flight into space, courtesy of Space Adventures, Ltd But first, DBAs must unravel a Gordian knot of a plot involving morphing Martians, pets in peril, alien ...

Hello Everyone, I thought I’d take a minute to update everyone on my upcoming talks and events that I will be attending. I have talks ranging from Kinect, Silverlight, HTML5 to OData! Wow, that’s a wide range of technology and I’m very passionate about everyone of them. Let’s get started. DevReach - October 17th through the 18th in Sofia, Bulgaria. I will not be speaking at this event only attending. I am very excited because this will be my first time visiting Bulgaria. I am looking forward to meeting ...
OOook, those who know me, or have read my blog probably have a pretty good idea that I’m a silverlight, wpf, wcf, c#, xamly kinda guy. I’ve never really done anything webby, the closest I’ve gotten is doing a bit of backend stuff, well, times change, and quite frankly I wanted to do something new… soooo I’ve opted to go down the MVC route, for two main reasons – 1, I figured I may as well learn a good framework, 2, Matt Abbott told me that MVC lets you get dirty with HTML, and that’s one of the things ...

I’m very excited to announce that we’ll be bringing the Prairie Developer Conference to Alberta in early 2012! I started Prairie Developer Conference in Regina in 2010 as an option to high cost remote conferences, and its become a huge success! With the announcement that Microsoft TechDays won’t be returning to Alberta this year, I think Prairie Dev Con can definitely fill that gap and provide Albertans with a fantastic professional development opportunity! Here are the details: When: March 13 – ...
I have dabbled in async programming in the past but never put any real effort into understanding how things worked. With the new async features in .Net 5 I thought I would give it a look. Here is a quick example of one of the features you can expect in the new framework and how it can make our life easier. The best way to illustrate this is to make a simple WPF application as follows… In the past If we had the following small WPF application with just one window / form… The XAML code for the window ...
First let me say that this is a “what I like” post and not a comparison of platforms. The Windows Phone is the first smart phone that I have owned (no, I’m not 100 or 15 years old). Now that I have done the full disclosure I did want to talk about the features of the Windows Phone that I really enjoy. I have had the Samsung Focus since shortly after it came out. I have found it extremely capable and enjoy the performance of the device. It is light, durable and bright. My wife has the LG Quantum that ...

See you all there!

It looks like Silverlight 5's ComboBox is more restrictive. In Silverlight 4 I could change the ItemsSource of a ComboBox that had a SelectedItem != null, while in Silverlight 5 I have to set SelectedItem to null before I assign a new ItemsSource. Why even mention this? Isn't this obvious? Well, the Silverlight 4 ComboBox simply ignored the SelectedItem and did not complain about the new ItemsSource, so moving to Silverlight 5 may cause some (unexpected) pain. But the real reason for this post is ...
Full Disclosure: I was one of the technical reviewers on this book. I think my friend Tomislav did a great job on this book and it would make a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone that is working with MDX. I really enjoyed reading this and there were even a couple of interesting techniques that I have added to my toolkit. As far as I know there are not any other MDX books on the market quite like this one. It's more aimed at the intermediate level of MDX user and assumes that you have some ...

As a developer of Microsoft technologies I alway think about what programming model and tools are provided by the platform. On Microsoft new operation system Windows 8 developer write two type of applications first one is Metro Style Apps and second one is Desktop Apps. The new Service Release 2 of SharpBox 1.1 comes with support for many new storage providers, e.g. Strato HiDrive, CloudMe or FTP. In addition to that we are also proud to offer our library with SR2 via NuGet which allows to integrate the binaries and all dependencies in a new project very fast. Please use this URL to visit our NuGet gallery page: http://nuget.org/List/Packa... The following list will give you a brief overview about the changes in this service release: ...
When you make a service available external to your corporate network sometimes SSL isn’t secure enough. If you really want to limit the users who can access a service they need to tied to credentials. One of the most common credentials to tie to is a Windows account. What if you are the consumer of these services. When you add a service reference to a Visual Studio 2010 project it does not give you a chance to set credentials. The following example is how you can apply credentials to a service reference. ...
“If only there was some way to quickly and silently install applications and tools on my windows machine.” Chocolatey is kind of like an apt-get, but for Windows. It is a machine level package manager that is built on top of NuGet command line and the NuGet infrastructure. Jason Jarrett recently described it as the free/OSS windows app store. What that means for you is that you can install and update software (applications and tools) on your machine with a few keystrokes and chocolatey does the rest! ...
I have seen a lot of articles about gestures but they require third party libraries or complex coding approaches. What I am going to present here isn’t strictly elegant or necessarily the best approach, but this is the way we would catch this type of event when we were still dealing with message loops. For the app that I have been working on I need to take action on the double-tap of a list item. The first question you have to ask your self is what a double-tap really is. It is in simplest terms ...
In the recently concluded WebCamps, Delhi, I was demonstrating Facebook Authentication implementation for your website using WebMatrix 2 Beta. You can read about my earlier post on WebMatrix 2 Beta from here Using the new WebMatrix 2 Beta, we can create a decent looking starter site with a few clicks as explained in my above post. Once we have the site up and running, we would want to implement authentication. Now, like ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC 3 etc., WebMatrix comes with default Membership infrastructure. ...
While the development server in Visual Studio 2010 is great for most work, it does have 1 shortcoming in that if you start adding content types that are not part of the base set of known Mime types built in, you won’t affect the proper header response that is emitted to the client/browser. For example MP4 files, out of the box the development web server emits application/octet-stream or something like that. What we really need is video/mp4. Now, with IIS Express, you can easily switch over to use ...
In the hours since Steve Jobs death was announced, the world has seemingly fallen into a conjoined state of mourning…well, at least according to my Twitter feed. Quotes Steve made over the years fill the stream, along with reports of people gathering at Apple stores with some garnering memorials outside their doors. Very rarely has someone from the corporate world garnered such a response to their passing. Even more rarely does a corporate individual get a statement from the US President. But its ...
Today is a weird day. I just got the news, as I woke up, that Steve Jobs passed away last night. This news affected me more than I thought it would. I felt the need to write about these emotions, and about my history with Apple. This is probably more for myself than for the reader, so feel free to skip ahead if you don’t like this, but it felt appropriate to keep a few thoughts at this time. Read the rest of this entry » ...
I was informed that my presentation on “Getting Started with the Kinect SDK” is now live on UserGroup.tv. The video quality is not that great, but that is my fault. Our camera quit working and someone had to record the session with an iPad2. Abstract: This talk is also designed for people who want to get started developing with the official Microsoft Kinect SDK. I will walk the user through downloading the bits and starting a new project. We will take a look at several great free open-source tools ...

Recently, a co-worker was talking about how wonderful Spotify was, and I decided to give it a go. I signed up for the ultimate version, because, hey, if you’re going to try something, you should give it a fair shake. I’m also a Pandora One subscriber. The end result is that I’m canceling my Spotify subscription and returning to Pandora. I’ll still use it when I really want to hear a specific song, but probably won’t spend much time in it. You should know that 85% of the time, I’m a “Give me X genre ...

Even though this is one of the simplest tips it is one of the hardest to find someone who has documented it. So instead of just telling you I am going to take a quick sidebar first. I wouldn’t want you to feel you got jipped by stopping here. One thing that happened when I finished running the Mango update on my Samsung Focus was that the apps that I was testing forced me to uninstall them. Now it turns out that this wasn’t that the SDK needed to be upgraded, but that the device had to be reregistered. ...

I was very optimistic when I first saw Metro style apps coded in C# on Windows 8, because for the most part they are not much different than the well known XAML/C# pair on Silverlight or WPF. This led me to brag a bit about probably having a port of MVVM Light ready “in a few days”. Of course I didn’t take in account that I would have a great time the week after //build in Seattle, with fantastic weather and tons of friends to have dinner and conversations with. Needless to say, the few days turned ...
