The problem statement: I am tired of thinking how to show a simple message box or user prompt and act based on the response in Model-View-View-Model (MVVM). Common approaches: - It's ok, let's just do this one thing from ViewModel and mock this out for unit testing - Design my own dialog, then what to do from there - Can I write something in view code behind, ah yes, that seems to be the only way out, as anyway MVVM is still not matured... - and what not? I am pretty much one among the few frustrated ...

Getting ready to fly to Vegas and MIX10 is really an exciting time! Microsoft has published the schedule for the MIX10 sessions. I have a sweet spot, and I dearly hope that it stays this way (Last year I had a great spot, but it was changed last minute and then I had a much better one, “competing” against Vertigo and their Playboy app… yeah try to explain to a bunch of geeks that MVVM is better than Playboy… good luck with that ;) Anyway, this year my sweet spot is on the very first day of the conference (there are workshops on Sunday, but this qualifies as pre-conference), ...

Thanks to all who came to the MVVM jam tonight. In case you wanted to see what a completed solution looks like, you can download it here. There are many tweaks that can be made, and it is certainly not the only solution… but hopefully, it helps to understand how the MVVM pattern can be applied. It is an eyes-forward talk about more patterns similar to MVVM ...
For those in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area, you might be familiar with the “Come Jam With Us” project. Every week, we get together for an hour and code on a particular topic. This week, on Tuesday, March 2nd, I will be hosting an MVVM jam session at 5:30 (directions). I will be taking you through the process of ...

Update: Shawn Wildermuth has changed his session and will be talking about Silverlight Security instead. The MIX conference this year had an open call for sessions, and 12 sessions were voted by the public out of 169. Surprisingly (or maybe not that surprisingly in fact), 3 sessions out of the 12 have the MVVM pattern in their title. This shows a lot of interest for this pattern which is helping the developer to create decoupled, testable, blendable applications in Silverlight and in WPF. Read the ...
This morning, very early (or very late depending how you see it), I learned that one of the sessions I submitted to the MIX 2010 open call for speakers had been picked by the public. Out of 169 sessions, only 12 were picked, so you imagine my feelings right now. Honestly, I am sure that this will be a good session, but it could have gone either way, and I had prepared myself mentally for the alternative possibility too. Read the rest of this entry » ...

More Adventures in MVVM So, I am getting myself ready to head out to Sandusy, Ohio for three days of nerdy fun at CodeMash. While I am there, I will be giving my “Introduction to the MVVM Pattern”. In preparation for this talk, I decided to create a new demo application. This application is a calendar and session list for the conference. It is not terribly fancy (I wish I had more time (or talent) to skin it better), but it highlights many of the concepts that I will be speaking about in my presentation. ...

This year Microsoft decided to have an open call for sessions for the MIX 2010 in Las Vegas. This conference, in case you don’t know it yet, is a great 3 days about modern client technologies, such as ASP.NET, Windows Presentation Foundation and of course Silverlight. This year, MIX is taking place from the 15th to the 17th of March 2010 in the Mandalay Bay hotel in Vegas. Today, the voting began! I didn’t count them, but there seems to be more than 100 sessions lined up, and the competition is fierce: ...
I have had a couple of discussions with some former co-workers in the past couple of weeks regarding "what I am doing now", and each one of them seems to have the same "whoa, thats different" comment on it. To be honest, I felt the same way. It really seems like over the past 7-8 years, Microsoft has gone against the grain of what they had been doing back in the traditional ASP days, in continuing to produce new technologies (.Net Framework / ASP.Net / Atlats / AJAX / XAML / WPF / WCF / Silverlight ...

This year has been a pretty amazing year. A few weeks ago, I was writing about my first year at IdentityMine. One of the MVVM Light Toolkit’s user requested that I add the possibility to pass the EventArgs of an event to the ICommand that it is bound to through the EventToCommand trigger. At first I was a bit reluctant because it seems like a transgression of the rule that says you should avoid to have too much knowledge about the UI layer in the ViewModel. For example, if you have a RelayCommand in the ViewModel that expects a MouseEventArgs, it kinds of binds you to a certain kind of UI element, which ...
