Recently, while browsing Visual Studio extensions I came across the SharpKit tool. It sparked my curiosity as I'm always looking for ways to improve my jQuery and Javascript in general. Working off the example in my previous post about Updating the Content of a WebGrid async we can generate the same Javascript via the SharpKit project. First, head to theSharpKit site to download and setup your first project (check out the Screencasts). Or search "jQuery" in Visual Studio 2010 extension manager. So ...
Full Disclaimer: Since I am on the GeeksWithBlog.NET Influencer list, I was issued a free 1-year subscription to DiscountASP.NET TFS2010 remote hosting. With that said, the thoughts/opinions located below are my own. I’ve always like Team Foundation Server. The main thing that I’ve hated about it was installing/maintaining it. I’d rather spend that time learning more about things such as Silverlight/WPF/WP7. I really didn’t know what to expect as we use another source control at work and I’ve never ...
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I’ll be speaking on IntelliTrace at Tech Ed 2001 – North America. This blog post is the first in a series that I’ll publish as I delve into IntelliTrace in more detail, in preparation for my talk. IntelliTrace is enabled by default in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but it is configured so as to only capture some basic information, so as to not impact application performance. I thought a good starting point would be to look and see what the different configuration ...
I am in the proccess of putting together a demo machine. i arleady have a Windows 7 VM with the essentials for SharePoint Deveopment. But I spent some part of the weekend putting together a demo machine and after some thinking I decided to share some points that you might want to consider when putting together a Development or Demo machine as a SharePoint Developer\Consultant. I also welcome any comments and opinions or rebuttles to any of these points. I spent some time and put together a WIndows ...
Over the last few days I’ve been coding away with several ORMS and code generators trying to find me one which I am comfortable with. Here is what I learn Not all ORMs are perfect! I’ve been using this for quite a while now. It is excellent for small projects, both Web and Winform apps. It’s a breeze to setup and get off and ...

I recently did some training for a client and one of the topics that came up was upgrading existing 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 Projects. I just wanted to share some of the issues that came up and the discussion that might be usefull to others. If you developed customizations for SharePoint 2007 you either Visual Studio 2005/2008 VSeWSS 1.1/1.2/1.3 or you used WSPBuilder. A lot of fellow SharePoint MVP's and experienced SharePoint Developers used WSPBuilder. I personally prefered it over the VSeWSS ...

At TechEd India 2011 I presented on HTML5 Development with Visual Studio 2010 SP1. I wanted to cover the aspects that were discussed in my session. HTML5 1. HTML5 is the emerging but promising trend in web development 2. Some of the standards have got green signal i.e. they are candidate recommendations. 3. Some others are still work in progress. 4. IE9 implements standardized HTML5 specifications. Visual Studio 2010 and HTML5 Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 comes from basic HTML5 support. Having ...
UPDATE: Scott Hanselman has a NuGet package to automate many of these steps and you should check it out, http://www.hanselman.com/bl... Today, at Tech Ed India 2011, I delivered this session – Web Forms vs. MVC choosing the right one for web development. Although its a tricky topic, it was worth clarifying some of the patterns to decide between Web Forms and MVC. One of the demo scenarios I took ...
Let me start with this disclaimer: this is not a supported environment. You may/will run into problems and then you’re on your own. Microsoft will not help you here. If you want to develop for Surface (v1, that is, since that’s the only one available at this time of writing) you will have to use Windows Vista 32bit and Visual Studio 2008 Pro or higher. So, that’s out of the way. Let’s return to the real world. I am, of course, running Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) and Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. After ...
Employee Info Starter Kit is an open source ASP.NET project template that is intended to address different types of real world challenges faced by web application developers when performing common CRUD operations. Using a single database table ‘Employee’, it illustrates how to utilize Microsoft ASP.NET 4.0, Entity Framework 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010 effectively in that context. Employee Info Starter Kit is highly influenced by the concept ‘Pareto Principle’ or 80-20 rule. where it is targeted to ...

Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now. The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development. Now, the final release of SP1 is available. The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again. You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. ...

Introduction Now that the dust has settled and everyone has downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, its time to talk about a new feature included that will help Silverlight Developers profile their applications. Let’s take a look at what the official documentation says about it: Performance Wizard for Silverlight – taken from VS2010 SP1 KB. Visual Studio 2010 SP1 enables you to tune the Silverlight application performance by profiling the code. A traditional code profiler cannot ...
*Moved to: Installing Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1As has become customary when the product team releases a new patch, SP or version I like to document the install. This post seams almost redundant as I had no problems, but I think that is as valuable to other thinking of installing the Service Pack as all the problems that we sometimes get. Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the ...
Disclosure: I performed the following activities on my Windows 7 SP1 system, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and a local Basic installation of TFS 2010. As with any deployment of a service pack into a server environment, take your recommended precautions and be aware of the changes you are putting in. With that said, make sure you backup your databases, and that you have an exit/rollback strategy in the event of an unexpected situation. Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 corresponds to KB2182621. ...

After you download and install the January 2011 Windows Phone update, you will notice one annoying thing. The default deployment target for Windows Phone Projects in Visual Studio changes to Windows Phone 7 Device. Before the update, it defaulted to the Emulator. I found this extremely annoying as I’m more than likely going to test with the emulator before putting it on my actual device. Now to make things fair, Microsoft told you they were going to switch the default and even provided a solution, ...
This post is built upon the work of Mario Kosmiskas and David C. Chou’s prior postings – from here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mar... http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dac... As Mario points out in his post, when you need to have more control over the process that starts, it generally is better left to a RoleEntryPoint capability that as of now, requires the use of a CLR based assembly that ...
Many applications need Claim Based Authentication instead of Classic Mode Authentication. The Form Based Authentication (FBA) is one type of Claim Based Authentication. The default login page of FBA in SharePoint 2010 is very simple which only provides a simple Login control with the user name, password and remember me option. But many developers want to implement a customized login page for a better looking experience or more options according to business requirements. Creating and Deploying a Custom ...
I am scheduled to share on NuGet (http://nuget.codeplex.com/) at the Deerfield Beach Coder’s Café on March 1st, 2011. My goal for this talk is to present demos and content covering how to leverage this new neat utility to easily “package” .Net-based binaries or tools and share them with others, who in-turn, can just as easy reference and readily use that same package in their Visual Studio 2010 .Net projects. Scott Hanselman has recently blogged in great detail on creating NuGet packages. For hosting ...
After a couple of year hiatus from blogging at Geeks With Blogs, I’m back! I’m still blogging about Visual Studio 2010 and TFS 2010 over at Team System Rocks (soon to undergo some major revisions), so expect to see some cross postings from there. Here though, I expect to focus on System Center technologies (mostly System Center Operations Manager and System Center Service Manager, with some of the others thrown in there too, as that is my day job now.. I’ll also use this blog to start tracking my ...
*Moved to: Do you know about the Visual Studio 2010 Database Projects Guidance?Early on in the Team System (now Visual Studio ALM) cycle a new product surfaced within Team System that was affectionately called “Data Dude”, but had the more formal name of “Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals”. The purpose of this product was to try and make the database a “first class citizen” in the development world. Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
The hardest part about using a new technology, such as HTML 5, is getting to what features are available and the syntax. One way to learn how to use new technologies is to adapt your current development to help you use the technology in comfort of your own development environment. For .NET Web Developers, that environment is usually Visual Studio 2010. This technique intends on showing you how to get HTML 5 Intellisense working in your current version of Visual Studio 2008 or 2010, making it easier ...
*Moved to: How Visual Studio 2010 and Team Foundation Server enable Compliance One of the things that makes Team Foundation Server (TFS) the most powerful Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) platform is the traceability it provides to those that use it. This traceability is crucial to enable many companies to adhere to many of the Compliance regulations to which they are bound (e.g. CFR 21 Part 11 or Sarbanes–Oxley.)Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
All of us work with Visual Studio (or the free Visual Web Developer Express Edition) for developing web applications targeting ASP.NET / ASP.NET MVC or Silverlight etc., Over the years, Visual Studio has grown to a great extent. From being a simple limited functionality tool in VS.NET 2002 to the multi-faceted, MEF driven Visual Studio 2010, it has come a long way. And as much as Visual Studio supports rapid web development by generating HTML mark up, it also added intellisense for some of the HTML ...
If you tried to install the Visual Studio 2010 Express project and item templates of MVVM Light V3 SP1 (with the Windows Phone tools hotfix), you may have encountered an error when unzipping the package, telling you that a file was corrupted. This error was reported to me a couple of times, and I was able to reproduce the issue. Read the rest of this entry » ...
So I’ve been doing some upgrades just to see if things will work from 2007 to 2010. So far most of the stuff I want works, but obviously there are some things that break. Did you guys know that in 2007 you could add a webpart to the view pages for lists and libraries without losing the toolbar? In 2010 the ribbon disappears every time you add a webpart. So if you are using Scot Hillier’s Codeplex project to hide buttons it will not work the same way, because the ribbon is going to disappear altogether. ...

Hi, I presented on Windows Phone 7 app development using Silverlight. Many of my clients are actively using Silverlight 4 and RIA Services to build powerful line of business applications. Getting things set up correctly is critical to being to being able to take full advantage of the RIA services plumbing and when developers struggle with the setup they tend to shy away from the solution as a whole. I’m a big proponent of RIA services and wanted to take the opportunity to share some of my experiences in setting up these types of projects. In late 2010 I presented a ...

It’s been quiet around here. And the reason for that is that it’s been quiet around Surface for a while. Now, a lot of people assume that when a product team isn’t making too much noise that must mean they stopped working on their product. Remember the PDC keynote in 2010? Just because they didn’t mention WPF there a lot of people had the idea that WPF was dead and abandoned for Silverlight. Of course, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The same applies to Surface. While we didn’t hear much ...
