Being told you’re vacationing wrong may have you scratching your head. After all, what could you possibly do wrong when it comes to taking some time off? It is a widely held belief that Americans do vacations wrong. They simply do not take off enough time, since there are no laws regarding paid vacation days.

Further, companies are notorious for hiring too few employees and leaving no room for permanent staff to have a vacation. When employees request time off, they are often told that their absence will leave the company in a pinch and they should come back quickly.

Some statistics

A 2013 report studied the vacation policies of twenty-one developed nations. This report included most of Europe, as well as the United States, and found that the United States is the only outlier in the entire study. While most developed nations offer ten to thirty government-mandated paid leave days per year, the United States has no laws governing leave.

So, as a result, employers are not legally required to allow employees time off. If they do allow employees to take time off, the law allows that they do not pay employees for the time that they are away from the office, and so most employees just simply can’t afford to take a vacation.

Why don’t we like vacations?

While it is obvious that not being paid during vacations can deter many from taking one, another study in 2018 asked Americans why they refuse to take vacations. The outcome of the report cites many reasons, including some unlikely ones.

Many of the participants stated that a vacation is more stressful than work since they either have too many deadlines or dread the volume of work they will return to. Others stated that their managers had pressured them into not taking vacation time, and they obliged to stay on their boss’s good side. 

In relation to this, many employees believe that taking a vacation reduces their chances for advancement in their companies. Finally, many believe it is pointless to take a vacation since we are living in an ever-connected world, thanks to smartphones and the internet.

Guilt-free vacationing

When you want to take a vacation, you may feel guilty for leaving your boss, or your company, without your valuable input. The business gets international promotion and exposure, you get a break, and your work in the office is still being completed on time. Everyone’s a winner in this scenario.

The need for a break

Everyone gets exhausted at some point. Even if you absolutely adore your job, sometimes you just need some time to yourself. Emotional, physical, and mental burnouts are the leading causes of stress and work-related illnesses. If you’re usually very healthy and find yourself suddenly getting flu, you may need to schedule a vacation.

Quality vacations of ten to fourteen days are essential to replenish energy stores and rejuvenate your motivation. Even the most motivated employees can find themselves running out of steam when they work too much. Vacations are essential to productivity, so go take one.
