Using networking in the device emulators in VS2005 is not as nice as it should be.

The first time you try to use the network in the emulator you'll probably get this error:  "Failed to open the VPC Network Driver. Verify that the driver is installed, or install the driver from the Web download location at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=46859".

Or if the first time you try to use the network is with the IP*Works! .Net CF Edition components, you'll get an even uglier error saying:  "A socket operation encountered a dead network".

For whatever reason, networking doesn't just work.  In my experience, you must first start ActiveSync 4, then run the Emulator Device Manager from the VS2005 Tools menu, start the emulator you'd like to use, and then right click that emulator in the Emulator Device Manager and choose "cradle".  Then your emulator will connect through ActiveSync just as if it were a real device.

It seems to me that all of this should be handled automatically in the emulator and be invisible to the developer, but once you get through this part no problem.  Its worth this hassle to be able to use he WM5.0 emulator.  If this doesn't help, try this blog post from the Visual Studio for Devices blog.
