When we ran setup /PrepareSchema (or setup /ps), the setup did not complete successfully because we encountered several recipient policy error messages in the ExchangeSetup.log file.

[01/01/2010 14:29:39.0629] [1] [ERROR] The domain 'xxxxxxxx.com' is configured authoritative or non-authoritative inconsistently among multiple recipient policies.
[01/01/2010 14:29:39.0644] [1] [ERROR] The domain 'yyyyyyyy.com' is configured authoritative or non-authoritative inconsistently among multiple recipient policies.

The setup failed because the domains xxxxxxxx.com and yyyyyyyy.com are configured authoritative and non-authoritative among multiple recipient policies in the Exchange 2003 Organization.

To fix the problem, you will need to examine all of your recipient policies and make sure the domains xxxxxxxx.com and yyyyyyyy.com are consistently either authoritative or non-authoritative.  Please note the Exchange Pre-Deployment Analyzer and Exchange 2003 Best Practices Analyzer do not flag any email domain names as being inconsistent across recipient policies so you will have to check all of your recipient policies individually.
