Yes, I was. Recently, I’ve taken a good hard look at JavaScript. I’ve used it before but mostly in the capacity of web design. Using JQuery to make your web page do cool stuff is different than really creating a JavaScript application using all of the language constructs. What I’m finding as I use it more is that I may have been wrong about my assumptions about it. Let me explain. I enjoyed doing cool stuff with JQuery but the limited experience with JavaScript as a language coupled with the bad ...

Problem Normally PostSharp runs fine on unattended build servers. So on our global Jenkins continuous integration server PostSharp does the job. But on my local TeamCity continuous integration server I got the following error: POSTSHARP error PS0127: The aspect 'EsriDE.Commons.Logging.Aop... uses non-licensed features (Basic Features). Performance testing is almost always conducted to address one or more risks related to expense, opportunity costs, continuity, and/or corporate reputation. But not everyone thinks their application requires investment in performance testing. We presented few of our clients who were heavily focussed on functional requirements but did not care too much about the Non-functional requirements with a short questionnaire, User’s will be happy if the website loaded in <= ___ seconds. The first of the build guides just got published! And you can find it in the "Build Guide" section or by following link: Click here... Exerp: In this first part of the build guide series we look at building a Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 server. Whilst installing the basic operating system on a server is fairly straightforward it is as good a place as any to start as we lay the foundations for the rest of our infrastructure. In future parts of this series we will look at automating this install as much ...
Problem Our global Jenkins continuous integration server throws this error during compile step. My local TeamCity continuous integration server runs fine. What is the difference. Background I integrate some static code analysis steps via MSBuild-targets in the csproj files. To allow a fast developing without a code analysis for ever compiling I bound these targets only to RELEASE-configuration. With the MSBuild element <ImportGroup> only one condition must be specified. So my construct was: ...

This is the second of a three part series that deals with the issue of faking test data in the context of a legacy app that was built with Microsoft's Entity Framework (EF) on top of an MS SQL Server database – a scenario that can be found very often. Please read the first part for a description of the sample application, a discussion of some general aspects of unit testing in a database context, and of some more specific aspects of the here discussed EF/MSSQL combination. Here is a technique to bind a List (of objects) to a DataGridView so that the public Properties appear as columns. In this example, the columns are binded to the individual public property of the object. The column Random Number is binded to the public property RandomNumber while the column Square Root to the public property SqRt. For good or bad, Microsoft’s Entity Framework (EF) has become one of the most widely used ORM tools out there. While some may state that it's not among the better ones (or that it's not even a real ORM), it’s definitely the most convenient one: its Visual Studio integration and consequently its integration with the MS SQL Server database is unparalleled. This is especially relevant to people who haven’t used the concept of object-relational mapping before - there's almost no initial learning curve ...
Today's $10 Deal of the Day from Apress at http://www.apress.com/97814... is Pro Dynamic .NET 4.0 Applications Data-Driven Programming for the .NET Framework "As a developer, you are likely painfully aware that not all features of an application can be anticipated when the software ships. The updates are installed, all you want to do now is get connected, authenticated and get going. The first step needed here is to open Visual Studio 2010, once opened then you need to get to Team Explorer. Once there, you will click on the Connect to Team Project button on the toolbar. If you had a connection defined to another TFS environment, this will be adding one more, so you click on Servers… On the next dialog, you will click on Add… Then you will proceed to provide the details of your Team ...
Once you have configured your online preview, then you can proceed to connect to it using Visual Studio 2010. In order to get Live ID authentication working and such, there is an update you need to apply. This is something that can be accessed through the Administration page, and then clicking on download software. Clicking on that link will take you to the Visual Studio ALM + Team Foundation Server Blog. From this page, you will be able to download the needed component to connect and authenticate ...
A while back read a book called the “pragmatic programmer”. Great book and I highly recommend – A section in the book was titled “Power Editing” and a suggestion they made was to have one editor. The motivation being that it is better to know one editor very well, and use it for all editing tasks: code, documentations, memos, etc. I buy into this concept – up to this point I work primarily in Visual Studio and do any other text editing in notepad or programmers notepad and while I have been able ...
The Distinguished Field is often seen as the weaker of the two types of Fields when handling Fields in BizTalk. After all, the Distinguished Field can’t be used as a filter on a message, and it’s slower than its big brother the Promoted Field. Well, today I’m here to dispel the myth of the wimpy Distinguished Field and place in the pantheon of power that equals, and in some ways exceeds the Promoted Field. MYTH: Getting the value of a Distinguished Field requires loading the entire message into memory. ...

So you have started using DevExpress XPO/XAF and now you would like to see how to use the EDMX (Entity Data Model XML) visual designer within Visual Studio to draw your entities and relationships. First let’s explain the steps we are going to do and what is taking place, then I’ll give you the steps to accomplish this. The EDMX design surface is what is currently being used to generate Entity Framework code. What we have done is to intercept the saving of the diagram and use this to generate XPO/XAF ...
One of our .net application teams has had a problem for quite a while that related to impersonation and kerberos multi-hop delegation which had proven quite difficult to resolve. We eventually resolved this and I thought it would be worth popping a little bit of information about it out there incase anyone else has similar problems. We had two web services with 2 methods which participate in a Kerberos multi-hop delegation scenario using WSE 2. One of the methods works fine all of the time and the ...
I've been back working with BizTalk 2006 R2 for a customer recently and I've become such a fan of the BDD style acceptance tests I've done in the past with BizTalk 2010 that its quite frustrating working back in Visual Studio 2005 and not being able to use Specflow alongside BizUnit 4 like I described in the recent videos on these subjects BizTalk & BDD Part 1 BizTalk & BDD Part 2 In BizTalk 2006 development your back to the older style xml bizunit tests and we were looking at some old tests ...
This is just a reminder for my self of how and why we do this. We have 2 projects within a TFS project collection for our integration component developments. We have: 1. A project for .net based integration projects 2. A project for BizTalk based integration projects The main reason we do this is so we dont have loads of TFS projects as we have a significant number of components but also we want some different rules around check in and source control locks etc etc..... At this stage our build servers ...
Hello, This is my first blog on http://www.geekswithblogs.net and I'm planning on occasionaly publishing things I've learned that I haven't found elsewhere in hopes of helping you out. I've been annoyed with Silverlight and the Resource (.resx) files we use for translation. Every time I change text in the resource editor, I have to open the .designer.cs file and change the constructor to public. If it is not public, the resource string cannot be bound to in XAML, there is a runtime error. The code ...

In trying to comparing complex objects to confirm a unit test, I thought rather than going through the hassle of trying to implement IComparable or overriding .Equals that perhaps reflection would be a better means. A quick google search turned up some useful code that compares via reflection. This was close to what I wanted but I thought it’d be better to have it available as an extension method and I needed it in vb.net (excuse the horror) so this is what I came up with: <System.Runtime.Compiler... ...
Sometimes you just wish Exchange would not act as a total baby! I worked on a case today which had 2 Exchange 2010 servers in a DAG with about 6 mailboxes, all in healthy status. All but one that is. In SQL Server 2008 you can use table valued parameters which can be pretty useful. In the example I use a very simple one to overcome SQL Server’s lack of having a parameter as an array. The example goes through creating the new type, using it in a stored procedure and calling it from an application (VB.Net in this example). You start off with creating the new type. Under Programmability/Types/User-... Table Types create a new table. Here I created a table with a single column to hold an integer. ...
One of the cool things about HTML5 is the ability to play audio/video files out of the box without the dependency on plugins. Earlier I had written about HTML5 Video and the fallback using Silverlight for non-supported scenarios Visual Studio 2010 SP1 has decent support for HTML5, in terms of intellisense, validation etc., But, one issue that is constantly faced when using the HTML5 Video tag in an ASP.NET Application (Web/MVC) built using Visual Studio is that, the videos doesn’t play when running ...

Last week I pushed a new application up to production, and started hearing complaints of a memory leak. After running some diagnostics I learned two exciting things: http://bugs.jqueryui.com/ti... The current version of jQuery UI (1.18.16) has a memory leak with the DatePicker control - including the DatePicker control as part of the jQuery UI is all it takes to cause memory to be allocated and never returned until the browser is closed. About a month ago, Microsoft announced the release of Lync for Mac. If you have access to TechNet or MSDN you likely have access to download this tool. Among the benefits of the tool, being able to connect to Office 365. Exciting news, yet for some odd reason it was a battle if you had upgraded to Lion (have not heard of anyone having issues that is running on Snow Leopard). Microsoft then released an update for Lync for Mac. Now, after the update, it was still no dice for me. Upon further research ...
