While working on a WPF application, I had a need to show the wait cursor while performing a long running operation. You would expect the code to look as follows: System.Windows.Input.Cursor previousCursor = someWindow.Cursor; someWindow.Cursor = System.Windows.Input.Cursor... try { LongRunningOperation(); } finally { someWindow.Cursor = previousCursor; } However, I didn't want the long running process tying up the UI thread. I needed to run the long running operation on its own thread. I decided ...

Using a simulated dialog window is a nice way to handle inline data editing. The jQuery UI has a UI widget for a dialog window that makes it easy to get up and running with it in your application. With the release of ASP.NET MVC 3, Microsoft included the jQuery UI scripts and files in the MVC 3 project templates for Visual Studio. With the release of the MVC 3 Tools Update, Microsoft implemented the inclusion of those with NuGet as packages. That means we can get up and running using the latest version ...
I've recently refactored the way Routes are declared in an ASP.NET MVC application I'm working on, and I wanted to share part of the system I came up with; a really easy way to declare and keep track of ASP.NET MVC Routes, which then allows you to find the name of the Route which has been selected for the current request. Traditional MVC Route Declaration Traditionally, ASP.NET MVC Routes are added to the application's RouteCollection using overloads of the RouteCollection.MapRoute() method; for ...
If you’re like me, having those PDF version for offline review are great. It was a pain before as I had to individually print web pages to single PDF using tools. I was poking around today and found this great article on caching: http://www.cloudcomputingde... Caching is a great way to boost application performance and keep down overhead on a database or file system. Its also great when you have say 3 web roles as shown in this articles Figure 2 that can share the same cache. If one of the roles goes offline then the cache is still there and can be used. You can change out your asp.net caching to use this pretty ...

This blog post sounds specific but most of the troubleshooting tips can be applied to other scenarios: Troubleshooting Microsoft Message Queuing Issues on Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) plays an important role in the Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Monitoring/Archiving server infrastructure: in a distributed network environment, MSMQ is used to transmit data from agents located on other servers (such as Front End Servers) to Monitoring/Archiving servers. The purpose of this ...
I presented sessions on MVC .Net and webmatrix. I covered stuff like what’s new in MVC .net and the architecture goodness of MVC pattern. I also demonstrated how MVC 3 / MVC 4 harness HTML 5 / mobile along with Jquery and Modernizr. PHP coding using MVC and Webmatrix and other advanced stuff like hosting PHP on windows or porting MYSQL Db to MSSQL is also is also part of the demo in the sessions. The slide decks are available at below link and all the demo is recorded and also shared at below link. ...
I took a shot at new (to me) certification exam for BizTalk 2010. I was able to pass it without any preparation just based on the experience. That does not mean this exam is a very simple one. Comparing to previous (2006 R2) it covers some new areas (like WCF) and has some demanding questions and situation to think about. But the most challenging factor is broad feature coverage. Overall, the impression that if BizTalk continues to grow in scope it’s better to create separate exams for core functionality ...
Memory for managed code is handled by the garbage collector, but if you use any kind of unmanaged code, like native resources of any kind, open files, streams and window handles, your application may leak memory if these are not properly handled. To handle such resources the classes that own these in your application should implement the IDisposable interface, and preferably implement it according to the pattern described for that interface. When you suspect a memory leak, the immediate impulse would ...

The software industry lives within an interesting paradox. IT in the enterprise moves slowly and cautiously, upgrading only when safe and necessary. IT interests intentionally live in the past. On the other hand, developers, and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) not only want to use the latest and greatest technologies, but this constituency prides itself on gauging tech’s future, and basing its present-day strategy upon it. Normally, we as an industry manage this paradox with a shrug of the shoulder ...
(DISCLAIMER: Yes there are lots of more elegant ISO software beside the free Microsoft one I’m about to show. But free is free and it has been tested and works for me for making advance bootable USB drives. That is another story. Look up Windows 8 Developer Preview for that one on BING.) For those of use that work with new technology all the time we accumulate a lot of ISO files and have to burn them to CD/DVD’s quite often. But we now have machines without burner in the corporate environment. We ...

It’s a small step, but its purpose is to show that ...

© 2011 By: Dov Trietsch. All rights reserved Ranking Part II In my introduction to ranking I also introduced the Ranking Game. This is actually a much more sophisticated program than the one we need to simply rate an item, but it introduced you to the sophisticated results that you may achieve by a bit of code and accompanying CSS. In this installment, I am going to handle simple rating with 5 stars. The extra sophistication will come in the form of creating new elements in run time. Why do I need ...

© 2011 By: Dov Trietsch. All rights reserved Ranking Ranking is quite common in the internet. Readers are asked to rank their latest reading by clicking on one of 5 (sometimes 10) stars. The number of stars is then converted to a number and the average number of stars as selected by all the readers is proudly (or shamefully) displayed for future readers. SharePoint 2007 lacked this feature altogether. SharePoint 2010 allows the users to rank items in a list or documents in a library (the two are ...
For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the ...
Sometimes your ASP.NET application needs to hook up some code before even the Application is started. Assemblies supports a custom attribute called PreApplicationStartMethod which can be applied to any assembly that should be loaded to your ASP.NET application, and the ASP.NET engine will call the method you specify within it before actually running any of code defined in the application. Lets discuss how to use it using Steps : 1. Add an assembly to an application and add this custom attribute to ...
