Initial situation Normally all of our installations are registered to the company name. But now we have the effect that some (developer) tool seems to overwrite this registry entries. That results in the following: License information from operation system in registry If you run winver.exe from a command line you will see this output: Copyright and vendor information from Assemblies And in new projects the information in the AssemblyInfo are: Origin of this problem We don’t know it. Maybe it is a ...

Let me state the obvious, for any application you develop you need to log information, errors, exceptions etc that can help you and others know what’s going on with your application When you create a new Windows Azure application using Visual Studio you will find the following snippet in your configuration file <system.diagnostics> <trace> <listeners> <addtype="Microsoft.Wind... Technorati Tags: Scala,C# to Scala Introduction This post gives an overview of Scala from a C# developer’s perspective in light of efforts for a current .Net port coming closer to fruition. By closer I mean they have the compiler done but not the Visual Studio or SharpDevelop plug-in. From what I could find there is also no CLR based REPL available. You are also unable to call CLR code with generic signatures. While all of these issues are being worked on, to have a play I suggest using the JVM implementation ...
Its been quite some time since I last post on the subject of the AsyncOperationService (in fact quite some since I posted period). In real world use I found some common patterns emerge that has lead me to make a few small adjustments to eliminate some common duplication I was seeing in code consuming the service. Here is the new code file for my ever so slightly improved AsyncOperationService in its entirety. AsyncOperationService using System; using System.Windows; using System.Collections.Generic; ...
I have been working with power shell quite a bit lately, I thought I’d write about 3 tips that have helped me. Notice how it is titled, "Helpful"? not "Ground breaking". It includes helpful commands that I have been using and a nice little Script editor that has one feature enough to win me over. Other's have writen about the commands (most of the time I write so I remember what I've done and how I have resolved issues) but I have not seen others write about other script editors. If you have been ...
I decided today to go back and take another chance to NUnit, but firstly I needed to have a possibility to integrate the NUnit and VS, because launching external program to run my tests is tiring. After few minutes I fonud a nice VS plugin to integrate a Visual Studio and NUnit: it's name is Visual NUnit. I had one problem with this extension. When I wanted to fire my first NUnit test, I had an System.BadImageFormatException exception. I had to change the tests project target platform to x86. After ...

Visual Studio have a nice integration of Extensions. Sometime when you want a feature you can easily got extensions (plugins) from Visual Studio gallery. Sometime some user have trouble the performance in VS when they got install too many plugins. As in 2010 Visual studio not have functionality to remove all plugin component by one click. We have two services, that can be called independently, but also can be used together. They have some common types, and if they called together, default Visual Studio proxy generation will create the same types in different namespaces. There are multiple articles, that recommend to use command line SvcUtil instead of Visual Studio IDE. The article How to reuse types across service endpoints suggests on client side manually update Reference.svcmap to include multiple <MetadataSources> and NamespaceMappings ...

Evansville .NET Users Group

On August 23rd, 2011, I will be presenting an Introduction to Visual Studio LightSwitch at the Evansville, Indiana .NET Users Group.

Introduction One of the first things I wanted to do after installing the Azure AppFabric June CTP was to create an AppFabric application that used the Bing Map SOAP services. That was when I hit my first roadblock. There is currently no option in the AppFabric Application Designer to add a reference to an external service. After asking around in the forums I learned that I should build an external service to do this. There is currently very little documentation on creating external services for Azure ...

Yesterday I started a discussion about adding a new command to nuget.exe. It ended in creating an extension to the command line that behaves in the same way without having to dive into the nuget code base or add more complexity to it. I haven’t seen any blog posts or documentation surrounding this new concept (new in nuget 1.4) of extending the command line except for Matt Hamilton’s posts on using NuGet for plug-ins and NuGet with MEF (which are not quite this concept). Here is my experience. I ...

MvcScaffolding is a tremendous productivity improvement for MVC developers. Earlier this year, Steve Sanderson posted the definitive 7-part series on MvcScaffolding which is a must-read for anyone serious about doing scaffolding. The best part about the scaffolding infrastructure is that MvcScaffolding is actually built on top of another package called T4Scaffolding. T4Scaffolding can be used as the basis for *any* scaffolding – not just MVC projects. To that end, we can enjoy the same power of MvcScaffolding ...

This is a recent question I ran into on the MSDN TFS Forums. Made me think why I use it and how to make it effective. Here is what my response to this was … “My #1 justification is the fact that when you are looking at TFS source control is not all it does. TFS has the benefit of enabling a solutions team with different roles the right level of visibility. Not everyone will use Visual Studio, for example project managers. In many cases Visual Studio can intimidate the individual. When deployed with ...

Okay, so the title may have been a little misleading. I'm not going to show you how to avoid warning CA0060, but how to avoid your build failing because of this warning. This is only helpful if you are running FxCop as a Post-build Event. When FxCop fails due to its inability to find indirectly referenced assemblies, it exits with error code 512 (0x200 - Assembly Reference Error). So all you need to do is check that error code, send out a simple warning message, and reset the error code to 0. The ...

Hi there, Recently we had a requirement to integrate a RESTful Service with BizTalk Server. Well no biggie. You can use WCF – Custom Adapter and use webHTTP binding and add a webHttp Endpoint behavior. Wala. Easy to say, little bit tricky to do. That all is fine, but what if you want to have a polling receive location which needs to go and do an HTTP GET to a RESTful Service. Aahh!! That’s even more trickier. Bunch of you reading this post would have already thought about some or other way of doing ...
Introduction One of the features that I’m surprised to see hardly no one talk about is “Communication Between Local Silverlight-Based Applications”. This is not new to Silverlight as it has been around since Silverlight 3. In other words, this will allow you to have two Silverlight applications running on the same PC talk to one another without using Web Services, etc. I originally was looking into this for a pet project that I was going to use with Kinect, but found this very valuable and decided ...

I'm looking for a way to providing users (administrators) of a web application to automatically (meaning it's opt-in to update, but the installation should be automatic when started) update said web application when new versions are released. The reason why I want an automatic approach is that I want the users to be able to update the web application while it's running remotely, without having to gain physical access to the machine (including RDP). I could of course write my own code for this, but ...
To remove all source control from a TFS project (not a VS project!) - you must use the 'tf destroy' tool. If, like me you try to delete the top-level directory/project node in Source Control Explorer (within VS), then you'll likely get the following error: TF10169: Unsupported pending change attempted on team project folder $/MyProject. Use the Project Creation Wizard in Team Explorer to create a project or the Team Project deletion tool to delete one. So, this (removing source control) is useful ...
Inicamos… La gente ...
Motivation Encouraged from the article “Using NuGet without committing packages to source control” I decided to wrap the NuGet-call in a MSBuild target instead of using a pre-build event. Because we also trigger FxCop and StyleCop via targets this fits better in our project management. Create the targets-file First at all we need a targets-file for integration. It is located in a DevTree beside the NuGet-executable beneath a special tool-folder: The content is quite simple: <Project xmlns="http://schemas.micro... ...
Introduction The official Kinect SDK has been out for a while now and I haven’t seen many people actually doing “how-to” post to get others started developing for it. I decided that I would help kick-start the movement by creating a series called, “Kinecting the Dots”. This is going to be a series of blog posts covering questions or concerns that I’ve seen in the community. I am planning on answering questions so if you have one that you want answered then please contact me by using the form above. ...
When you generate an MSI you need to set at least Product Version Product Code Package Code Upgrade code is not mandatory but in reality it is also a must or you will not be able to create upgrade msi packages. One interesting thing about ProductVersion is that you can choose to set a 4 digit version like 1.1.1.0 but MSI will only use the first three digits for version checking. Its format is major.minor.build. This is important if you decide to create a update or upgrade package. Have a look for ...

Binding file for WCF Adapter doesn't save the password no matter it is generated by "Add Generated Items..." wizard in Visual Studio or "Export Bindings..." in administration console. It is by design dut to the consideration of security, but it is very annoying especially when you import bindings which contain multiple WCF send ports. The way to aviod retyping password everytime after an import is to edit the binding file before import. Here is what needs to be done. 1. Find the following string: ...
