Just thought I would get a couple of notes up here for reference to anyone that is interested...it is now Feb 2011 and I have not been posting here enough to remember this blog. Back in Nov 2010 I ordered the Ti launchpad msp430, it is a little target board kit replete with a mini USB cable, two very inexpensive programmable mcu's and a couple of pin headers with a couple of led's on board, a spi connector some on board jumpers and two programmable micro switches....all for less than $5.00...INCLUDING ...

The Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework is a free, centralized code sample library provided by the Microsoft Community team. It aims to provide typical code samples for all Microsoft development technologies. The team listens to developers’ pains in MSDN forums, social media and various developer communities and write code samples based on developers’ frequently asked programming tasks. Additionally, our team offers a free code sample request service. Awesome?! I think so. Have also just added it ...
Another week and another whirlwind of wonderful works coming from the XNA Community. I find it crazy just how hard it is to keep up with everything going on and knowing just how big the community has gotten recognizing just how much I’m missing as well. But here are the things I DID manage to catch… XNA Developers @Chounard ponders whether he should port sfxr to XNA http://twitter.com/Chounard... And showing just how awesome the XNA commmunity @Chounard DOES (and in a day!) ...
It's refreshing to hear Microsoft is branching out their OS to the ARM platform, this could lead to new breeds of programming languages for developing business applications which currently is dominated by the .NET languages. Considering that Windows Phone 7 already runs on ARM and have been quite successful since its launch, I can see Windows OS following suit and becoming more prevalent on portable devices such as tablets. I'm expecting an early alpha or beta version of the Windows x86 port to ARM ...
I have been working on a Silverlight Navigation application which uses LINQ to query an XML data source and has been working without a hitch until I added a control to the landing page. All other pages which worked fine were loaded from the navigation service Once I added the control I got a page not found error! (The page is there) and If navigated to, it works as expected. What happens, it that I closed the error Modal dialog and then clicked on another page, then navigate back to the landing page ...

Just a quick recap of things I noticed going on in or around the XNA community this past week. I’m sure there’s a lot I missed (it’s a pretty big community with lots of different parts to it) but these where the things I caught that I thought were pretty cool. So, I have been pretty quiet for the last month or so. True, it has been holiday time and I went to Cape Town for a stunning week of sunshine and blue skies, but the second I got back home I spent the remainder of my holiday on my pc viewing tutorials on www.tekpub.com Craig Shoemaker, who I got in contact with because of his podcast, sent me a 1 month free subscription to the site and it has been really appreciated. I have done a lot of WPF programming in the past, but not any asp.net stuff and ...
It seems that the Snippet Compiler is not maintained anymore. So I need an alternative – also for getting syntax highlighting for code in publications. Preferable with the possibility to conserve this highlighting by copying selections to clipboard. Snippet Compiler does not allows this for selections – only by exporting the whole file content to clipboard with HTML- or RTF-formatting (File > Export > HTML to clipboard respectively RTF to clipboard). Today I switched to LINQPad. This application ...
I have been spending the last 2 weeks immersing myself in a number of Windows Azure and SQL Azure technologies. And in setting up a new business (I’ll speak more about that in the future), I have also become a customer of Microsoft’s BPOS (Business Productivity Online Services). In short, it has been a fortnight of Microsoft cloud computing. On the Azure side, I’ve looked, of course, at Web Roles and Worker Roles. But I’ve also looked at Azure Storage’s REST API (including coding to it directly), ...
I recently ran into an odd and annoying error when working with the DataContractSerializer class for a WP7 project. I thought I’d share it to save others who might encounter it the same annoyance I had. So I had an instance of ObservableCollection<T> that I was trying to serialize (with T being a class I wrote for the project) and whenever it would hit the code to save it, it would give me: The data contract type 'ProjectName.MyMagicItemsCl... is not serializable because it is not public. ...

This book introduces a new technology that promises a considerable improvement on the ASP.NET membership system. If you ever had to write an extranet, system you should be aware of the problems in setting up membership for your site. The Windows Identity Foundation promises to be an excellent replacement. Therefore the book Programming Windows Identity Foundation - ISBN 978-0-7356-2718-5 at http://oreilly.com/catalog/... is breaking new ground. I recommend this book to all ASP.NET development ...
Today, I'm going to talk about a touchy subject: the notion of working in a company that doesn't use the prescribed "best practices" in its software development endeavours. Over the years I have, using a variety of pseudonyms, asked this question on popular programming forums. Although I always add in some minor variation of the story to avoid suspicion that it's the same person posting, the crux of the tale remains the same: A Programmer’s Tale A junior software developer has just started a new ...
The news hit Monday morning that Google has decided to delay the release of its Google TV platform, and has asked its OEMs to delay any products that embed the software. Coming just about two weeks prior to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Google’s timing is about the worst imaginable. CES is where the platform should have had its coming out party, especially given all the anticipation that has built up since its initial announcement came 7 months ago. At last year’s CES, it seemed every ...

So, I attended the Microsoft Community Evening. The attendance was better than I was expecting for December and we had our first Programming Languages Meeting where Gary did a great presentation on an intro to Ruby. The best surprize of the evening happened when I was about to leave, Robert MacLean asked me how we did our MS licensing – the fact being that we were about to reach the end of our empower license with Microsoft and that I had no idea how we were going to afford upgrading it early next ...

There's an interesting discussion going on over on the Scrum Development list, dealing with technical stories verses user stories. The idea is that "Improve our continuous integration server" may not directly translate to visible functionality for a customer, so how do you handle this in Scrum. It's a conversation that pops up regularly and there are a couple of schools of thought on the subject. I'm not going to get into here. In the midst of this discussion I jokingly (sort of) made a reference ...
I have been using Rx for over a month now and can’t even begin at telling how beautiful it really is and how much it has simplified my life especially working with UI declaratively and without having to worry about Dispatchers, threading etc., and I ended up rewriting most of the custom controls I have build over time to support Rx. And have been a big fan of Observable pattern and WeakEventListeners again had their own limitation which I always found a bit intimidating and for me Reactive Extensions ...

My late contribution to a debate that was raging almost a month ago now… Regarding the upcoming C# 5 asynchronous programming improvements, Eric Lippert blogged about how Microsoft is aware that the "async" and "await" keywords, as shown below, imply the opposite of what they really mean:async void ArchiveDocuments(List<Ur... urls) { Task archive = null; for (int i = 0; i < urls.Count; ++i) { var document = await FetchAsync(urls[i]); if (archive != null) await archive; archive = ArchiveAsync(document); ...
The last couple of weeks I have been working through some proof of concepts for Windows Phone 7. While working through one exercise I had a flashback. The book I was reading mentioned how you needed to code your application to have the smallest possible memory and and processing speed footprint. Suddenly I was back in high school with my Tandy hand-held computer which had a single line of text screen and a whopping 1K of memory. Talk about limitations. So what else can you learn from developing in ...

Over the last 3 years, Microsoft has slowly but surely been embracing REST as a programming model for the web in WCF. .NET 3.5 SP1 introduced some REST constructs allowing us to invoke WCF services with HTTP GET/POST/PUT/DELETE verbs in conjunction with UriTemplates. The REST Starter Kit (RSK) was then introduced on CodePlex and this provided many great features including an HTML help page, request interceptors, an HTTP client library, and more. Then WCF 4 was released and some of the features in ...
Notifications of subsequent publications with Errata fixes. Got an email this week from O’Reilly stating that an updated version of Julia Lerman’s Programming Entity Framework, Second Edition was available. How sweet is that? This latest ‘feature’ of downloading the updated version for FREE is just an ...

C# Station has gone through multiple updates over the years. I started it on the 4th of July 2000, shortly after the first announcement of the C# programming language, hence the name. You can find analytical information on Alexa and the Wayback Machine shows screen shots of changes over time. Whenever you pop something on the Web without much thought, there can be true ugliness. The journey from plain text links to drop-down menus evolved from necessity because the number of pages grew from 1 to ...
